RE: ROSTER TALK: DAL with $22.7M - $34.4M in capspace | FA starts Aug 2, 5 pm - DanSchwartzgan - 07-04-2021 (07-04-2021, 09:27 AM)Hypermav Wrote: I like the idea of DeRozan with KP and Luka. Get rid of Boban (gasp) and Powell and get a better defensive minded rim roller. Lets see what Kidd can do with KP for half a year and if doesn't improve, then there is always the trade deadline. Grab a Batum type and I think the Mavs are close. I typically shudder when I read ideas that include trading Powell. But, if DeRozan is the guy, I think this has merit. I'm hopeful for a larger role for Green and see issues with Green, Powell and DeRozan on the same team. We are just talking about the backup C here, so it doesn't have to be a star. But, someone like Olynyk would probably fit better than Powell in a world where you are trying to get minutes for DeRozan and Green the next three years. I'm always up for trading Powell, but it will probably cost an asset and we have so little in that department. I think you can work around DeRozan and Powell. You are probably going to stagger Luka and DeRozan, and you can can play Powell with Luka when DeRozan is not on the floor. Also, if you are getting DeRozan you have limited cap left to improve the team. I don't think you need to start a 4 when you have DeRozan/DFS/Luka as all are bigger good rebounding wings. I would rather spend that remaining cap on a 3&D wing to go with KP/DeRozan/DFS/Luka (maybe Green). This is all assuming we don't trade KP. That of course would open all kinds of options. RE: ROSTER TALK: DAL with $22.7M - $34.4M in capspace | FA starts Aug 2, 5 pm - Branduil - 07-04-2021 Luka/DDR/KP would be an absolute nightmare defensively. Like even if you added Kawhi and the (career prime) ghost of Bill Russell it would still be terrible. This is obviously true, but doesn’t address the other goal I mentioned…a larger role for Green. The staggers you outline work if everyone else can hit their 3’s. I’m afraid it might limit Green’s development and I’d like a path for Green to develop into at least a 12 minute backup this season. San Antonio made it work with DeRozan and at least one other non 3-point shooter. But, we have higher aspirations and the Spurs are largely devoid of 3 point shooters. So, they had no choice. Which is why I’m hoping SA will take KP in a s&T and we can fill out the roster appropriately around Luka/Derozan. I also thought Prepelic´s rights were passed around to the Mavs, but must have been some other player from the Balkans, who also starts with P. Anyway boomark Nov 19th 2021. That´s the day the two year doping ban of Satnam Singh will be lifted and we take over the world. RE: ROSTER TALK: DAL with $22.7M - $34.4M in capspace | FA starts Aug 2, 5 pm - loki - 07-05-2021 I think Dallas needs to land 4 rotation players this offseason to have a real shot at winning a playoff series. Not going to be easy at all. The key may be in finding a way to turn any signings into sign and trades in order to operate over the cap. Luka / Brunson ?? / ?? DFS ?? / Kleber Porzingis / ?? I still believe Mike Conley is the most sensible target due to fit and their desire to land a big name. Richardson + Burke + Terry + Green would work in a SnT for Conley at $50m/2. The Mavs should be looking for takers for Richardson and Burke as one or both would probably need to go to a third team. Then you've theoretically got about $13m left in cap space. Enough to offer a deal to someone like Theis and turn it into a SnT for WCS at $7m per. Next re-sign THJ, spend the MLE on Batum, and fill out the roster with minimum contracts. Luka / Brunson Conley / THJ DFS Batum / Kleber Porzingis / Theis RE: ROSTER TALK: DAL with $22.7M - $34.4M in capspace | FA starts Aug 2, 5 pm - Kammrath - 07-05-2021 (07-05-2021, 11:51 AM)loki Wrote: I think Dallas needs to land 4 rotation players this offseason to have a real shot at winning a playoff series. Upgrading talent is important and has to be front and center for the front office. BUT, I think they will win a playoff series (or two) almost no matter what now. Luka is too good and I think the dysfunction and chemistry issues should mostly be behind them. I think those were holding them back more than anything. I truly believe Luka can elevate random dudes to great levels and will do so this coming season. RE: ROSTER TALK: DAL with $22.7M - $34.4M in capspace | FA starts Aug 2, 5 pm - HoosierDaddyKid - 07-05-2021 (07-05-2021, 12:04 PM)Kammrath Wrote: Upgrading talent is important and has to be front and center for the front office. Luka could do it, I'm sure. But it's up to the Coach and F.O. to have a vision on how they want to play. What are they going to do to fix the roster? Kidd has coaching experience, but he hasn't been great in his previous stops. Other teams will improve as well. Are they going to be primarily a P&R team, a trapping defensive team that shoots 3"s, or a team that forces tempo? You have to have the personnel to play each style. Luka can't do it all by himself, though he'll damn sho try. RE: ROSTER TALK: DAL with $22.7M - $34.4M in capspace | FA starts Aug 2, 5 pm - KillerLeft - 07-05-2021 (07-05-2021, 04:33 PM)HoosierDaddyKid Wrote: Are they going to be primarily a P&R team, a trapping defensive team that shoots 3"s, or a team that forces tempo? Kidd's most influential coaching move, so far, was to make Giannis Milwaukee's point guard, a move I think started them on a dead-end path (Holiday and Middleton are handling the ball more this season, and that's improving things). The Mavs have been a pick-and-roll team for so long most of us can't imagine them playing any other way. They will probably continue to be that way, to an extent, because it's currently the most popular play style in the league. But, I'm not sure we can make any assumptions just yet. We legit don't know what Kidd (who was NOT a pick and roll player) will do yet. I agree with you about what he SHOULD do, of course. Isn't that the idea, bring in a guy who will give Luka the keys of the O and not have a real dog/ego in that fight? A coach that can focus on coaching the defensive end and player relationships? That's at least what I imagine being why you would want Kidd to coach Luka. We won't know until the preseason, at least. But, I would hope there's a lot more to Kidd's game than simply letting Luka do what he wants. Allowing Luka freedom to make real time decisions during games is one thing (I feel like that's how it has already been around here) but someone who isn't 22 needs to design, install and tweak an offensive system here, or this is going to get really ugly really fast.
