Trade & FA 2024-25:

Bobby Marks says Dallas has a strong position to get Klay Thompson

Or Green.  I could have been more clear, but I said "if you can't get anyone to take your exception".

They have options.  We all have opinions (and favorites), but only they know the pecking order of what they prioritize (no matter what they say in public).

I was one of the Klay deniers but I'm in for around 15 mil a year.
Was thinking it'd be more around 22 mil a year.
Let me just go record that I have absolutely no idea how Klay will be on the court. I don't know if we will see more pre-injury Klay or perhaps some of his poorer games from last year. I can't tell and for this reason, I will not be too emotionally up or too down about this sign-and-trade. My bullet points are as follows.

I don't find 20m a year all that troubling. It's not like its unmovable number. I like his championship pedigree, and I think his attitude is fine - he obviously takes pride in how he performs. This is not a guy I expect to slack-off.

I don't expect Nico to guarantee him as a starter. We told DJJ when we acquired him that he would have to earn his starting spot. I expect that to happen with Klay as well.

Heck LeBron is willing to knock 20 mil off his earnings just to acquire this player. What does that say?

I don't expect him to be like THj at all. In other words, if he's not hot that night, I still expect him to hustle and make good decisions.

I think he will be a good teammate. I suspect he will want play with Kyrie and Luka. He just seems like that type of guy.

I am crossing my fingers on his ability to play well, but I have no problems with rolling the dice on this guy. I still watch that crazy video where he scores a gazillion points in one quarter.

My guess is Klay gets slightly above the nontaxpayer midlevel ($12.9M) as a starting salary and gets multiple years.
Let´s hope he is correct. It makes all the difference in the world. I can ceratinly live with 45/3. That´s what guys like Allen or Kennard make.

It would also signals that he still wants to play to win, otherwise the 50/2 by Orlando are financially superior. I just have a very hard time that is what will happen.

If it does, I´ll give Nico a thumbs-up (assuming it then becomes Green or Kleber/Powell). At that number it also becomes a contract that is trade and S/W-buyoutable for tanking teams.

EDIT: Maybe it was also never just THJ + three 2nd round picks for Grimes. Maybe there is this hidden component, that they could not report yet. For example Green goes to Detroit, Klay goes to Dallas and X (Stewart?) goes to GS. Or Detroit just stay stupid.

I need grimes too.

People seem to be reveling in rubbing Klay's nose in his stats in the final play-in game. But for a more comprehensive example of his most recent play, check out his game log from March and April. https://www.espn.com/nba/player/gamelog/...y-thompson

Sign and trade djj maybe if getting Klay?

not legal on a couple different levels
If I am not mistaken, Mavs are not hardcapped at 1st apron yet. So scenarios with TP MLE could also still be in play. It depends on how deal with Detroit is constructed.

If Mavs take Grimes into TPE, does that hardcap them at 1st apron?

so many different rules
but I think using the MLE itself hardcaps you at the 1st apron
then we're already hard capped at the 2nd arpon because we used money in the pick trade

This is a perfect time to reference the CBA FAQ I have stickied!

And yes if the Mavs use a TPE, it hardcaps them at the 1st apron.

I am not speaking about using the MLE, I am speaking about TP MLE (this one doesn't hard cap you). The scenario here could be:
1. Use Detroit trade to SnT Klay
2. keep Green
3. Sign wing to TP MLE

Although I am not sure what we would do with so many 2/3 wings

Thanks. This means TP MLE scenario is not possible. Although, Grimes could be traded in TPE in a separate deal in June and THJ traded to Detroits cap space in July Smile

Another way of looking at this is post all-star his splits are 18.9 points, 2.9 boards and 2.4 assists in 28 minute.  +3.5 with a .605 TS%, .412 on 255 three attempts and .950 from the FT line.

I don't get the Klay Thompson interest at all. I mean, he shoots FTs at an elite level which we need, but do we even know the ballpark cost?

Sorry, but I hope the Lakers get him.
Mike Singer (@msinger)
I’ve mentioned Indiana before as a team to watch for KCP, & I heard it again yesterday. Would keep an eye on Pacers, among Sixers and Magic as teams that could lure him out of Denver. Have heard — & it makes sense — that he’d be looking for a longer deal at this point in career.

Just a disclaimer. I think Mavs have everything already lined up and I am just trying to guess what will happen, play through possible scenarios. I will be incredibly dissapointed if Mavs are caught with their pants down and Klay signs (for example) with LA after three days of "meetings with suitors" while DJJ and Naji sign their deals elsewhere in between. I trully hope those Mavs days are over.

And, we get some/all of our seconds back.  We are going to need to send something out to GSW.  If they truly want to facilitate something for their championship hero, it doesn't have to be much.  A nice sized TPE and a second probably does it..
