Maybe but stein just posted that the Mavs and Hawks are talking about a Gafford deal. It’s well know the Mavs want a FRP and now don’t have a need for salary relief. What incentive do the Mavs have to make a trade for a SRP?

Mavs may want FRP as much as they want, it doesn't mean that Atlanta is willing to give it. They are a weak play-in team as it is. Gafford doesn't make them that much better that it would make sense to trade FRP for him (unless it is something heavily protected and bad).
In any case, Atlanta took Landale from Utah for cash and I think that ends their center discussions for this season

Porzingis expiring contract is still an asset they could use to improve their team for next year.

Then there won’t be a trade? Also, I don’t think the Landale addition makes them less likely to pursue Gafford. He’s a spare.

Atlanta will have around 40 mil of capspace in the summer. They can very easily let KP walk and play with that flexibility.

How wrong and way off base have all the rumors & reports from “insiders” been this deadline?! Wow. I don’t know who to trust as a reliable source of information anymore. Where’s Woj??

I think everyone got bits and pieces from everyone else, but I think most of these deals have come together fast and in response from the other out of nowhere deals.
But most insiders reported the correct active teams. CLE, UTA, MEM, DAL, ATL all were rumored to make deals. And they all did.

Who said there will be a trade? Stein just said they are talking. Mavs obviously value Gafford higher than what Atlanta was willing to offer.

Also Mavs could have gotten Sexton for nothing in summer, who the Hornets (with three 2nd rounders) now turned into White.
That at least should lock the Mavs into 9th place now, but I never considered the Hornets a huge threat anyway. I called Bucks and Grizzlies about two weeks ago. I just didn´t expect that dumb Mavs winnig streak that melted away the cushion.

I dont think Atlanta would give up a 1st for Gafford either unless it was structured in a way to make it more attractive for them.

We all know Atlanta has NOP pick, but I don't see them wanting to give SAS a lottery pick, because it would probably end up top-4 cuz it's the Spurs. They still need more bigs.

White isn't such a positive asset as an UFA. I've beat this drum too many times and it's probably nauseating to keep reading but White is looking for a payday. CHA better be comfortable paying him or else they risk losing him.
I'm not shocked they got White, who is a good player, for essentially an expiring and 3 mediocre 2nds. Low investment/risk. The real prize is if they can get White on a 18-22 mil deal a year vs. the reported 30+ mil he was seeking in the summer.

KP + ‘27 FRP
Gafford+Martin
Mavs add $6.7M but stay under the tax. Clear a roster spot and get off Martin’s deal, while getting a pick in ‘27, which they currently don’t have? Can look at bringing back KP in the summer on a 1 year type deal?
Apart from his health concerns, KP may be a nice addition to a Flagg-centric team. Good outside shot with his size really stretches a defense and would allow Coop and Kyrie (and BWill?) to feast in the paint. Keep the lob threat and rim protection of Lively (next season) and you have a good 2-way core to work with, especially if Max can get a little more consistent with his outside shot.
And I think his time with BOS and ATL may have gotten him to accept a role player position instead of a perennial All Star candidate.
At worst, he's another expiring for financial freedom.

Yeah I thought the Cavs had actually moved up much further in the standings with their hot form. They are now within reach of the 28th pick, but as it stands they are still 19th and that is too much to give up for Gafford.
Nevertheless we need to focus on the Poeltl angle. The size of that trade exception and the Mavs inside track on Poeltl via AD negotiations is the most interesting subplot now. If they can get the Raptors 2026 1st, a future protected 1st and get rid of Martin, I´d give them an A+ for the AD trade.

They now have Okongwu, Landale and KP (whenever he is healthy every 10 games or so). I will be really surprised if they do anything else on the center front this season. They are well positioned for the summer. They don't gain anything by giving up a worse pick to Spurs. Of course they will not tank, but they will also not throw away picks just so that Spurs get a bit worse pick.

I agree, but I think they will. TDL is the new free agency, cause nobody has capspace in the summer anymore, which means players like White don´t have any leverage.

Jake Fischer said the Mavs are still looking to move Daniel Gafford “if and only if” they can get first-round draft capital
He doesn’t expect any other deals from Dallas “for now”
