I do see it this way. Effectively Luka guards 3s and 4s on defense, basically making him our SF/PF, but is the PG on offense. Richardson would be an off ball spot up shooter and secondary playmaker, while Hield would constantly be spotting up in the corners or top the key.

(12-29-2020, 04:48 PM)Scott41theMavs Wrote: But it would also require that Luka become, by this season or next at the absolute latest, a plus defender, because Hield never will be, and there's no prayer of contending with two minus defenders in the starting lineup.

But aren't we at that point already with THJ? THJ is not a plus defender whatsoever. Between them they're a push on all defensive stats. Hield though brings an offensive skill that is akin to adding a Stephen Curry type shooter to your offense. You don't think that's transformative enough to at least tolerate middling defense?

Plus, I think with Richardson, KP, and I assume either Maxi or Dorian, the Mavs will still have 3 plus defenders on the court at all times. And in any case, once you show-out Hield (because I don't see how this kind of shooter doesn't show out playing next to Luka), he can be used as trade bait for whatever you need later down the line.  A perfect buy low sell high candidate if I've ever seen one.

Also with the GSW and Draymond trade rumors, I can see the Warriors making a push for Harden, and Houston rejecting Green.

Mavs could act as a 3rd team to take on Green and facilitate the necessary young pieces like say Terry or Brunson.

HOU: Wiseman+Paschall+Powell+Oubre+ Whatever picks the Warriors have left

GSW: Tucker+Harden

Mavs: Green+2nd round pick for helping facilitate this and stopping Houston from having to accept the Wiggins contract.

I think BKN package (if it is on the table) is extremely better than this. Terry has almost zero value and Brunson is a back up PG. I also don't see why Houston would prefer to take Powell over Green. If Houston wants more development projects GSW has Poole and Smailagic.

All valid critiques. I think Philly or Portland has the best offer of all of them. Heck if Boston wants to replace Brown then that's another stronger package.

This only happens if Harden wants to go to GSW and Houston really likes what they see in Wiseman.

Lauri Markannen
Wendell Carter Jr.

Personally I wouldn' waste time with Nance, Henson, Bjelica, Muscala, Boucher as I don't really see them as improvement. Tucker is sort of ok but is it really worth paying an asset for him? Next offseason perhaps for MLE type of deal?

I have mixed feelings about Gordon. Is he matured enough to become the next Marion?

Love would bring some vet experience and shooting but a giant hole on defense. I mean, if the price would be Powell and Johnson plus a couple of second rounders and there is nothing better on the table, why not. If the price is higher, I am not so sure.

I don't see Markannen fit. He is basically poor mans KP. Questionable defense, questionable shot.

I admit I didn't see Carter Jr. a lot - isn't he a classic C? Can he guard on perimeter? I saw him in preseason and he looked lost in Chicago, just like everyone else there Smile

I.e., "no bigs for omahen."

His comparable from the scouting reports was Horford. Probably not a great perimeter defender, but he's a good post defender and big body to take on those other bigger bodies in the NBA. Great rebounder and outstanding offensive rebounder with a 7'3" wingspan and 9' reach. Checks a lot of boxes we don't have on this team right now.

Not sure Chi is a good team to trust as far as how players are developing there, but true, can't fully write off his stint there.

We have our starting big and plenty of back-ups. I am looking at a more wing option at PF spot.

RE: ROSTER TALK: Trade/FA Ideas (Mar 25 TDL) + Salary Chart - cow - 12-29-2020

Two years ago I loved the idea of Draymond here, but I'm just not sure if he has anything left in the tank. I will say that like Griffin, it feels like a very MBT type of move.

20-21 (30) 22M
21-22 (31) 24M
22-23 (32) 25M
23-24 (33) 27M PO

Salary relief is about all I'd be willing to offer. Luka + KP + JRich + Draymond for the next 4 years?

What does he have in the tank? That’s definitely the question.

Is Rick grooming, or toying with grooming, Johnson as Luka's point-forward backup? Luka's going to handle the ball but his rebounding is crucial right now. When he's on the bench replacing him with a guy who's a small PG hurts on the boards. Johnson's not a Luka-quality ball-handler but he does stop the ball domination by Jalen that stifles the offense, from my viewpoint.

His numbers since 15-16 are mostly troubling.  Rebounding is in a decline,  Points fluctuate but are in a decline.  His steal numbers are consistent.  Blocks are down.  Assists are down but still very good.  3PT % is down, 2PT% is up. Minutes are down but he still played 32-32-31 the last three seasons.

He's an expensive tire to kick and I'm sure GSW is looking for more than cap relief.

If they sent 2M back to us, Powell + THJ works.

Not saying they’d do that deal, necessarily, but if there’s a team out there who could use THJ more than Golden State, I’m missing them.

Wiggins, Oubre and THJ on one team.  What's the opposite of Splash Brothers?  Trash Brothers?

THJ + Powell + Brunson works for Looney + Green

Lol!

My thinking is that THJ is likely to be one of the best shooters getting shopped around this year, and they’ll need shooting more than anyone if they really want to go for it. Then again, if they’re good enough to hope THJ moves the needle, they’re probably not in a place where they’ll decide to move Green.

PS: man oh man, am I glad Oubre didn’t end up here.

I still think the Mavs’ rumored interest in that CP3 deal was about Rubio, but either way, I consider Oubre a bullet dodged!

They should tank again.  You can't win with Wiggns.

My friends and I play a weird form of fantasy basketball (not 9cat) so I'm not much help there.

I watched Johnson more a couple of seasons ago (I think it was a season before Luka was drafted) in Miami. He was playing point forward at that time. It was actualy quite strange because Dragic as a nominal PG was standing in the corner most of the time while Johnson, Winslow and Richardson were trying to create. Johnson had most success and averaged 3,8 assists (Dragic was at 4,8 as team leader). Of course he was much younger and faster Smile

I didn't know anything about him until the Mavs traded for him. He was completely off of my radar. He's taller than I thought and handles the ball better than I thought. Had him pegged as just-a-guy, and he may be, but seeing how Rick is accentuating some of his skills makes me think I've underrated him.

I've really liked some of defense he's played.  Was really impressed when he was matched up against LeBron.
