Perhaps. I'm looking up on Eric Pincus' website that lists every TPE available for every team and they are basically individual contracts they shipped out. But no team had done a deal structure like what the Mavs are attempting to do here.
So truthfully I have no clue.

LeBron James is willing to take a $20 million pay cut in order for the Lakers to secure the full mid-level exception, per @wojespn:
There’s a sense LeBron will take it year-to-year now on new contracts instead of a multi-year deal.
Klay Thompson and Jonas Valanciunas appear to be their most realistic targets with the MLE.

Yes. Putting Grimes into an old TPE is another thing that hard-caps you at the first apron. So, there are versions where you look at THJ as a $16.2mm TPE with Grimes going into an old TPE. There are versions where you think of THJ as a trade matching mechanism (could be in combination with other players), but you have to net out Grimes.
That is the path to bringing in a non S&T player for more money than we are talking about with Thompson and there are ways to do it without hard-capping yourself.

If you're Brooklyn and clearly rebuilding, do you trade Simmons for Lavine if you get a pick or two out of it?

It's crazy how much he has killed his value. I agree with the assessment, but he was sure good a few years ago. Definitely not worth 43 per year.

Its shocking to me too.
Like Lavine is still a great player. All-star level talent when healthy. Yet teams still don't want to be paid to take him.
Either his knee is truly done for, he's a locker room cancer, or something we haven't heard. It's shocking to me a team like Miami or Sacramento aren't just making the deal for the talent alone.

NBA free agency officially starts at 3 p.m. today. I imagine there will be deals reported almost immediately.
(Won't be hearing from me until later today. Gotta go get some birdies. Or hopefully at least one.)

Yes, I believe a Klay Thompson deal -- probably sign-and-trade -- elsewhere is likely to land quickly. My pal @TheSteinLine has been reporting for a while that the Mavericks are a strong candidate. I agree.

Scoring a lot of points does not make you a great player. You sounding like our boy mavs2012. Also see Bradley Beal.

True.
But it is an aspect of a great player. Lavine is a one-way player that isn't worth his contract and has injury issues. There are many teams that are still desperate for his ability to score though.
For example, I'm shocked the Warriors haven't tried to make a run for Lavine. Especially now.

I'm still not convinced that Klay will take anything less than 20mil. The one saving grace that asset wise, a 20 mil contract is incredibly useful for trades later to pair for a big difference maker.
Not a good trade chip if it still has multiple years left on it.

I don´t think it´s the 43M. That will just be the new normal for All-Star level talent. It´s that he has three years left, just averaged under 20 PPG last season (25 PPG over the previous five years), and still deals with a lot of mileage on his knees that nobody can fully project his future. This uncertainty about health and decline makes teams very hesitant to commit themselves. It can work out, see Kyrie, who had similar risks attached to his $125M extension.
But why do that right now, when you are potentially getting a glorified Luke Kennard or THJ. I honestly think it´s dumb of the Bulls to trade him now, UNLESS they know he´s done or think he´ll look even worse next season. Either way that´s again a red flag for other teams. Why they so desperately trying to trade him, when his value is at an all-time low? They must know something. Did he get a knee transplant from Lonzo Ball?

My guess is Klay gets slightly above the nontaxpayer midlevel ($12.9M) as a starting salary and gets multiple years.

Mavs don't need a TPE for Klay SnT. They can just expand the Detroit deal, even if that deal adds Green.

Which gets back to some version of splitting $26.5mm between Thompson and someone making more than the $5.2mm exception. There are ways to get to any number you want really as long as you make Thompson and Exception Player happy.
If you don't get anyone to take your exception, there is a version where you keep Josh Green (and Maxi), but you limit Thompson to about $14mm. Not predicting that. Just pointing it out.

In that last scenario, that means DJJ is gone since we've lost the MLE space, right?
