You go from DJJ, Green, PJ, Lively, Gafford, Exum, and Maxi as our top seven next to Luka and Kyrie, to Splash Grandpa, PJ, Lively, Dinwiddie, Gafford, Marshall, and Grimes or Exum. That's a lot more defensive holes.
I have no idea why we are assuming a vet min is getting 8 man rotation minutes, but even if that were true, its not in the ballpark of trading away two starters for a player that doesn't make any sense at all. Exum and Hardy were 10th and 11th on the team in minutes. Thats where his minutes would be coming from (assuming he is getting rotational minutes at all when team is healthy) and Hardy is probably a worse defender. I can see the concern regarding Hardy development, but team defense will mostly be defined by the top 9 guys already on the roster.

If that's all it is, no argument. That guy would be insurance (Dinwiddie), OR insurance with some potential developmental upside (DSJ or THT). No issues.
I just don't think that's all it is.
For one thing, I feel almost 100% sure that Morris will be the last guy on the roster. I guess we don't know that FGump's "cushion" is even a thing, let alone his $1 million target for it, but I agree with the logic of it, so I'm low-key frightened that doing something like this might require more than just releasing the non-guaranteed year of Lawson. And, even if that is all they do (this guy replaces Lawson, Morris slides into the 15th slot), I really, really want to see Hardy in the rotation. I know that's not a popular opinion, but it's what makes sense to me.
Stein's words "desperately searching" and even just that this seems to be a real consideration have me low-key worried that they're going too far into "win-now" mode. Green is gone now in favor of a 34 year old (I'm ok with that, in a vacuum), and now it really seems like they're trying to give themselves a way not to play Hardy.

The quote (at least in today's story) was "moving deliberately".

Ah, my mistake. Possibly a totally different connotation, I admit.
Still don't like it. More Hardy, no geezers.
I'd probably be more on board if the two non-Dinwiddie youngsters were players I had any interest in, whatsoever, but it's gonna be Dinwiddie, I can feel it.

Lawsons guarantee is on 1st of October, so I think he is dropped to resign Morris. I guess Mavs do have space for two vet min spots.
Dinwiddie as an insurance when Luka or Kai are out is good. Anything more I don't like and I doubt it will happen. But, it might also be a signal Mavs are not believers in Exum or even Hardy

I don't really see the downside of adding a known quantity in Dinwiddie, even if it MAY take chances away from Hardy.
In case any one of Luka/Kyrie/Exum has to miss games, Dinwiddie can step into that role pretty easily. He knows the system already and for whatever reason, he plays his best basketball in a Maverick uniform.
If Dinwiddie at this stage in his career is outplaying Hardy for minutes and gets his spot on the court, I think that's more a consequence on Hardy and the fact he can't/hasn't taken that next step than it is on Kidd/Dinwiddie leaning too much on vets.

Free agent guard Spencer Dinwiddie has agreed on a one-year deal with the Dallas Mavericks, sources tell @TheAthletic @Stadium. Dinwiddie reunites with Mavs as an ideal backcourt fit. He averaged 17.4 points in parts of two Dallas seasons and was key on 2022 West Finals team.

Well, we're about to learn how much the Mavs are worried about Gump's cushion, I suppose. All that's left to do now is to re-sign Morris. Lawson's probably way gone (no problem there).

You have 11 twice and Morris will likely replace Lawson as 15th guy. One has to go for Mavs to sign Morris

Or perhaps Mavs will keep Lawson as deep bench wing insurance and ship Exum or Hardy. They have a lot of guards

At this point, I think that makes a ton of sense. It's not what I expect, but it might be the right choice.

Current depth chart:
Luka/Exum/Dinwiddie
Kyrie/Grimes/Hardy
Klay/Marshall/Lawson
PJ/Maxi/OMax
Lively/Gafford/Powell
The biggest bottleneck is probably the Grimes/Hardy role. Grimes is big enough to float behind Klay so maybe thats where most of his minutes come while Marshall takes the backup 4 role.
I like our guard rotation now. A great mix of vets and young talent.

Do you guys mean his statement why he chose the Lakers? That was taken way out of context and wasn’t a diss at the Mavs at all.
If not, which comments do you mean?

It was misinterpreted, I think, relative to his meaning. But, the fault was his, not a lack of context, because his meaning was difficult to glean, due to the clumsiness and confusing nature of his analogy. It was a quote that probably wouldn't exist if he had thought about it more before speaking. There were far better ways, less open to interpretation ways, of expressing what I think he was trying to express.
