Everyone should have seen his value and potential when he was with the Lake Show.  Smile

Funny how many of those guys have gone on to build viable careers with other teams once they got off that Kobe-Farewell transition era Lake Show (Ingram, Randle, Clarkson, D'Angelo, etc.)

Clarkson is probably the most surprising and his run this year is a feel good story.  Snyder and Malone are probably my favorite two coaches in the league as they have a knack for getting the most out of people.

There were early reports that he might be available. But of course they would not be just giving him away. Mavs desperately need defensive leader. Luka will never be that, I don't see it. He just doesn't enjoy playing defense, it is all about offense for him. He can play good defense, if he wants to, though. I just don't see it in him to really want it for extended periods. Perhaps in the playoffs. So if you want the team to be good on defense, you need a loud and respected voice holding everyone accountable.

What about Phoenix? They made a CP3 move which made them good, but probably not really contender level good. On the other hand their CP3 window is extremely short and they might face a steep drop off in two seasons despite the growth from their young core. Ayton is nice but he is not ready yet. So here is a fun idea: KP+Kleber+Terry for Ayton+Bridges+Crowder+Saric (need the last two to match salaries)

Man a Drummond buy-out signing would be amazing.

RE: ROSTER TALK: Trade/FA Ideas (Mar 25 TDL) + Salary Chart - StepBackJay - 02-16-2021

No matter what Drummond needs to be an MLE target for the Mavs. He would get easy buckets all over the place.

The MLE target is Daniel Theis. Stronger and more physical version of Maxi on defense. Solid rim runner and pick and roll finisher on offense.

Theiss sets real man like screens, not like KP or Maxi. I also love his intensity. But, KP doesn't like to play next to a rim roller.

That would be a great deal for the Mavs, except that Ayton is the best player in the deal, and the other three Phoenix are sending are likely better than Kleber. If the Mavs threw in a future first and a decade's worth of 2nd rounders, the Suns might not hang up prior to negotiating even further.

No he is not. He is way worse and one dimensional on offense and not really a defensive juggernaut. Bridges is the prize of the trade from Phoenix, imho. Saric and Crowder are at Kleber level, but there is no other way to match KP contract.

He'd probably ring chase and then look for his next long term contract in the offseason.

He'll do better than the MLE.

Ya maybe but then if he was that great wouldn't someone trade for him?

RE: ROSTER TALK: Trade/FA Ideas (Mar 25 TDL) + Salary Chart - StepBackJay - 02-16-2021

It's not 100% that Drummond gets bought out but if he does I doubt he would get a big deal the next year. I don't recall a guy getting bought out and then landing an above MLE level deal the next year. In fact I think usually the contracts are pretty sub-par.

The Demarcus Cousins route? Most likely. I think he runs to the Nets where he's a day 1 starter C for them. They desperately need him and he desperately wants to showcase himself. Don't think the Mavs are even his 2nd or 3rd option, no matter how needed his rebounding is.

I think if I'm the Mavs I'm eyeing a Blake Griffin buyout and hope he has something left. He can serve as a good creator/shooter big man for the 2nd unit. And can flex as a starter in place of Maxi.

It'd be a nice influx of talent too, since we're not even 2 years away from Griffin making an All-NBA team. This is all assuming he has anything left, which there's a solid chance he doesn't. But like I said before, even Griffin at his worst is better than whatever Wes Iwundu is giving us right now.

After reading the Athletic article on him, I don't think he can help the Mavs even at vet min.

Hollinger: You’re basically hoping he can give you a decent 15 minutes as a fourth forward, using his shooting, ballhandling and general basketball IQ to offset the fact that he can’t jump anymore. (Seriously. Dude has two blocks and zero dunks in 626 minutes.) Also, this insight depends on the “shooting” part coming back since he’s at 31.5 percent from 3 this year.
The big worry is what to do with him at the defensive end, since he can’t jump enough to protect the rim but opponents also are hunting him out on the perimeter. Again, you’re hoping that hiding him in bench units can offset some of the carnage. Unless for some reason you think your performance staff can get more out of him than Detroit’s did, but I’m not sure why any team would think that.
Amick: Leave it to Hollinger to come correct with the numbers: two blocks and zero dunks in 626 minutes?! Goodness gracious. That line alone makes you feel like Blake’s days of being an impactful NBA player are done, but — as DA said — it’s hard to handicap the health front and the question of whether or not he might be able to have a resurgence of some kind at some point.

That's basically what I'm saying, if you want a look at Drummond this year, you need to trade for him as I think he'd run to the Lakers or Nets if he gets bought out.  I wouldn't mind trying to recruit Blake if he gets bought out, but I think you might run into a similar situation.  I also don't think trading for one eliminates the potential of chasing the other if they get bought out.

Dallas did it with DWill.

Situation was different in that Brooklyn bought him out with multiple years left and Dallas made up the rest of the buyout.  When that timeframe was up, he got more than the MLE.

Blake?  What a terrible idea. Sounds made up. Drummond? Would kick the tires.

One scenario is more likely than the other imo.

Blake is having a down year. The chances of a resurgence are low. But his sheer talent level alone is enough to give him a min contract. And him as a min guy coming off your bench? He'd be great.

He can still score at least 6-10 points a night and pass the ball well. We need a guy that can do that consistently off the bench. THJ/Brunson work for the guard position, but can we trust Powell/WCS to do that every night? So far the answer to that is no.

And Blake brings something that WCS/Powell don't have and that's a pretty good 3pt shot. I don't know. I just have a feeling that Blake could shine in a role where he's asked to be the 4th option now and paired next to a creator like Luka he'd  feast on the open looks. Plus his passing game works really well with another big as shown from Lob City and him with Drummond.
