MAVS NEWS:

REPORT: The New York Knicks are expected to “formally request permission to speak” to Jason Kidd, per
@TheSteinLine

Stein adds that it’s unclear how Dallas would respond to this request.

- Kidd is “believed to be happy in Dallas…”

- The Spurs have interest in hiring Sean Sweeney as an asst coach.

- The Grizzlies recently interviewed Jared Dudley for an asst coaching job.

- Jay Triano is a top candidate for a Mavs asst job.

Just weird. Mavs seem to let loose ends slip all the time. If Kidd doesn't want to be here, fine. Although he is under contract and the Mavs need a pick back. If Kidd leaves, no reason to keep Nico around. To have it be question of how the Mavs will respond is just odd. Also, interesting that all the assistant coaches are interviewing or may have interest in other assistant jobs.

Maybe it is nothing but we have seen this front office does not take care of things in advance. To have Kidd go on interviews and talk about the "kid from Duke" and then leave a week later is just another nightmare PR blunder imo.

**Also, this isn't a Nico decision either. Time for Dumont to put his big boy clothes on. If Kidd wants to leave, NY needs to offer a bone. None of this Nico taking care of his buddy and letting him leave because he wants a change.

My hope is that all of this adds up to Dumont wanting to clean house (Nico, Kidd, etc) and gave them a heads up to find other opportunities vs outright firing them.

Marc Steins words on the matter

“Kidd, though, is believed to be happy in Dallas despite the extreme tumult of the past season, which saw the Mavericks stun the entire league and deeply wound huge segments of their fan base by trading Dončić to the Lakers without warning on Feb. 2. He has spoken often in recent weeks about his excitement for the opportunity to coach Duke phenom Cooper Flagg, who is poised to be selected No. 1 overall by the Mavericks in this month's NBA Draft.”

Take him.  Please.  We'll take a top 59 protected second round pick in return.

Horrible precedent and screams beta energy.

If NYK is that desperate for Kidd and Kidd alone, the Mavs should be setting the price outrageously high. Knicks don’t like it? too bad, go find another coach.

They obviously value Kidd. So much so that they are willing to try and violate his contract to get him. At that point, the Mavs should ask for 2 unprotected FRPs. Maybe even 3.

Kidd to the Knicks and fire Harrison are the 2most important things of this off season... After then trade street clothes.

Sweet dream

The obvious trade for Kidd would be in exchange for the Wizards 2026 pick that NY owns. The downside is that it almost certainly will turn into 2 2nd rounders because of the conditions on the pick. But...

Washington also owns the Memphis pick this year at #18. I wonder if they'd be willing to trade that to the Knicks in exchange for full rights to their 2026 pick back (plus some other tip from NY). Then the Knicks could send the #18 pick this year to Dallas.

Rivers was traded to the Clips for an unprotected first, but in that case it was Rivers that asked for the trade because he didn't want to be part of the Celtics rebuild.

That was a while ago, but in this case it's the other team wanting to make the trade so seems like the price should be higher.

One thing I find incredibly interesting is that the Mavs have all the power right now to quash this Kidd-NYK thing and they haven't done so.

It's telling.

I think they are pretty happy with him. But coaches are replaceable in the NBA.

So, even if they have very high regard for him, if NY offered, say, Jalen Brunson for Klay, Martin, and Kidd...

...you'd at least have to listen, wouldn't you?

Since it's been a few hours, I guess you have to wonder if the Mavs are in negotiations. There's a lot to discuss among the FO - Kyrie's future, ADs future, draft picks, etc.

Frankly, I dont think there is any linkage between the 2. That includes the Luka trade, where Nico made the claim that he knew Kidd would agree, even though he had NOT talked to Kidd about it. Just arrogantly assumed. And Kidd has played good soldier, refusing to take shots at Nico, but also not ever saying it was a good move or a necessary one (and kinda speaking of his job as being to coach what he's given rather than manage those choices.)

If Nico is fired I think Kidd would be relieved not sad.

I think Kidd is a plus as a coach and it would be a mistake to let him go. He's taken Mavs to WCF twice. In their 45 year history, no other coach has done that. I think he's a great asset in trying to build the PG group. Players (except scrubs who won't play team ball and end up with reduced minutes) like to play for him, and that matters in roster building.

I dont think NY has anything to offer except junk, so there's no potential value if Mavs opened the door.

Two ships passing in the night: For years the Mavs were hamstrung by NY having their picks. Now, the Knicks want something from the Mavs but don't have any real picks to offer.

If Kidd really does want to go, I want a 1st in this draft in the 15-22 range, especially if he's the "PG" equivalent to wooing Giannis like Kawhi. Let the Knicks figure it out.

Jay Triano is nearing a deal to nearing a deal to work under Jason Kidd as the next assistant coach in Dallas, according to @JakeLFischer.

Triano was the Sacramento Kings associate head coach last season.

I don't think anything weird is going on. Mavs lost quite a bit of guys on the bench in the wake of the Luka trade.

The Kidd/Knick thing is a non-story. The fact the Mavs are adding to Kidd's bench means they aren't entertaining the Knicks trying to poach Kidd away and is most likely quietly telling them to go pound sand.

I will not miss Kidd when he is gone, but he does serve a useful role in recruiting.

This organization is toxic, we need to clean the house from Harrison&Dumont.

If lose Kidd is the first step then it's ok for me, we are the clown of the league after last year.
No Flagg can fix it. Clean the house ASAP.
