Looking at the stats for each draft position, you’d have to put Gafford as a top-10 pick. And he’s already developed, so there’s no risk involved.
It’s easy to want to trade my dull old quarter for that bright, shiny nickel.
Written in 2009. Wonder if adding the last 16 years of data would make any differences?
It does give some background to why Brunson, picked at #34, was given an easily shed contract after the draft. That came back to bite them in the a$$, but you can see the logic at the time.

So, what is Gafford worth, salary-wise?
Stat-wise, he's been about a 12-point, 7-rebound guy in 21 min/gm.
Capela is 5 years older, scores less but rebounds more. Currently on a $22m/yr contract, but overpaid
Zubac makes $20m/yr, but plays more, scores and rebounds more.
Nick Richards $5m/yr. Similar stats.
Al Horford $9.5m/yr. Similar stats.
Wendell Carter Jr $19m/yr. Similar stats.
Nurkic $17m. Similar stats.
Can you see him taking a $12-14m/yr. deal?

I think he's worth more than that for sure. Is he worth that to the Mavs? With Luka, I think so. Now that this team is unlikely to be a high rate PnR team, I doubt it. Factor in the eventual Lively and Davis money on the books and you start to see why so many are putting Gafford in their fantasy trades for upgrades in the backcourt.

I think he's worth more, but i think that's where he lands, with the upper limit the MLE but probably somewhat below that.
I think the MLE will become a standard price level or barrier for contracts, because so few teams will be able to offer more with the way spending is working. Smart teams then aim to build rosters with players worth more than that, but salary slotted at or below that number. An added benefit is the ability to have teams with big MLE now able to use that rather than salary match, if you ever want to trade them.
I see Gaff extending at something like 3/ 40 or so.

I hope the Mavs act from a position of strength this offseason. If a deal that you think clearly makes you better, act on it. PJ and Gafford are both good players. Doing nothing is better than moving one in a trade that doesn't clearly make you better. Engage on extensions for both. Extending both at the right number is not the worst move. There is a chance either could be moved during the season as well. I think the first step though is Dallas has to secure a veteran point guard. If they do, they can sit back and wait and not be forced to find a deal.
I don't think there are minutes or everyone in the front court, when healthy. AD,Gafford, Lively and PJ best positions are PF or C. Time will tell with Cooper. That is a lot of bodies who are expecting heavy minutes. The mavs have no need to move anyone though if the right deal is not there.

We get a PG. Then the best deal is where we sit by the phone and wait for someone to call us....

But that's where he is today. Last season was ~$13.4M and next season is ~$14.4M. Why agree to extend at the same salary level?

Because (imo)
1 he'd much rather be here, per the whispers
2 so he locks in a deal NOW at numbers that make DAL happy to keep him rather than trade him (and it's easy to structure the deal where he can't be traded right after it)
... or, to put it another way, if he DOESN'T extend, he becomes instant trade fodder, right?
3 with the hard cap squeezing salaries to fit within limits, what he used to be paid has nothing to do with the next deal -- a player gets paid at what a team will be willing to pay, AND what they can pay
4 remember, Mavs didn't determine his prior pay, they have been stuck with paying it (in a good way or a bad way), but both parties know they won't be mentally obligated to base anything on that
5 sometimes player pay goes down
6 I think MLE (14.1M) is his upper limit if he tests free agency ...can't see his demand being enough to entice a cap room team to prioritize him
7 a signed deal now, in the same range as what you'd expect to get later, is a much better option, since all it takes is a major injury to gut value at contract time

Max and Brandon at the stars game. I really like Max. Not sure what his upside is and he still needs to improve but he is at least a real nice bench piece

December 2023 Dante Exum was a really fun player to watch. It's too bad his body can't handle a full NBA season. I think it's time for the Mavs to move on. Going to the Euroleague would make a lot of sense for him.

Dallas needs Exum right now.
Handles the ball well against pressure, doesn't make many mistakes, creates for others well, plays solid defense, and cheap.
I hope the Euro team doesn't come up with a bunch of money.

Guys like Gaff and PJ only have value to contending teams trying to finalize a championship roster or to teams looking for expiring contracts to reduce payroll. Otherwise, their presence on your roster just makes it more difficult to acquire the requisite two stars needed to contend. That’s why they were so cheap for the Mavs to acquire in the first place. It’s going to be a buyers market for those two with a small number of suitors. And the Mavs while bordering the second apron cannot keep either past this season unless they move off Davis, which they should, but won’t do. The Mavs will need to trade with whoever they can, including the Lakers, and take what they can get.

So, in today's NBA, a 26 year old verstatile wing that can play both ways is a net negative value? Maybe the CBA is so utterly broken that this is true, but I find it hard to believe there won't be a robust market for Washington, and Gafford for that matter. I guess we'll find out.

Good luck at think that, Fenerbace is the Euroleague Champions. An hell of a team.
They will pay him at least 2M (euros).
Mavs are a no where team and they can offer just a vet min.

PJ and Gafford are winning players, no need to dump them because they are also young.
Street clothes is the man to trade. Absolutely.
