RE: ROSTER TALK: DAL with $22.7M - $34.4M in capspace | FA starts Aug 2, 5 pm - StepBackJay - 06-01-2021

I think if you add DFS to a KP for JB deal (where JB gets a max extension like CP3 did when he was traded to Houston) then Miami rolls out:

Lowry (FA)
Robinson (resigned)
DFS
Bam
KP

Which is pretty good tho it depends on KP being a difference maker of course.

Mavs would have something like:

Luka
Butler
THJ
Maxi (maybe healthy again)
DP

+ 10+ mil or so impact player with cap space or MLE.

And to be fair the Mavs were all in on Covington last offseason but got trumped by the extra 1st by Portland. (that's an insane price btw)

I do like the idea of signing Otto Porter still on the cheap. He was a pretty good defender at one point and is an efficient shooter.

Pass on OPJ. He hasn't been good since he got paid that huge deal that the Nets forced on the Wizards. Hasn't played a full season since he was traded from the Wiz. He's just 27, so maybe if he gets healthy again ( question mark) he could be a contributor, but that's a dice roll to me.

I would LOVE him next to Luka......but man the free throw shooting between the two might lead to lots of Mavs fan suicides.....

It would be Smart to trade for Marcus Smart.

Why?

I already posed this question in the KP thread but what does Marcus Smart do better/differently than Josh Richardson? I understand he's has a much higher ceiling as a defender than Richardson, but defense isn't the reason Richardson flamed out here.

Same with Delon Wright. Mavs need a guard that can space the floor. Marcus Smart's career splits are 37.6/32.0/77.7. That is horrid shooting.

So first Smart is an actual elite defender. He is a 2-time all NBA defender. J Rich and Delon Wright are guys that have reputations as good defenders but are basically not much better than above average, plus defenders. I do think both of those players are better in more aggressive schemes whereas Mavs have been playing a more conservative drop coverage in recent years.

Smart is elite enough to work in any scheme and even more so if Mavs move into more of a switching scheme which I expect them to do once KP is out the door. Having such a large guard in Doncic enables them to do more switching. Smart is perfect for defending the point of attack, especially smaller guards who give Mavs trouble. That being said he is a multi-positional defender. To me the plan would be to also get a bigger wing to help defender bigger players like Kawhi, especially given Maxi's decline.

Marcus Smart on offense is going to be similar to J Rich. He will do some chucking but I think his toughness is very much needed. The Mavs are pillow soft right now.

I think trading for Smart is one of two dozen ideas Mavs need to chase down but his fit would be excellent here.

Not only is his defense elite, but he is a much better secondary distributor than JRich.  The shooting is a little rough, but he would be a huge help to this team.

The Butler fit with Luka would be interesting.  They are both ball dominant and Butler is not much of a three point shooter.  It would be a little bit like DeRozan offensively.  Defensively he would be perfect.

I wonder if Miami would be interested in an opted in Jrich instead of DFS?  He was at his best there.  It would be ironic if they were traded for each other again.  Then we would hopefully get Theis for the MLE and start Theis/DFS/Butler/Luka/THJ with Powell/Maxi/Green/Brunson bench.

Otherwise we would actually have closer to 15 mil in cap space.  Maybe that is enough to get Holmes (probably get outbid by Charlotte).  Another option would be to trade JRich for a quality rotational player and spend the MLE on another.  We would want to get a defensive center (like a Theis) and another rotational wing (like a McDermott).

This would be a risk due to Luka/Butler chemistry and paying Butler that much for that long, but you would have to pull the trigger.

RE: ROSTER TALK: DAL with $22.7M - $34.4M in capspace | FA starts Aug 2, 5 pm - StepBackJay - 06-02-2021

I think Miami would need the cheaper DFS deal in order to have enough cap space for Lowry. For Heat they could get Lowry for 25 mil for 2-3 years + DFS and KP for Butler instead of paying Butler 50 mil a year when he's 36. I think they would like that a lot. For Mavs it would be a high risk move but that's how you get big name stars. You don't get CP3's or Jimmy Butlers at a discount.

The JRich ship has sailed with Miami. Virtually no chance they give up Butler or Robinson for him.

With all the misses from the front office the last few offseason, it is important not to forget that two of their targets a few summers ago (Patrick Beverly & Derrick Jones) are both out of the playoff rotations on their current teams.   There should be a book written about that week in the future.  Ha.

I think Mavs were more into Danny Green than PatBev and DG has played well.

Not to mention it sounds like Kemba's knees have gone full Chandler Parsons.

What are you saying? You want to give the FO credit that they identified two horrible players, who luckily rejected us. Huh

Guys, just a reminder that the team this FO put together is up 3-2 on the Clippers currently which no one really expected so....fire donnie for trading for luka and fire rick for winning games with a not quite ready for contention roster if you ask me.

Just feels like a healthy conversation to have, ya know?

CP3 will decline option to seek multi year 100 mil contract. .

Feels like a opportunity for the Knicks to overpay and make the Suns make a huge decision...

You can't fire anybody that brought Luka to Dallas. Every other organization is jealous.
