And for the record, an exchange of picks is not a pick swap.  A pick swap are two teams swapping picks in the same draft based on draft position.  Exchanging picks in different seasons is just a regular trade.

I do think GS got more out of him than expected, and there were signs of improvement. But, ultimately, he's pretty available, right? So, it's not like they're dying to keep building around him.

And, most importantly, this situation in Dallas is not likely to be as solid and organized as the GS situation with Kerr, Curry and Green, etc. Especially next year, since everyone in the building will be starting from scratch, finding their way. The entire identity of the organization will be up in the air, in a state of transition. Maybe not the best time to have a guy like Wiggins around.

That´s a legit concern. I am higher on Wiggins than most because of his improvement this season. He was a mediocre defender that made some highlight plays before he joined the Warriors. This season he has been among the best wing defenders in the league. Really good on ball defense. Still some questionable decisions and missed rotations but less mistakes compared to his Wolves days. Big question. Is this more about Draymond being the best "on court" coach in the league or Wiggins finally figuring it out.
Same for the offense. He looked more mature. Better shot selection. More catch and shoot. Better 3-point percentage. Reduced the amount of long 2s.
If the Mavs can get the Warriors version of Wiggins I would be all over it. If he reverts back to his no defense/midrange chucking ways I want nothing to do with him.

So if a team comes to you and offers you an unprotected 2023 FRP for DFS or Brunson or Maxi or a somewhat worse contract for an opted-in Richardson, do you take it just so you can saddle up if Beal, Lavine come available at next year's TDL?

Basically, how much are you willing to give up simply to have all your draft pick ammunition back?

This! 2023 FRP is the most important asset we need to build a true contender over the next 2 years. I Was thinking about giving the knicks brunson for our own 2023 pick, which will be a low one as long as luka is healthy.

Or, option C:

Maybe it was never about Wiggins' talent, or what he understood tactically in a general sense, but more about how much he loves (or doesn't love) the grind of preparing off-court, between games, in order to be prepared for each matchup. Maybe the Warriors and the standard they've established held him more accountable than he had been in the past.

RE: ROSTER TALK: DAL with $22.7M - $34.4M in capspace | FA starts Aug 2, 5 pm - loki - 06-19-2021

I also don't see a team trading an unprotected 1st two years out for a role player. And from the Mavs perspective this seems like desperation. Even with all their picks available, trading for a player like Beal or Lavine is very unlikely. Jrue Holiday is a step below both of them and look how expensive he was to land.

Dallas should focus on hitting 2-3 doubles this offseason (which I think is well within reach) rather than waiting around for a home run that's never going to come.

Maybe he found to god and is a better man and player now.

Or he was just a roleplayer this season and his lack of understanding and his bad attitude weren't exposed as much in this role.

Orcam's razor says he is still not someone you want on your team.

RE: ROSTER TALK: DAL with $22.7M - $34.4M in capspace | FA starts Aug 2, 5 pm - loki - 06-19-2021

Back on the KP for Hayward idea...one other nice benefit is that it would free another $2.3m in cap space. Let's say Dallas were to dump Burke to OKC and decline the team option on WCS. They would then have enough money to sign 3 free agents if they negotiate well.

Something along the lines of THJ at 64/4, Holmes at 72/4, and another $10m remaining for a Danny Green, Alec Burks, Goran Dragic, or whoever you prefer. Add another piece with the rMLE and you're looking at a really solid team.

If JRich ruins things by opting in you may have to drive a harder bargain with Holmes and/or move Terry/Green. Then try to land that $10m player through a sign and trade. I say threaten him with no trade and permanent benching if he opts in  Big Grin

I'm thinking of a roster that looks something like this:

Luka / Brunson
$10m FA / THJ
Hayward / Green
DFS / Kleber
Holmes / rMLE

The only contracts you would have in 2024 are Luka, THJ, and Holmes. It would be possible to go for another star at that point like Booker, Brown, or KAT.

