MAVS NEWS:

So far, Kidd seems to not be repeating some of his earlier gaffes.

Be involving in Luka trade is a part of "learn from his mistakes"?

or was being surprised by the trade the main reason he would want out?

All signs are pointing toward Jason Kidd remaining the head coach of the Mavericks.

According to Christian Clark and Sam Amick of The Athletic, the Mavericks continue to privately insist to what they described as “key stakeholders” that Kidd won’t be going anywhere. Speculation has run rampant since it was reported on Monday by ESPN’s Brian Windhorst that there was “mutual intrigue” between Kidd and the Knicks, who recently fired Tom Thibodeau.

Citing a team source, The Athletic duo reports the Knicks had yet to request permission to speak with Kidd as of Tuesday afternoon. Similarly, Mike Curtis of the Dallas Morning News heard the same thing from a “person with knowledge of the situation.”

Curtis added that two people within the Mavericks organization told him they’re skeptical the Knicks will even make the request. Curtis notes that the Knicks would need to compensate the Mavs in order to hire Kidd, who signed a contract extension last offseason. That would likely require draft capital that the Knicks — who traded numerous picks to acquire Mikal Bridges — lack, as well as possible cash considerations.

If the Knicks do ask permission to talk to Kidd, it’s expected the Mavericks will decline, according to Stefan Bondy of the New York Post.

The Athletic indicates that there’s a widely held belief is that Kidd is hoping to parlay the Knicks’ interest into another lucrative contract extension. If that extension isn’t offered, it’s possible that the Kidd might want to head to New York.

However, Jay Triano agreed to terms on an assistant coaching job with the Mavericks on Tuesday after assurances from Mavericks GM Nico Harrison that Kidd would remain the head coach. The Stein Line reported over the weekend that the Mavs and Triano, the former head coach of the Suns and Raptors, were finalizing an agreement. Triano spent the last three seasons as a Kings assistant.

 Does he really want out?

fun to speculate
but probably he was actually in on it and is just trying to secure a couple more years of guaranteed money from the Mavs

Kidd hiring a second new assistant. I believe we had one opening on the bench. There was reports Dudley and Sweeney both also had asst coach interviews. I wonder if they will be back?

The Mavs can literally just say that Kidd will remain as Coach because he's under contract and they can deny other teams the opportunity to talk with him. It's 100% in their control.

NY media is being silly because they know that, and what they really mean is that the Knicks believe that Kidd will remain with the Mavs but they can't actually say that because there's been no formal request to talk to Kidd so technically no reason why he wouldn't stay (and to suggest otherwise would be tampering, or at least I would think)

The story that never ends... How many times can a "reporter" post something about the Kidd saga and say nothing at all?

Personally, I would hate to lose Kidd. I wanted him fired 18 months ago, but he's really grown on me and his time as a Mav has been pretty damn good, all things considered. I'd like for him to get a healthy extension because I think it's deserved, and I don't want to talk all offseason about how he's tied to the fate of Nico.

Here's a good 40 minute video on the Mavs from the guys at "Game Theory"

Included:
Kyrie's contract
Roster building
The Flagg timeline
Who to trade, who to keep
How about an Atlanta sign-and-trade (Gafford for Chris Lavert and two 2nd round picks)
In any Dallas trade scenario, they don't like trading both PJ and Gaff. Just one or the other.

They like Chris Paul on top of that (but I think most of us here are resigned to him being in LA). Dinwiddie might be acceptable.

Thanks for this.  I'll listen for myself, but I'm curious how they intended to do a S&T for UFA LeVert?

This is a pretty lengthy conversation, and it's mostly discussed "on the fly" with some other ideas. They were spitballing.

The New York Knicks requested permission Wednesday morning to speak to Mavericks coach Jason Kidd – and Dallas gave a firm rejection, sources tell ESPN.

Marc Stein says it's not the Mavs preference to trade
PJ or Gafford, but he doesn't think it's practical.

We already know who are the guys to trade or not resign...

I listened just now.  They have an issue with their spreadsheet.  Not sure what it is, but something is off as they were talking about Dallas having the Full MLE and being able to bring in S&T's.

Otherwise, good conversation thought they talked about how good Dallas could be and how valuable Gafford and PJ are and then mainly tried to trade them for uninspiring things.

There is definitely some of that "uninspiring" material. What I liked - which I think was on point - was that Gafford and PJ are easily fit into multiple scenarios. These are solid players who likely are going to be wanted players by a lot of teams. While we on this board may be able to imagine a few things, there are likely many more trade possibilities we can't imagine.

It's not often the Mavs has the type of players that make our phones ring at this time of year. I think this year, the FO will have some options.

I wonder if we ever find out who was a part of the free agent workout yesterday. We heard a few names previously, but would be curious who they brought in.

I also wonder what the team really thinks about Brandon Williams. He was productive when he played last year. He is small and I think defense is pretty bad. He did provide a jolt when he was in games. I wonder if they view him as a true candidate to get real minutes next year or a nice story who will probably stick around as an end of the bench emergency player. Would love to get their real thoughts.

Also, Omax is still in his cast so summer league is probably out for him. That is disappointing.
