Seems like the modern era of Mavs moves involves identifying and going after distressed assets. From Kyrie and Jaden last year to Luka and Jalen back whenever that was, most moves seem to fit that profile in some sort of way. This thinking also seems to fit Cuban’s MO of trying to zag when everybody else is zigging.
All of which is to say, I’m not expecting the team to suddenly start valuing the draft like the rest of the league. And it’s easy to believe they would go after a guy like Ayton. Thus the intriguing thing about Dan’s contributions here, to me, is the notion that it might take half of the #10 pick instead of the whole to land him.
Pessimism doesn’t make you smart, just pessimistic.

NY was at about the cap, or maybe a bit under, when they started. And they only needed about 24M in cap room for JB. So they had to clear 24M in room or maybe a bit less. (Ultimately they cleared a bit more.)
PHI/MIA/PHX are 40-50M over the cap, and if they got to the cap, they would need to open another 40M or more in cap room beyond that to pay Kyrie. In real numbers, in light of charges for empty cap slots, they would have to get their existing payroll down to about 85M.
In theory PHI would be the best bet, but only if Harden walks, and even then they would just be at about the cap or a bit over. And they don't have any available FRPs or desirable players other than Maxey to use to get teams to take bad salary.
I can see a pretty realistic scenario in which Harden walks, and PHI trades Maxey+Harris to some team to carve out what's needed for Kyrie.
Of course it's a long shot. But out of all the teams mentioned, it's doable.

I would be shocked if they traded Maxey.
How much money would they get if they traded Harris for air? Could anyone take him for air? He is in his last year but wouldn't they need to include some kind of tip? For a team already minus first round picks, it is tough to swallow to send another asset in an Harris move. All for the right to have Embid and Kyrie on your roster. Seems like a suicide mission type of deal.
Morey always has 10 balls in the air though, and surprisingly seems land on his feet. He just has never won a championship. IMO, his biggest weakness is he is always chasing the shiny toy. They are in a tough spot though. Not sure what the answer is for them.

It doesn't work like that. With the 120M you theorize, it's either ....
OPTION 1 - 14M cap room FA [or the SNT you have in mind], 7.6M MLE (and no Kyrie).
OPTION 2 - Kyrie, 12.2M MLE FA, 4.5M BAE

Rather do this than Ayton or any LA package.

I've said it before, but I have no interest in handing Kyrie to the Lakers for their scraps. I for one do not believe Kyrie will go there for 30 million a year and even if he would, they have to gut their team to do so. That alone is priceless. At some point the Mavs can't continue to let players use them. I say call his bluff and if he wants to walk for less, good bye. As mentioned above Rui and Reeves need to come back if this move is going to help us and that isn't going to happen so I say keep Kryie or find another team to move him to.

Reaves
Vanderbilt
Beasley
Bamba
LAL 2030 2nd
Thats about it. Draft Wallace and sign Brooks with the exception. Luka/Reaves/Wallace/Hardy/Green is a dynamic backcourt for years. We still would have ammo for a big (young guards plus 2027 FRP)

I think it will take a lot more than that to get Ayton (more than I am interested in spending). I will also be stunned if the Mavs use their pick in the draft. Will we be able to use the MLE? Looks like you are assuming Wood walks. Are we signing Powell for the vet min? How much of a haircut does Kyrie need to take in order for us to use the full MLE?

A S&T of Reaves is problematic for Reaves. LA is limited to what it can pay unless it matches a free agent offer under the Arenas Rule.

Ah, i forgot LA would have to sign him first so he would lose like ~40 million off his max(which i think he gets). I guess i would take Rui in his place.
I’m not so sure there’s a willingness by LA to put up a real offer. If it’s just some combo of Rui plus Russell/Beasley/Bamba with no picks or Vanderbilt…..I’m out. The cap space would be more valuable. We have real leverage here no matter the situation
I lean more towards he stays at this point, but i do feel good we will not “Brunson” it up and we walk away with assets regardless

Absolutely. That's a fair trade both ways. Kyrie may be insane, but he's a superstar talent wise. I like that trade.

I didn’t want the Kyrie trade to happen. Said so too many times already, I know.
Having said that, now that it has happened…if they don’t re-sign him, I predict the actual, in reality alternative consequence of that is going to be soooooo much less exciting than the kind of thing you’re all kicking around in here. In that scenario, what the Mavs will end up with will be something not one of us would be excited about if someone was able to predict it in exact detail ahead of time.

You called this in real time for over a year. The 'extinction level event' post from several months ago (and a year ago) left me speechless and sick. I don't know how you are still sane.

Hah! We’re all Mavs fans. Were any of us sane to begin with?
