I guess the Mavs have a pretty good idea, whether a two-way is needed to retain Gortman and Sharp. I assume both will just sign normal G-League contracts.

The Mavs already have Gortman, Sharp, and Miller on GL-intended contracts called Exhibit 10.

FAQ Explanation: If a standard NBA contract includes an attachment called Exhibit 10, the team receives the right to convert the contract to a Two-Way contract. Whether or not an eligible contract includes an Exhibit 10 is a matter of negotiation between the player and team. To be eligible to contain an Exhibit 10, a contract must be for one season at the minimum salary, with no bonuses of any kind (other than an optional Exhibit 10 bonus), and no compensation protection.

PLAYER MOTIVATION: By signing an Exhibit 10 (which in essence locks them into a GL deal with a certain team if they don't make the 15-man roster), the player will get an Exhibit 10 bonus (from $5,000 to $50,000 whose amount is a negotiated part of the contract) if he is waived by the NBA team, signs with the G-League, is assigned to the NBA team's G-League affiliate, and stays there at least 60 days. If a contract contains an Exhibit 10 bonus it must also contain a Conversion Protection Amount in the same amount (in other words, the Bonus amount is guaranteed,

Other rules related to Exhibit 10:
  • A team can have no more than six contracts that contain an Exhibit 10 in effect at any time.
  • A contract must be converted to a Two-Way contract prior to the start of the regular season (including during the July Moratorium).

One aspect that may be of interest to fans of these players: a standard NBA contract with an Exhibit 10 that is converted to a Two-Way contract can later be converted back to a standard NBA contract.

Exhibit 10 bonuses are not counted as Team Salary.

If a Two-Way contract is converted to a standard NBA contract, the regular trade restriction exists for the first three months or until December 15, whichever is later The three month period begins on the date the contract is converted.

In lieu of converting a Two-Way contract to a standard NBA contract, teams and players are also free to negotiate and sign a standard NBA contract. If a new NBA contract is signed, the Two-Way contract becomes null and void.

Is Luka in Croatia? His story on instagram sure seems like it, but it doesn’t make sense at this time of the year.

@GrantAfseth
Kyrie Irving hosted his teammates during the Mavericks' road trip. Asked Naji Marshall about it, who says it's been "an amazing team-bonding trip."

Naji on Dallas: "Everybody’s bonded really well. From the coaches to the medical team, to you guys—it feels like everybody’s at home."

Asked Jason Kidd about how Luka Dončić has progressed: "He's doing great. He had a great workout today. We're off and traveling tomorrow, so hopefully, he has another good workout on Wednesday. From everything I've seen and everything I've been told, he's doing great."

Am I the only one, after the first three pre-season games, who is worried about the depth?

- Dinwiddie looks borderline unplayable.
- Morris and Powell are on roster for towel-waving. (I know Powell will get minutes, but at this point in his career, should he?)
- Exum is out for several months.
- Maxi is his could-be-available-but-often-not self.

That leaves
Luka
Kyrie
Lively
Klay
PJ
Marshall
Grimes
Gafford
Hardy
OMax

...and we all know how questionable those last two are for providing quality minutes.

(Note: I'm not as worried as some about "back-up PG" - Luka or Kyrie should always be on the floor, and either one is elite at the PG position - but if one of those goes down for a time, and they always do, we're cooked)

(Note 2: the upside to this point is that I drool thinking of how good our front 8 are - definitely top five in the league. But how often in the first three months will all 8 of them be available?)

Throw Klay's mentioned needs-two-months-to-sort-out-his-shot percentages, and the first two months of the season could be pretty bumpy. Not saying Nico didn't have a great offseason, just not as optimistic as I was prior to pre-season (and the Exum injury).

Watching Klay and Naji right now concerns me deeply. Watching Grimes and Gortman gives me a bit of hope. But what really keeps me optimistic is knowing Kidd treats the preseason as a joke and the first half of the season as training camp. We won’t know what we’ve got till the All-Star break.
Pessimism doesn’t make you smart, just pessimistic.

I buy the preseason assessment, but I´m not sure about the first half of the season. Aside from load management, which the majority of (older) teams do nowadays, I don´t think we would have improved that much without the great trades last season.

Plus the West is ridiculous and our opening schedule is difficult.

First 17 games

Utah twice, who are a lot better than they let on. Last season they started 26-26 before going into a deep 5-25 tank. So bad spot in the schedule. In November you have a fight on your hands. In April you get two freebies.

Spurs twice, where let´s be honest nobody knows what to expect from Wembanyama/Pop. Probably a similar story to Utah, unless Wembanyama is so good
that they abort the 2nd half tank completely later.

The other 13 games the 39-43 Bulls are the only team under 0.500 from last season.

We have to be ready to play.

I am worried too, for these same reasons. It's why I made this post the other day, suggesting it would be in the Mavs best interests to cut Morris and Lawson (I would also cut others like Dwight and Spencer if it could be done without their salaries counting against the cap)... then retain Gortman and Miller for depth, and promote O-Max to the 1st team.

Anyway, this is the team I would take into the regular season.

PG: Kyrie, Spencer, Exum
SG: Klay, Grimes, Hardy
SF: Luka, Naji, Miller
PF: PJW, Kleber, O-Max
C: Lively, Gafford, Dwight

Two-ways: Edwards, Gortman, and either Williams or Sharp.

That being said, another worry is over-playing Luka, Kyrie and PJW in the regular season. Their minutes should be tightly managed (no more than 32-34 minutes per game), so they're fresh for the playoffs.

Scott for the Mavs, we have long relied on you to provide some worrys. Something difficult will happen but we could just rely on knowing we do have a great top 8-9 this year and that we can adapt as we did last year. Luka or Kyrie by themselves can keep us afloat. I also like some of our young depth we could go to for minutes in a pinch.

SD and Hardy suck as PGs.

Mavs need Gortman as the 3rd PG (Since Exum is out still)

I like Gortman, but he´s as much a PG as Dinwiddie and Hardy. Same goes for Exum.

The list is meaningless but I think you could say one of the keys to the season is for Lively to move up some and PJ to get on the list. Mavs have good depth. If you have two stars and two additional top 100 players the rest of the depth works well.

That list tends to discount defense.  I would rather have Lively than at least 20 guys that are ahead of him on that list.

Lively is not even in Bill Simmons top 75 trade value list, which is a joke.
