Situation was different in that Brooklyn bought him out with multiple years left and Dallas made up the rest of the buyout.  When that timeframe was up, he got more than the MLE.

Okay so that's like one situation where we see a guy make okay money after a buyout but he wasn't breaking the bank:

Drummond might be in sort of a unique situation but I still would be surprised if he gets over MLE honestly. Montrezl Harrell only got a 1 yr MLE deal. A year or two ago we would have thought he would have gotten a massive deal. I only bring up Harrell bc he is a big man with limitations but can score and rebound.

Hollinger: You’re basically hoping he can give you a decent 15 minutes as a fourth forward, using his shooting, ballhandling and general basketball IQ to offset the fact that he can’t jump anymore. (Seriously. Dude has two blocks and zero dunks in 626 minutes.) Also, this insight depends on the “shooting” part coming back since he’s at 31.5 percent from 3 this year.
The big worry is what to do with him at the defensive end, since he can’t jump enough to protect the rim but opponents also are hunting him out on the perimeter. Again, you’re hoping that hiding him in bench units can offset some of the carnage. Unless for some reason you think your performance staff can get more out of him than Detroit’s did, but I’m not sure why any team would think that.
Amick: Leave it to Hollinger to come correct with the numbers: two blocks and zero dunks in 626 minutes?! Goodness gracious. That line alone makes you feel like Blake’s days of being an impactful NBA player are done, but — as DA said — it’s hard to handicap the health front and the question of whether or not he might be able to have a resurgence of some kind at some point.

Take the name off the back of the jersey, and he's a borderline G League player.

RE: ROSTER TALK: Trade/FA Ideas (Mar 25 TDL) + Salary Chart - StepBackJay - 02-17-2021

I think Blake will join a contender and look better when he's playing for something. But Mavs aren't going to be in that mix.

RE: ROSTER TALK: Trade/FA Ideas (Mar 25 TDL) + Salary Chart - StepBackJay - 02-17-2021

The plan is clear: trade for Kyle Lowry and sign Drummond post buy-out. GET ER DONE Donnie!

Don't you think it's more likely, heck almost guaranteed, that Drummond will be headed to the Nets post buyout?
Starting role: Check
Contender/superteam status: Check
No chance to be pulled because of lineups: Check.

Those are 3 things the Nets can offer that the Mavs can't. So why is it that Blake damaged goods Blake (which is the only reasons why he's available), is more likely to go to a contender, while Drummond isn't?

Just wondering your thought process here.

By the way, totally agree Lowry would be a great move. But at the 30mil salary, it'd take Powell+JJohnson at the least and I doubt the Raps would take that kind of package for Lowry.

Given his age and what he'll want for his next contract, the Nets aren't the long term play.  That would be my pitch to him anyway for joining the Mavs if the MBT are interested.  I still think your assumption is correct.

The Nets might not be the ones to hand Drummond his next contract, but they sure as heck will be the BEST place for him to showcase himself for the next suitor. There is no other place besides maybe TOR that can offer Drummond the kind of role he'd have on the Nets.

He'd be able to get all of his numbers, and would barely have to create for himself. I could genuinely see him averaging close to 19/19 on the Nets. Then after he puts up big numbers and perhaps even show he can be on a team that can go deep in the playoffs, some team will undoubtedly toss big money. Maybe NYK.

I'm not arguing against you as I'm almost sure he'll go to a contender.  I'm just working out my best pitch for the Mavs.

I think he could put up massive numbers in Dallas though.  We can argue all we want about fit but this team doesn't rebound and once you have that skillset on the floor, you can overlook some of the defensive shortcomings that pairing him with KP might cause.  We suck at defense anyway and at least with him you wouldn't be giving up two, three and four second chance attempts due to not securing defensive rebounds.

