If anything, I'd be really disappointed if Dallas cut a young prospect just to make room for a known chemistry killer who is about to be on his 9th team in 8 years.
That's fine, but if not Rondo, then who is
1 readily available
2 can be an actual playable secondary creator, rather than just a spare that isn't ever playable, and
3 will NOT cost something in talent that we'd rather keep instead
Given the criteria, players who have bothersome flaws in one area or another are probably going to be part of most (if not all) of our choices. And imo "nothing" is the worst answer. So if not Rondo, then who?

KL, if that's supposed to be Rubio, I don't think he fits criteria #1, which is that he be readily available.
To get him, the Cavs packaged T Prince (much younger, regular rotation player in CLE, had been a full-time starter prior to the 20-21 season that included about 2/3 of it in CLE). In making the swap, the Cavs also assumed the bigger salary, plus they sent out a pick and some cash.
That's a move that says they traded for Rubio because they wanted him. If they didn't, they would have just done nothing instead. I've never understood the discussion of Rubio, frankly, as if the Cavs don't want him.
In addition, Rubio's contract is almost as big as Dragic's, which means he would present the same sort of match and asset obstacles that are there with Dragic.

Seriously, I would rather watch Burke than Rondo. Rondo and Burke have the same NBA 2K ratings for playmaking PG's. Not that a video game would substitute for analytics.

I take Rondo, if they throw in Aldama, Tillman or Clarke.
You do them a favour by eating that full contract. They are nowhere near the cap floor, so that´s a legit $8M off their books. Otherwise they´ll just have to waive Oturu, Konchar and Merriman. Plus deal with some Rondo drama potentially, though they were hardly bothered by Igoudala, so....

As an aside I'm fully convinced NBA 2K hasn't watched a basketball game for 7 years based on how their casino disguised as a video game operates.

I get what you're saying, and on paper Rondo definitely fills a need. And it's true that outside of Cuban, Dirk, and the fans that everyone that Rondo burned bridges with is no longer with the organization.
The big red flag I struggle to get past (other than my personal dislike of him based on his prior stint here) is that the guy's been on 6 different teams since his time with the Mavs, and none of them wanted to keep him around more than a single season outside of the Lakers who had him for two. The Hawks gave him a two year deal and traded him at the first opportunity, and the Clippers did the same thing after half a season.
It just seems like the dude brings so much negative energy that the juice isn't worth the squeeze, and I'm not sure that doing nothing would be a worse option than signing Rondo (but I'll be the first to admit that I am very biased against him since he's my least favorite player).

I'd rather bring DSJ back now that Carlisle's gone. He actually was pretty solid in Detroit after finally escaping the Knicks. Shot better than 35% from deep and a better assist/TO ratio in Detroit than Rondo did last season for either of his teams. There were even reports he wanted to come back here

Seems like Lauri (or his agent) is looking for a BIG payday. Probably in excess of 18mil a year starting. Which would make sense as to why he hasn't signed with NOP and use their 17mm trade exception.
Too rich for my blood. Lauri may be a little delusional here.

Hopefully his agent remembers TWO names:
Nerlens Noel
&
Dennis Schroeder

Sometimes, having nothing is better than the something you can get. I sure am hungry and thirsty, but I'll pass on the poison and hemlock.
You go ask Dirk again, if he thought having "something" in Rondo. was in hindsight, better than having nothing. (and Rondo actually still had some stuff) Just a simple "yes" or "no", not a "well, we were thinking....", but yes or no. He'll tell you "nothing" was the better option, as will just about everyone on that roster, I bet, if they are being gut level honest, and not trying to avoid throwing a guy under the bus. So yeah, "Nothing" isn't the worse option between "nothing" and Rondo.

I remember not too long ago someone posting Lauri's agent was relatively new to all this. I believe Lauri is his only notable player. I think both of them are trying to cash in on a payday and may not care about recent horror stories of passing up money.
Still, if Lauri is trying to squeeze as hard as he can for a big contract then no matter what he isn't going to become a Maverick. He'll have to take the biggest paycut to get here, on top of sacrificing touches to KP and Luka.

If Lauri is stubbornly holding out for $18 mil/per, there's a word creeping into my consciousness... it begins with "D" and ends with "umbass."

The thread that makes the most sense to me is that the player and agent simply want a bigger contract than any (able) team is willing to offer.

I definitely think this is the most likely scenario.
I think the minority scenario is CHI waiting till the investigation is over. That makes a TON of sense to me, but I am assuming a lot about that process which ultimately I don't know or understand.

I'm here as well. I think TxBamanut also stated something to the effect of KP has a fragile ego (me interjecting, similar to Monte Ellis) who seems to gravitate toward the negative. Put Rondo here and similar to the Ellis end here, Rondo could get in KP's head and create more than what is there. We should be weary of that IMO.
