I just want to note that Tim MacMahon didn't seem to strike a negative tone here. Must have killed him inside.

How about this:
Trade THJ + a first + a second for Grant. THJ would help them improve their draft position. KP + JB + a second for Murray, Poeltl, and Vassell. Cut Burke and Moses and add Chriss. Luka/Murray/Green/Frank Murray/Green/Bullock/SBrown GK/Vassell/Green/Bullock/SBrown Grant/Vassell/Maxi/Powell/Chriss Poeltl/Maxi/Powell/Chriss/Bobi Murray's two-way play ought to ease the sting of losing JB. A decent big three with Luka, Murray, and Grant, and lots of glue. Easy offseason in which all you have to do is re-up GK.

He is not a great fit and its not a great contract, but he still provides needed offensive punch from the bench, which is important with Brunson in the starting lineup. I don't think there is nay way Spurs do that trade. They are giving up way too much value.

Numerous people questioned them playing together, and this stat what you post and in addition to the eye test just tells us that they are a fantastic fit together! I have for long wanted someone can take advantage of the space Luka creates not just by shooting, but also by driving in the paint as the space allows easier for this, and also passing it further. Brunson absolutely is the player that does all of this. At an incredible level! We need one more like Luka and Brunson and we will be unstoppable. Such as Sibonis.

That is one of the reasons I am so excited by this run: 1) Kidd is really reaching the full depths of this roster with "buy-in" and this team is NOT being kept alive by superstar play. They are winning as a TEAM. 2) If Luka and KP can buy in to what all the other players have bought into then I think this team can be a (low-level) contender as soon as this year (assuming Luka comes back to being close to what he can be). Luka has been almost a shell of himself with his availability and his play (shooting, first step, shot selection, etc) and this team is being incredibly competitive despite that.

Josh Green is a top 5 Mavs player...

This isn't meant to be a knock on KP, but starting games would it be wise for him to play similar to Maxi? Maybe with a few more cuts to the basket and quick post ups in secondary transition. But once we run our offense, shouldn't he spread the defense out and not have two players closer to the rim?
With Luka and Jalen starting at the moment, you really want the court spread so they can get into the lane. It will really be interesting to see if the style changes when KP is back.

I'm not an x and o's guy...and I don't know if this is similar to what you're suggesting... But I would love to see more kp spread floor out around arc...when Luka or jb drives and defense collapse...kp is trailing. The pass to kp who is going downhill at 7'3 with an open lane after defense collapsed on the initial driver(Luka or jb) for an easy easy dunk.

I just have to believe there is an happy medium between treating KP like Bullock waiting in the corner and having KP and Powell hanging inside the lane clogging driving lanes. Basketball is a feel and react game. Hopefully the more they play together the better they are of playing off each other. If they never are able to do this, then it may warrant a move down the road. There should be a way of getting KP near the basket when he has a short guy on him but also keep the floor open for Luka and Jalen drives. It doesn't need to be either or imo.

I think you want to keep the O diverse and keep the D guessing. So some involvement in the flow of the offense from KP is important. He cuts and passes well and gets good post position in early offense sometimes. Just like I don’t want Luka dribbling out the clock for 10 seconds and then taking a contested step back, I really don’t have much interest in KP trying to back his man down. If there is a time for KP to “get his” (be a little more selfish without giving up the good flow of the offense), it is when he’s in without Luka (probably with Maxi and Brunson). Similarly, Luka can “get his” (again without destroying flow) when KP is out. Between DFS, THJ, Bullock and Green, there are plenty of wings to spread around between those two groupings. Second units aren’t equipped to handle either Luka or KP. When the starters are in, everyone moves the ball and we look for great shots. There is reason to believe from the lineup data that KP, Powell, DFS, Brunson and Luka can work just fine. You just have to look at data outside the first few weeks. |