RE: ROSTER TALK: Trade/FA Ideas (Mar 25 TDL) + Salary Chart - KillerLeft - 02-17-2021

I guess I’m in the minority, but I don’t expect Drummond to get another good contract. I think the MLE is the absolute best he can hope for, moving forward. He isn’t a very good player. Didn’t seem like good teams wanted him the last time around, even.

We’ll see.

RE: ROSTER TALK: Trade/FA Ideas (Mar 25 TDL) + Salary Chart - StepBackJay - 02-17-2021

I wouldn't call the Mavs the favorite for Drummond but you never know. Guys have their reasons why they would join one team or another. Drummond will be looking for a contract more than he will a ring. He's only 27 years old. Mavs for sure would be a place for him to showcase his talents.

RE: ROSTER TALK: Trade/FA Ideas (Mar 25 TDL) + Salary Chart - StepBackJay - 02-17-2021

What I want is our version of Harrell who can pile up points off the bench. Powell did an okay version of that but has slowed down a bit. Drummond would feast on passes from Luka. We need to make the offense easier. 3's are nice but we need more rim rolling in Rick's offense.

Oh I know we're on the same side here. I guess I'm just adjusting my stance and trying to present it more clearly for others. Or maybe I just like talking into the void lol.

I agree for sure the Mavs would be a good place for Drummond surely because we are in desperate need for rebounding. But I can also see Drummond being turned off playing under Rick Carlisle. I can see RC benching Drummond for multiple games either for defensive lapses or offensive fit/issues.

And if I'm Drummond, why would I want to go play somewhere where there's even an inkling of that happening, when I can go to a bonafide contender AND get 35mpg. He can have his cake and eat it too.

RE: ROSTER TALK: Trade/FA Ideas (Mar 25 TDL) + Salary Chart - StepBackJay - 02-17-2021

Its just hard to say how what he would decide but Mavs would definitely be in the running. Rick knows how to use a guy like Drummond. Does Drummond want to play with aholes like Kyrie and Harden? I mean maybe? But he also might like Dallas' squad.

I mean today, yes, Drummond seems like an MLE player at best. But what if Drummond goes to a contender, plays starter minutes, averages an absurd statline (something in the realm of 17ppg/18rpg, which is actually doable for him), and then also goes on a deep playoff run?

Drummond would have proved all his doubters wrong that he can be a starter on a good team and can be played in the playoffs.

I can see a team throwing 20+ a year at him for that alone.

On the other hand its very possible Drummond goes to the Nets, averages an absurd statline, but his limitations get the best of him in the playoffs and the Nets get an early exit. And in that scenario I can see Drummond only getting an MLE at best.

RE: ROSTER TALK: Trade/FA Ideas (Mar 25 TDL) + Salary Chart - ItsGoTime - 02-17-2021

Esp after seeing that Griffin's 3% dropped, I'm for sure out on him.

If we were to get Drummond for next to nothing in trade (or as a negative asset in trade to get a real target) or min contract, I take the wait and see what he's got approach.

Only 6 weeks left. If Johnson is still on the roster after the deadline I will probably complain for the rest of the season. There has to be a way to turn a large expiring into a solid rotation piece.

So the thing is the rotation piece you would upgrade would probably be WCS' spot which could be hard to do as he hhas played well as the 8th man.

Don´t really care about the position. The Mavs need to add talent. This is more about smart asset management. Going for max capspace this summer is a terrible idea. One of the worst FA markets in history. If the Mavs cannot upgrade the roster they should use his contract to absorb some bad longterm salary in exchange for assets.
If they waste another expiring to create capspace for the next Wes Matthews, Harrison Barnes or Delon Wright I am going to be insufferable for the rest of the year.

So ya I mean the Mavs could try to get a rebounder I guess? Not sure. Just saying it will be hard to get someone who can crack the top 8. A bought-out Drummond is probably our best bet but there will be competition for him.

Gallo is a guy I really like but if ATL plans to trade Collins this summer they might want to hang onto Gallo?
