Would Grant even want to play here?
And...is "he isnt in control...its a business and he can be traded if Detroit wants to move him" what we are relying on as an excuse to make this trade seem worthwhile?
A lot of posters on this board have been clamoring for Grant...even suggesting to try and snag him shortly after he was traded to Detroit.
I guess what I see as being the big hurdle here is Grant specifically going to Detroit so he could show off his offensive skills...and supposedly because of Black Onwer/GM or Coach or something.
If both of those are true...that seems like a pretty big deal of where Grants head is.
Would he like playing Luka ball? Or would be get disinterested like KP?
Im assume Grant is a professional and will act/play like a professional anywhere he is traded...but pulling that guy out of a situation he likes seems kind of risky.
I think his contract might be up soon...so that factors into things...especially if Detroit doesnt want to resign him. But we already know he took less money or equal money to leave Denver. He wants to score the ball. Mavs need scoring...but will this dude be happy with Luka ball?
I like Grant too...I just see him as possibly not liking it here.

Luka + THJ + Brunson formed a quality playoff backcount in Carlisle's system
If Cade is the "next Luka," you can see the appeal for Carlisle disciple Dwayne Casey
THJ went to Michigan so he fits. Brunson is an East coast guy. He fits.
Hayes is a 6' 5" guy who projects to defend but he's a 24 min developmental player right now. There's plenty of minutes for him alongside Cade + THJ + Brunson. Maybe Hayes fills a Josh Richardson role while he develops.
The bigger question which I didn't even think about is whether or not Grant would want to play in Dallas. But he certainly fits what the Mavs need.

We know Detroit pursued Hardaway heavily in the offseason, reportedly offering him a bigger deal than the one he got in Dallas. Detroit needs quality high volume shooting and that's THJ's super power. Brunson brings veteran leadership and would immediately start.
Grant is an ideal fit for Kidd's defensive system. A Shawn Marion type.
Mavs are giving up two starter quality, heavy minute guys, so they may take a step back in the W/L column but I think a deal like this is the right move long term, and it puts them in a better position to play quality playofff basketball.
Luka -- Burke
Bullock -- Ntilikina
DFS -- Brown
Grant -- Kleber
KP -- WCS/Powell
Love the idea. Would've loved it more had they just made a run at him when he was a free agent the way some of us wanted them to, but better late than never.
The only problem is that Kidd has repeatedly said he doesn't want to start games with Porzingis at Center. I think you're barking up the exact right tree here, myself, but until we see some indication of a change in that philosophy I think it's kind of a waste of good ideas. We should probably be trying to figure which center can be brought in to replace Powell/WCS minutes (not an insignificant amount).
Again, not how I'd approach things - I'd do exactly what you're trying to accomplish.

I think you can accomplish what Kidd wants to do with Grant in the mix, you'll just move Bullock to the bench and start bigger. Remember, I think Kidd really just wants to burn some regular season minutes to keep KP healthy... I'm on board with starting WCS or some other non shooting big next to KP, for 5-7 minutes to open each half.
I think you can start games with Luka and a pair of big defensive wings in DFS and Grant, along with KP and WCS. That's a super long athletic group who can cover a lot of ground. DFS already defends the point of attack and Luka has the ball so much you don't really need another guard next to him as long as you have someone else on the floor who can make a play. Grant is a better playmaker than THJ. WCS/Powell should be passable for 14-24 min. If not, I think you can find a decent replacement on the bottom of someone's roster.

Of course, THJ signed in Dallas for less than Detroit offered him. He probably wouldn't be happy either but as they say "It's a business."

My only, and albeit small, hesitation with a deal like that is we would desperately have to get some bench scoring. If THJ/Brunson are gone then our bench scorers fall back to Brown/Frank/Burke/WCS which might be the weakest bench in the league.
I'd try to call up Houston and offer them Powell+WCS for Eric Gordon+Theis.
The salaries all work too.
Mavs would then run
Luka -- Ntilikina-- Burke
Bullock -- Gordon
DFS -- Brown
Grant -- Kleber
KP -- Theis -- Boban

Mavs wouldn't even be interested in trading Timmy if he didn't suddenly drop 6 percentage points from the field and play no defense.

If you deal THJ+Brunson it would definitely be good to add to the bench. Maybe you could entice a buyout veteran. Remember, we're still expecting Dragic to be a late season addition.

I forgot about my obsession with wanting Brooks. He’s a bigger want than RoCo, but I’d love both!

Mavs mentioned as a (theoretical, no insider stuff) destination for LeVert, but several doubts he makes sense as he is not a good enough shooter or defender. They see San Antonio as a destination for Sabonis, discuss Charlotte or GSW as good fits for Turner.

Never really was a big fan of LaVert. Maybe he's a much better THJ upgrade? Just don't see it. If the Pacers didn't extend Brogdon I'd be all over that.

Even crazier, if you go to the top 50 in 3PA, last year only ONE player shot under 34%, this year 17 players are shooting under 34%. It's not how the game is being called. I think we are still adjusting to the new ball.

Think I finally found a reasonable tradefor three struggling franchises:
Porzingis + Warren to Sacramento
Turner + Levert + Bagley to Dallas
Barnes + THJ + Kleber to Indiana
New S5:
Fox
Haliburton
Warren
Porzingis
Holmes
Brogdon
THJ
Barnes
Kleber
Sabonis
Doncic
LeVert
DFS
Bagley
Turner

Man I'd love if the Pacers are dumb enough to trade Turner. I think he'd be a perfect C for Luka. You obviously would have to trade KP, I think, but if we could get a decent wing for him...

Next game is a perfect opportunity to convince them that rebuild is a must. Since they just registered a nice win, two in a row might make them change their mind

It's been very strange to see Frank lose minutes to Josh Green recently despite Frank being super solid practically every time he's been on the floor. Green has definitely held his own the last couple times out but it kind of feels to me like we're showcasing him...am I the only one thinking that?
(Sorry to derail, just needed to post this thought somewhere so if there's somewhere else to have this convo happy to go there)
