Smitty posted a good list of all the free agents out there, and there's obviously more business that will happen, but whether it's Kuminga or something else, something has ground everything to a halt, and it gets exhausting waiting for things to happen. In a way, I love the NBA off-season more than anything, but the end of July and August are just the worst. ![]() • From Dirk to SCREW YOU Nico, Scott41theMavs, SleepingHero
One thing that might be a holdup is the Cam Thomas deal with the Nets. Brooklyn is one of the only teams that could absorb some kind of cash deal\trade with the Mavericks right now. But until Cam Thomas accepts the Nets offer, the constipation will continue.
"Expanding on his earlier reporting on restricted free agent guard Cam Thomas, Brian Lewis of The New York Post (subscriber link) says he has heard from three sources that there may not be resolution on the situation anytime soon. The Nets are the only NBA team with cap room remaining and continue to explore options for how to use that space. Until that happens, they’ll likely be in no rush to lock up Thomas to a new deal, and his camp isn’t pressing the issue either. On top of that, there may be a substantial gap between how the two sides value Thomas. As Lewis writes, a source familiar with the guard’s thinking believes he could be seeking $30MM per year, since he doesn’t consider himself to be a lesser player than Immanuel Quickley (who is earning $32.5MM per year going forward), Tyler Herro ($32MM per year), or RJ Barrett ($28.7MM per year). However, the Nets likely won’t consider a deal anywhere near that lucrative, especially with no rival suitors in position to offer Thomas a significant offer sheet. Two league sources who spoke to Lewis wondered if the 23-year-old might ultimately accept his $6MM qualifying offer in order to reach unrestricted free agency in 2026, though that would likely be a last resort."

I think it is the other way around, as it is written in the article you posted. BKN are not in hurry to resign Cam Thomas, as they are exploring opportunities to sell their cap space. It is in their interest to operate as over the cap team and sell as much cap space as possible, before resigning Cam Thomas. So I think he is not really blocking any FA movement.

Yep. I think BKN is the biggest puzzle everyone is waiting on, because they ALSO have cap room they have to use somehow. But every impasse (the 4 RFA's stuck in BKN, CHI, GS, and PHI) has a ripple effect, with teams on the side waiting to see what that might shake loose. BKN is probably not quite as stuck as it looks, because they have tons of cap space no matter what happens with CT. They know what they are willing to pay CT, so they already know what will be left over. The only surprise they could encounter would be if CT decides to take the QO, in which case their leftover amount doesn't go away, but instead gets even bigger. Of course, none of that may have any relation to the Mavs at all, for two reasons. One, we can't be sure they are stuck at all. It's possible they are intending all along to move B Will to a 2-way, and merely waiting until camp starts. Or two, it's possible the Mavs already have a deal negotiated with someone else, but that team has other moves they must do first before taking a salary. The Mavs only need about 3M of workable space if selling OMax is their plan, and all that takes is a team with a sliver of leftover MLE money or a small TPE.

Cap space calculation doesn't change for them, no matter how much they agree to with him in the end. They have north of 25 mil of cap space even with Cams cap hold. Calculation might change for them, if they are not able to sell their cap space, as they have to spend it before the season starts (not sure about exact date). If they are not able to sell the space, they might offer a different deal to Thomas, imho (perhaps more short term money). There are now only four teams with full MLE left - Chicago, GSW, Hornets and Washington. Chicago and GSW will most likely lose theirs once they complete Giddey and Kuminga negotiations. I wonder, which teams (if any) are looking to shed salary.

Yes, if BKN wants to spend the money, they certainly have opportunity to sell all their space and more, to go over the cap. However, we're not sure where BKN is even headed. Are they only going to spend the minimum, and save some money? If so, how far under the minimum will they be? Or are they going to "bank" some cap room for use at the TDL when a team is more desperate to slip under or stay under some cap-related spending limit? Or are they considering the OKC model, where they prioritize veteran player(s) who they take for a pick, and then hope to later sell for a pick when someone needs him? In some of those, do they maybe need to resolve the CT situation (which WILL get resolved by Oct 1) before selling what cap room they have left? It would be a bit humorous if BKN just waited, and left much of the league stuck on whether to move on or to keep waiting too.

I think all of this depends on how much they can get for their cap space. As it is, I am not sure there are many teams looking to dump salaries at the moment. Price for cap space might not be high. I think BKN is more about waiting for how much they can get for their cap space and how much they can even sell it, than they will adjust strategy towards Cam Thomas. As it looks like, there are not many teams being enthusiastic to pay a lot for cap space, it might be this is what is holding up some activities. There were a lot of rumors ever since draft about BKN offering cap space as a third team trade facilitator, taking back unwanted salaries, but only one such trade materialised. We could have a bunch of teams interested in cap space, but none of them seems to be willing to pay much. Who will blink first?

I overlooked BKN still has two pending transactions (Sharpe and Williams), so their cap space, if they keep Thomas cap hold, is just some 15 mil

Why is the Mavs training camp going to be in Canada?
"The Mavericks will congregate in Canada this fall, according to Stein, who says the team’s training camp will be held in Vancouver, B.C."

"Like many teams, Dallas likes the idea of taking the team out of town for some two-a-days and bonding before the preseason schedule begins. The Mavericks have an early reunion with Dončić when they play the Lakers in an exhibition game at T-Mobile Arena in Vegas on Oct. 15."
They held their opening few camp days in Las Vegas last year. I can see why Las Vegas might not be the best location.

I have only been to Vancouver once. A few years ago. I thought the city was awesome. I know they didn’t really work with an nba team in the past and is a far way away. I would be totally of them getting another shot.

The NBA would set up shop again in Seattle before Vancouver I believe. Even though only 145 miles separates them. |