Another option would be to plan for 2023 cap space and Jokic, Embiid, or Beal by trading KP for a 2 year contract like Wiggins. You could argue this makes more sense with Luka already having a connection to Jokic.

These projected #s on Dinwiddle are insane.... Like why is it under consideration he's getting above MLE? Coming off a torn acl, not a good shooter. Put up one big season on inefficient shooting.

The good thing is Donnie or whoever wanted him is gone....

A tall (6’ 6”) and competent point guard with good length (6’ 8.5”wingspan). 37% on 2 catch-and-shoot 3-pt attempts per game last season. Experience playing with other ball-dominant guards with success (Russell, Irving, and LeVert). The ACL injury was a partial tear. Just turned 28. Sign me up.

Not my plan A but a Josh Richardson (opt-in) for Spencer Dinwiddie (SnT) makes sense for both sides. The Mavs could then re-sign THJ, operate over the cap and have the full MLE and BAE to add more parts.

We've talked about him a lot around here. I don't know that particular player very well, but most people seemed adamantly opposed to him. But then again, there have been multiple rumors suggesting Dallas had interest.

The fact that we don't know WHO in Dallas had interest, in light of recent events, kind of bothers me, because it's next to impossible to predict anything moving forward. But, I guess that's true of any team that's changing GM/coach.

I almost guarantee that Cuban is the one interested in Dinwiddie.

oh gosh... You are probably right. It's Bob or Cuban. Why can't we have nice things?!

He's just not a good enough shooter for me at guard.
I'd much rather go after Reggie Jackson if we want a pg. He attacks the rim and hits 3s at an insane clip the last few years and he's straight up looking like a stud in the playoffs. EXACTLY what we need offensively at point guard.

I mean, I don't know that, and maybe it was Donnie who like him. But I'm going to be scared to death until all this gets resolved to our satisfaction, if it ever does.

Unfortunately I think he's played himself above the MLE now.

RE: ROSTER TALK: DAL with $22.7M - $34.4M in capspace | FA starts Aug 2, 5 pm - Mavs2021 - 06-20-2021

The most positive thing about the Porzingis trade is that the Mavs hierarchy seemed to finally understand that you need at least TWO All-Stars (more likely three) to win a championship in the new NBA. Apparently Porzingis is not the 2nd star. If it wasn´t for the injuries, he could possibly be the 3rd star.

Long story short, I hope the new GM centers his whole plan around signing that second star (and third star) in free agency or building up the assets required to trade for him.

And in no version of this players like Spencer Dinwiddie have a place.

Hey let me ask you this: Anyone ask for Spencer Dinwiddie in the Harden trade? Nope. Levert, Allen as young talent and even Taurean Prince was preferred to match salaries. So understand that somebody like Lauri Markkanen, John Collins or Lonzo Ball is not a worse player than Dinwiddie and they are pieces you can trade for KAT in two years.

I´m hopeful the new GM will think the same way, cause that´s basically how they ALL THINK nowadays.

I mean Chris Paul asked to be traded to the Suns, not to the Mavericks. Why is that? We had the better record. We had all the veterans.

It´s because he saw more potential/talent and a better run team in Phoenix.

So I threw this idea out on the chat....

What about signing a guy like Reggie Jackson to an overpriced 2 year deal with a team option?

You overpay to get someone to commit to a team option deal and then have an expiring deal to trade or decline for free agency next year. Allows for alot of flexibility in trades at the deadline and next summer.

There are alot of quality free agents next summer. Not even talking max guys but of course Lavine too. But there would be plenty of opportunity for SNT deals with an expiring deal.. Or you can straight up sign them with cap space if you declined.

Personally, I'd find it pretty hard to get excited by Jackson, regardless of how he fit into any larger plan. It's not that I think he's a bad player, it's just that I don't find him to be a needle mover. If any acquisition is not an instant needle mover, I'd prefer they be YOUNG. I don't think the Mavs are close enough to where they are 1-3 Reggie Jacksons away from competing.
