I'd argue he still does. Wouldn't Stein be close with Finley too?

I guarantee he does. He's been a Dallas-based reporter for maybe 30 years, lives in the Dallas area, and is a genuine journalist. He has cultivated MANY knowledgeable connections inside the Mavs over those years, so he can weigh and side-check what he's told by someone, and determine how to share it so that he doesn't strew crap and get embarrassed. And even though he's not in the direct mix anymore, I would wager Cuban is still a very useful source.

So many questions....
I think we have to start with what could Detroit possibly be thinking. I don't buy that they just like THJ and want to take him off our hands and give us a younger and better player for a second round pick. Sorry. This has to be part of some bigger plan for them. Maybe it is moving up in the draft. Maybe they need a 2025 pick (they don't have one) to move up or to make a deal for LaVine or Grant or Kuzma or some such. Whatever it is, it isn't just a Dallas/Detroit thing because someone once said something nice about Hardaway.
I don't think we have to worry about Nico giving away a completely unprotected pick for Grimes. I love Grimes and think he's be a great fit. But, that isn't Nico's MO. Kyrie? Maybe. Not Grimes.
I do think 2025 is probably in play here. Pretend DJJ played for someone else and just had the season he had. Pretend also that he was signed for 3 years and $33mm. Would you turn down a deal of THJ/2025 protected first for Grimes/DJJ? That is essentially what you are getting here. I'll say it again. I don't see that happening for just a second rounder.
I wonder what such a deal means to Hardy and/or Green. Many seem to think of a Grimes acquisition as a sign Green is going elsewhere. Maybe. My mind first went to Hardy. Hardy and Grimes o the floor together feels small. Grimes isn't a PG, but it isn't like Hardy is either. If we are going to continue to keep one of Kyrie/Luka on the court, I like them playing with Grimes and Green more than I do Grimes and Hardy...especially with Kyrie and especially in the playoffs.

Another variation could be THJ+2025 (protected) for Grimes+#53+2027 2nd.
Then Green+2031+2027 2nd for Avdija.
Luka/Hardy/Exum
Kyrie/Grimes
Avdija/DJJ
PJ/Maxi/OMax/Morris
Lively/Gafford/Powell
If DJJ takes the full MLE, Mavs total roster salary is: 178,063,934 and has about 600k of room from the 1st apron.

I think Grimes is big enough. 6'5 205lbs. Basically the same measurables as THJ but has a 6'8 wingspan.
Hardy isn't small either. 6'4 200lbs. I will say they're both combo guards, but Grimes has shown the ability to playmake in small doses.
But I'm pretty convinced if Grimes comes in, Green is the one going out.

With a THJ for Grimes trade, I think both Green and Hardy could be viewed as expendable in the sense that their trade value might have more weight than their pecking order in the rotation.
Luka | Exum
Kai | Grimes
Trade* | DJJ
PJW | Maxi
Lively | Gafford
*A combination of Green + Hardy + draft picks can get to Deni territory imo.

We have to consider roster considerations. Mavs need to carry 14 guys AND stay under the 1st apron. We can't just throw guys into trades anymore.
Mavs have about vet min room if they send out Hardy and Green for Avdija (and keeping THJ). But that's cutting it close.

Huh? THJ is outgoing for Grimes in that scenario (all the rumors from today) . I didn’t add the whole 15-man roster in that post, but if you need a visual. All very legal and doable…
Luka | Exum | VetMin*
Kai | Grimes | Lawson
Deni | DJJ | Omax
PJW | Maxi | Morris
Lively | Gafford | Powell
THJ + pick(s) for Grimes
Green + Hardy + picks(s) for Deni
Re-sign DJJ up to full NTMLE
We can all argue about what the picks are. Maybe it’s 2 SRP’s to DET and 2 FRP’s to WAS. Don’t really care about that argument, just that I think something like the above is a realistic possibility.

I meant keeping DJJ. Phone auto correct betrayed me there.

-People believe Mavs have a deal on the table to trade Tim Hardaway Jr., but in a deal that would bring salary back. (Unclear as to how much)
-Mavs would be interested in Naji Marshall if they don’t manage to re-sign Derrick Jones Jr.

The Lakers, Pelicans and Spurs are three appealing potential trade destinations to Trae Young, per

Detroit doesn’t really have any bad salary. I guess they’re ready to pull the plug on some youngsters? Seems like they shouldn’t be that hard to dump.

The Lakers plan to keep the No. 17 overall pick instead of trade it, per

Some prospects within the mid-first could potentially crack Los Angeles’ rotation next season.

Fournier is the salary that stands out as bad.
But if he's in the deal the Mavs shouldn't have to send any draft capital even if Grimes is included.
Essentially the Mavs are being paid to swap out THJ with Fournier by getting Grimes.

I tend to agree. Would not be a fan of the 25 first round pick but you and SH made compelling thoughts about a protected first. I also wouldn't be a fan of losing Hardy. Green? I would need to see what we get back, but I don't know if I view Grimes as an upgrade.
The previous season before last when we played the KNicks, I made a comment on this board that Grimes looks like a 15-18 million dollar player that every team wants. Good shooter, plays a role, good defender, etc. He has really not been that player over the last year. So I really don't know what to think of him. He is not a creator, so I still think we would need at least one more wing who can create. I guess what I am saying, I don't know if this happens. If it does, it is probably more than we want to give up. I just hope it is not one of our few assets (25, 26, Hardy, Omax)

I really don't see why Detroit is willing to deal Grimes when he's the type of player they need to build around. He was hurt for the rest of the year after the trade, and didn't play. Why would you give up on him so easy? And he's a better overall player than THJ. All these rumors may prove to be just that.
