Trade & FA 2025-26: Free Agency Starts 5pm CST/6pm EST

Interesting. So Brooklyn essentially was happy to eat 6 mil for half a season of Highsmith?

And how does that factor into their own FA's like Cam Thomas?

Like I get the objective is to be bad but even still their moves collectively this offseason has made no sense.

Don’t forget the second round pick.

Teams with the most games on NBC.
Why do the Mavs have the most?
Oh, I know why, CF

"Highsmith was offered to Phoenix for KD and other players, but Phoenix backed off the deal." -- I don't think Highsmith was of any particular value in that offer -- just some of the salary-matching filler (where a lot was needed).

"So Brooklyn essentially was happy to eat 6 mil for half a season of Highsmith? And how does that factor into their own FA's like Cam Thomas?" -- I don't think Cam Thomas is a big worry to them. He'll either take their longer offer of about 20M per (which they feel will make him a useful asset), or their qualifying offer, and it appears they are willing to live with either choice he makes.

For those keeping score, BKN still has tons of remaining cap room after the Highsmith deal, no matter which path Thomas selects, and can still easily take ANY of Hardy, Powell, or OMax into cap space (or into their room MLE) if there's a deal the teams want to do eventually. The Nets are already set to be above the minimum salary threshold, so it will cost ether a pick or compensatory cash (with presumably something extra) to take on trash player salary, unless the player has value to them. For HH, MIA gave a pick and BKN will pay the salary. It's possible (but not certain) they may see some on-court value in him also, but he's no real prize.

Mavs alternative to a BKN deal (or a salary-moving deal with another team, perhaps) would be a stretch-waive of either DP or OP. That would add enough room to sign Exum. The deadline on doing a s-w is Aug 31. Also, the Mavs have the window for a PJW extension opening on Aug 29. So we may get a flurry of Mavs' transaction activity in a couple of weeks.

One other note about adding Exum - to get the needed space, we have talked about the Mavs perhaps thinking of waiving BW, and then signing him to a 2-way deal. But in looking closer, the fine print in the 2-way (and GL) rules prevents that - since he has a 200K guarantee on his current NG contract, that 200K he would receive on being waived would make him ineligible to sign a 2-way (or GL) deal WITH THE MAVS if they waive him. So if they want to have BW available to them at all, it has to be on the contract he currently has. [Idle thought: does Nico know that? In light of past cap blunders, I seriously wonder if he does, or if he is currently depending on a backdoor way out of the roster situation that doesn't exist.]

I would hope they keep BW on a regular contract.  It is a cheap contract and he showed some promise.  It also appears he has been in Dallas most of the offseason.  I have no idea if his play was real last year but this team is so short on guards.   Especially with a guy like Exum who is always hurt.

It is a tricky spot as landing spaces for unwanted guys are really limited.    There needs to be a plan right?    Or at least a few directions.    It is just a little weird we a deep into summer and nothing has happened yet.

He's an NBA minority, like Luka, but USA homegrown.
Luka has Magic style though, wow factor passing, box office gold. Healthy Kyrie is maybe the most entertaining Mav.
Will be interesting to see what how Coop's game compares in terms of being entertaining.   [Image: ?u=https%3A%2F%2Fimg.freepik.com%2Fpremi...3bb3c25a36]

Some people seem to think Austin Reeves will sign a deal for 30 mil per. That's insane to me.

Sorry, going to say it...  white guards are usually overrated.

Exactly, he‘s NBA minority, but at the same time US population majority - which is a rare combination. So the potential from a marketing and legacy standpoint is endless.

And people can also easily fall in love with the hardest working guy instead of the fanciest playing one, so let’s see how big he will get off the floor.

This true.  Flagg's game includes a level of defense which Luka magic does not include.

Defense isn't as marketable perhaps as magic, but a lot of basketball fans may really enjoy it.

[Charania] Breaking: Malik Beasley is no longer a target of the federal gambling investigation conducted by the Eastern District of New York, his attorneys Steve Haney and Mike Schachter told ESPN. This potentially reopens free agency for one of the NBA's top shooters.

Sucks for him. Whether he was totally innocent is another story, but still he missed out on FA.   Is there any team that can/will offer him more than the minimum.  What are some good options for him?

I don't know if it's possible, but he really wants to go back to Detroit.  Is there any scenario they could re-sign him? That investigation really screwed him up, big time.

Being the hardest working guy is cool, until it becomes a replacement for "skills are not there, but at least he tries".

We get it now. Stop pushing this mantra.

They can offer him 7.2 mil
