There’s also a difference between wanting a player, and being willing to pay the asking price.

You mention Naz Reid. Love him...at center. I think it is beyond a mistake for the Wolves to have THREE highly paid to medium highly paid centers in their rotation, trying to play two of them at a time. I think they have shot themselves in the foot so hard by trying to do that. I believe they will be out of the playoffs in round 1, and I don't feel I need to wait to see who they're playing to predict that. In fact, if I were them, Towns wouldn't make it past this trade deadline on the roster. Having said all of that, at least Reid and KAT can play OFFENSE on the perimeter, even if they can't guard once a team adequately spreads them out. These names we're talking about don't even seem to fit THAT well, as far as I can tell.
I have no use for two slow, paint-clogging bigs on the court at the same time...on either end of the court.
The Mavs need to improve shooting, playmaking and above all else DEFENSE (by adding someone who can MOVE, not a bigger traffic cone). I think the FORWARDS who are 6'7"-6'11" represent the more useful rock to turn over. If center is the first position listed for a player, their natural position, I just don't think that's the right guy.
I think there's a DFS-sized hole in your heart and we probably need to trade for him first before we can reasonably discuss any more acquisitions.
Seriously though, we can talk about the ideal player we need but I'd rather talk about players who are actually available and in our price range. Ideally, I'd rather not trade our only available first-round pick before this trade deadline. I'd rather acquire the versatile forward we require this coming off-season. Mvossman brought up Cam Johnson who would be an ideal fit here. I think he's the best 3&D in the NBA right now. I just happen to believe he'd cost 2 or 3 first-rounders.
WCJ for THJ would be a good swap for us. WCJ may not be great at guarding the perimeter but much of our rotation doesn't effectively guard the perimeter. Luka, THJ, Seth Curry, Hardy and Kleber all don't effectively guard the perimeter. Unlike those players, WCJ provides some resistance at the rim. More importantly, he would immediately be our best rebounder. He limits second chance opportunities which is our greatest weakness.
Offensively, he hits open 3-point shots and can handle to ball pretty well for a big. As others have noted, his footwork is really good and he is surprisingly nimble. Defensively, his metrics are always very positive.
Most importantly, he would likely be available for THJ as the Magic need shooting.
Carter Jr. is not a perfect fit here but I think he's the most perfect fit available that wouldn't require including a first-round pick.

There could be all sorts of reasons for doing nothing. That doesn't mean that weren't looking for a playmaker.
My point is that if they acquire a guard, then they still have a need.

The Mavs won't even entertain offers for Lively. He's untouchable just like Luka. He has so much upside and has exceeded everyone's expectations. He won't be moved.

Agree. I think he's been so good and the potential is so great that he will be our second-best player in two years. I am a huge Kyrie Irving fan and think he's an all-star. I just think Lively will be a top-25 player in the NBA when he's 21 years old.

I'm starting to toy with the idea of Deandre Hunter. His defensive metrics aren't good, and ATL fans haven't really said anything positive about him for a while,
But his frame and play style just works next to Luka and Kyrie. He doesn't have to be an all nba defender, just passable.
A 2 for 1 trade with THJ and Hardy+ 2nds for Hunter, then when Hayward gets bought out we grab him, and all of a sudden we are looking very pretty forward wise.
Luka/Curry
Kyrie/Green
Exum/Hayward/DJJ
Hunter/Maxi
Lively/Powell
Is a solid 11 man rotation. Then we prioritize Hartenstein in the summer and we rock and roll.
We then have Hunters contract as a trade piece for the next star and our 3 future firsts.

Hunter would be a significant defensive downgrade from DJJ in the starting lineup. Not sure that is what we are going for. I would also argue Timmy is a better player than Hunter. I'm not sure why we would be sending Hardy + 2nds.

We aren't a preferred destination for buy outs. That's just a pipe dream imo. The top buy outs will choose other teams. They always do.

It is a (relatively) new day... the rules are different regarding buyouts. Teams over the threshold have a decided disadvantage regarding the signing of buyouts.

[Buha] The Lakers and Hawks have discussed potential frameworks of a deal surrounding Dejounte Murray. LAL receives: Dejounte Murray. ATL receives: D’Angelo Russell, Jalen Hood-Schifino, 2029 first-round pick and additional draft compensation

Hawks fans are gonna lose their minds. That seems lighter than what they paid to get him. Might be the best offer they get though.

Spitball thought:
This process would be dependent on Brooklyn and NY really wanting to shed themselves of Dinwiddie and Fournier. I tried to make this deal acceptable with THJ in lieu of Williams, but it did not feel like a fit. What I cannot bring myself to accurately compute is how much draft compensation Brooklyn requires to make this one work.
NY trades:
Fournier, Jericho Sims, Achiuwa, & Grimes
NY Receives:
M. Morris; Seth Curry, and Grant Williams
BRK Trades:
Dinwiddie & DFS
BRK Receives:
Fournier, Richaun Holmes, & Hardy
Dallas Trades:
Curry, Morris, Williams, Hardy & Holmes
Dallas Receives:
Sims, Achiuwa, Grimes, DFS, & Dinwiddie

I might be off but that would feel like an overpay in my opinion. Clax is damn good but he's an expiring and gonna ask for a lot of money next July.
Imho Brooklyn needs to involve Mikal to have Mavs interest..something like THJ + Lively + OMax + picks for Bridges + Claxton.

If Lakers are making a play for Dejounte, it wouldn’t shock me if 1) Brooklyn was the third team to take D Lo and 2) Hawks find a way to convince LAL to take Clint Capela and shed further money off their books. Itll be interesting to see how it plays out
(@YossiGozlan)
I can see the first thing happening. The Brooklyn Nets are prioritizing 2025 cap space. If they can’t get upcoming free agents like Spencer Dinwiddie to agree to one year extensions, it would make sense to trade for players like D’Angelo Russell under contract for next season.
(@ChrisBHaynes)
Milwaukee Bucks are among multiple teams who are registering interest in trading for Atlanta Hawks star Dejounte Murray, league sources tell @NBAonTNT, @BleacherReport.
Evan Sidery (@esidery)
The Bucks would have to include Bobby Portis and Pat Connaughton to even make a legal trade for Dejounte Murray.
Milwaukee only has two tradable future draft picks: 2024 2nd (via Trail Blazers) + 2027 2nd.
(@esidery)
The Wizards are expected to eagerly act as a trade facilitator over the next few weeks, per @MikeAScotto ( https://hoopshype.com/lists/nba-trade-de...-pelicans/).
Washington is willing to take on unwanted salaries in multi-team deals for future draft picks and young players.

To be precise, the limits are ...

... Using Spotrax pages, there are 7 such teams: BOS MIL DEN LAC MIA PHX GS
2 They prohibit such a team from signing a player who is waived during the season, if the player's current year contracted salary was greater than the NT MLE.
There are currently 7 teams above the Mavs in the league-wide standings, who might be competing with the Mavs for such a player after a buyout, as well as teams like SAC LAL UT ORL.
