TRADE: Tyus Jones to DAL | Branham to CHA
#1
Shams Charania (@ShamsCharania)
The Charlotte Hornets are trading Tyus Jones to the Dallas Mavericks for Malaki Branham, sources tell ESPN. Mavericks have had interest in Jones this season and get him today. Hornets open up a $7 million trade exception.

Tyus Jones, sources say, was who Dallas actually targeted above D'Angelo Russell this summer, before Jones found a richer deal with Orlando than the Mavericks could afford.

Mavs are re-routing Malaki Branham and getting back Tyus Jones, a source confirms. No picks involved in the deal. Mavs get a point guard after sending out D'Angelo Russell in the A.D. deal yesterday.

I've got a really bad feeling...might be super alarmist of me.

I think this is Kidd, and I think it's to help win games. I hope I'm wrong, and even if I'm right it might not help with wins, but...it seems clear this is a move towards improved PG play right now. To be fair, that could be a good thing for Flagg's development, as long as it doesn't result in more wins than necessary.

If nothing else, Nembhard will get less minutes which I think is a mistake.

Jones was my choice in that draft. I really liked him.  He either went right in front of us or after.   He had a few years where he was one of the more underrated backup guards.  He was good.  Unfortunately in PHX and Orlando both fanbases could not wait to get rid of him.   He was bad in both spots and both spots needed good guard play.  I don't get this one.

Tyus Jones in the 3 season before this one

10.8 points
5.9 assists
1.0 steals
1.0 turnovers
45.8% FG
40% 3P

Interesting buy-low backup PG but on an expiring contract

This makes a lot of sense if Jones was a winning player.

Even with improved PG play, he's such a net negative on defense that it doesn't really matter. I solely see this as a benefit for Flagg getting to play in a better ran offense.

If the Mavs were smart, they'd shut Gafford down with "ankle specialist meetings" the rest of the year and just play:

Jones
Christie
Martin
Flagg
Bagley

And let the poor defense high octane offense do its thing.

If it's Kidd, I think this is about finally getting a seasoned PG in with a bunch of rookies. BWill isn't a rookie, but you get my drift.

I'm not sure Tyus is going to win a game, but Nembhard, Flagg, and BWill need to see how a veteran (not Dlo) should play that position. One of the biggest problems with Dlo is that he had some bad habits for a PG.

I think we'll have a better idea when we know who/whether they waive or buy out anyone.  The additions of Bagley and Jones lessen the need to give standard contracts to Nembhard and Cisse.

Mavs still have about 5.5M in cap room to sell, and I would think they haven't filed the AD trade yet (so can combine that in a swap). I hope they are looking for picks.

I was thinking the same thing .... or, having an alternative gives them a better angle to only offer the 2-ways the deal they want them to take.

The deadline ended 23 minutes ago.

The thinking behind Jones might be that they´ll likely get a guard with their pick (Wagler/Brown/Philon/Mullins/Flemings) and let Jones go.

If they don´t = move into top 4, they just have a close look, whether Jones is worth keeping as a back-up PG next year.

Just being real. Nembhardt and Cisse may not be NBA players but we know Jones and Bagley are legit NBA rotation players. Maybe one of our 2-ways is a miracle find, but the odds are long for one, much less both.

So Charlotte takes on Jones and gets two future seconds from Orlando and then trades Jones to Dallas for Branham?

Probably won't lead to anything, but nice little movement by Charlotte.  Magic fans are pissed they gave up two seconds and Charlotte didn't have to take any.   I guess Orlando had to get out of the tax though.

I saw somewhere that Charlotte plan was to waive Jones. I guess it was Mavs that really liked him, it meant nothing to Charlotte

Swapping Branham - a player Dallas would've waived - for Tyus Jones is a homerun A+ trade and adds to the haul for AD, which, given the circumstances, looks incredibly good.

Jones is an elite decision maker and floor general, exactly like Nimby, except Jones has done it in the NBA. It's no coincidence some of Flagg's best minutes have come alongside Nimbhardt. Jones will make Flagg's life MUCH better.

Jones is also one of the best ball security guards in the NBA, period. This team has been plagued by turnovers and that will change dramatically. I expect him to start until Kyrie returns and he could be a long-term keeper as one of the best backup PGs in the league.

I think Mavs2021 had the right of this in another thread. Essentially, I think this is about two things:

1) finally giving the team some semblance of consistent PG play down the stretch. I hope this is more about watching Flagg operate in a true pick and roll offense (that's Jones' strength, as well as Gafford's) and less about trying to win games.

2) getting a look at Jones in case he needs to be retained over the summer as the team's backup PG next season. This was Mavs2021's thought, and I think it's a good one.

I think Mavs will not be tanking hard. They are too far "behind" the worst teams and on the other hand too far from play-in. Probably also not good enough to connect some serious win series that would significantly improve their standing anyway. I think they can afford to just play best they can to build a culture.
