The good thing ab these guys that ppl don't appreciate enough is at this stage of their career they aren't going to complain about minutes. On paper it would be nice to have fifteen 25-28 year olds on your roster in the prime but the reality is that guys in the middle of their career want defined roles and steady minutes. When you grab an older vet they are at the point where they are ready to help you win and those are the guys that will help you in the playoffs. So Batum certainly qualfies.

Would probably require a lot of money and/or a really good post season (realistic shot at a ring next season). He couldn´t have been more vocal about about his prefered destinations and Dallas wasn´t on the list.

If you give rotation minutes to Green, where are the two positions of need you are bringing two players in (value for JRich is one and MLE is the other)? One position of need is PF or big wing, we all agree on this one, I guess. Which is the other? If you bring PG you reduce Brunson minutes. If you bring "new JRich" you reduce Green minutes. We already covered the PF with one guy and we have KP, Powell, WCS at center. I just don't see the need for two "mediocre" MLE level players. I think the aim should be higher, "sacrifying" one of the "mediocre" guys.

A couple of thoughts:

We really do need someone who can distribute the ball.  Brunson plays more like an undersized shooting guard.

I am not ready to anoint Green as a significant role player yet.  He has a lot of work to do to get there and it may not be for at least another year.

If JRich is gone, we basically have Luka/DFS/THJ/Brunson for 3 spots.  If one of the MLE is a PF, then we need another backcourt player (preferably one that can distribute the ball).  Even in that scenario, there should be minutes out there for Green.

If we go the other route, and assume we are keeping THJ, who are you getting with ~15 mil that is worth more than two MLE players?  There are not a lot of guys in that range that fit any of the listed needs.  I am open to ideas.

Ya I don't think Reddick will be back and we really need a wing shooter more than a guard shooter. I think Batum, Gay present cheaper options if you can't get a guy like McDermott who might be too pricey. Mavs need to shore up 2 positions: wing and a ball-moving guard.

My hope is that Dragic could be your ball-moving, scoring guard to and then you get the best discount wing you can get.

Yup I figured. They are not going to be outspent on him. I think he's going to get like 20/yr.

McConnell. Have been mentioning his name every time he was available since he entered the league. Closest thing to prime JJB that you can find in the current NBA but with better defense. RC would love him.

It makes sense.  He is 29, he is becoming better each year.  He fits the team concept and culture.

The context of those statements matter (or at least might matter).

1. Redick felt NO did him wrong.  He felt they had promised him something and most of his narrative was about that expectation not being fulfilled.
2. COVID is/was a big driver of wanting to be at or near his home.  It is an absolute game changer for seeing his kids during the season.  Remove COVID issues and pay more on a one year than others can and I suspect he can be had.

You still have Burke, who has been totally decent as 5th guard. I guess Burke and Green easily take Richardson minutes, which are down to some 20-25 in his bench role.

If we go under the cap, there is always the SnT option. Just as an example - Kleber for Collins, bring back up PF for rMLE or BaE. Batum, Gay and similar options.

If JRich stays I would think about bigger trade. Package him with Kleber or Powell for a player making around 20 mil. Cover the holes with vet min guys. Overall I think we just have too many guys on this MLE level deals and we still lack a reliable good starter. Especially for regular season.

They have been playing great first two games, but I don't really think Luka/KP/THJ is a big three that would put Mavs in a serious contention status.

I think every guy like him would reduce Brunson role, even if just a little bit. Which is fine if you see Brunson as 8 mil per player. If you see him as 6th man (if not starter), it is guys like Burke that cover the holes, imho. I love McConnel, but I have a hard time seeing him here and keeping Brunson.

(05-27-2021, 01:20 PM)StepBackJay Wrote: The real interesting thing is the Lauri news because he would be quite an asset to pick up. Bulls are ready to move on. A J Rich trade gives them the opportunity to get something of value in return. If Mavs are willing to give Lauri market rate or somewhere above that (up to maybe 14 mil yr one) and Lauri wants to sign with the Mavs then it puts the Bulls in a tough spot. They can either let him walk for nothing, keep him and have to move him later or take the deal from the Mavs. This also assumes they value J Rich as a player as well as the contract number he would require.

For the Mavs getting a talent like LM + having MLE and BAE left would be big. It would mean you also are able to keep WCS with him TO. At that point you are just trying to avoid the luxury tax line.

Lauri seems like the kind of guy that Rick could turn into a really useful bench big.  He can hide his defensive limitations (and they are significant) against bench units and unleash his offensive potential.  I'm just not sure I want to pay 14 mil for that.  Seems like we are already paying a lot of money for backup bigs, and not excited about our main off season move to be acquiring another one.  He is a luxury and does not really address our primary needs (defense/play making).

I think it's possible. The shooting % is a problem but he does some nice things out there. His FT % also really dropped off but I think for sure he could be a guy Mavs look at.

Ya I kind of feel the same way so I would only do it if Mavs feel like his talent just rises above need and fit. I do like the thought of LM being able to play the "KP" role on nights where KP site which lets face it, is going to be a fair number of games each year.

One more thought...probably the closest thing to trying to add Crowder last summer.  The need for that guy hasn't gone away.

RE: ROSTER TALK: DAL with $22.7M - $34.4M in capspace | FA starts Aug 2, 5 pm - Mavs2021 - 05-27-2021

So how about this one:

Hield/Bagley III/four 1st round picks to Bulls

Porzingis to Kings
Lavine/Markkanen to Mavs

I can´t help, but think that´s a pretty fair deal, if they apply pressure to the Bulls through their actions, like selling their house or leaking Dallas rumours in the press.  Big Grin

After that the Mavs can comfortably sort through all the FA options without any pressure. Just the simple keep Timmah and offer a veteran PF/C the full MLE would give us:

Doncic/Brunson/Burke
Lavine/THJ/Terry
DFS/Richardson/Green
Kleber/Markkanen/Powell
WCS/Ibaka/VetMin

It could be a bit shaky defensively, but how in the world do you defend a small ball line-up of Doncic, Lavine, THJ, DFS, Kleber for a 4-5 minutes stretch. Advanced math says that´s roughly 200% 3pt shooting. Big Grin

So because Hardaway's cap hold is so large it would make more sense for us to drop his bird rights and just operate under the cap and sign him into space, right?  Or am I missing something there.

RE: ROSTER TALK: DAL with $22.7M - $34.4M in capspace | FA starts Aug 2, 5 pm - Chicagojk - 05-27-2021

I have certain guys who are my favorite role players.   I don't know if this guy fits, shoots well enough for us, or will be available at the price we will have, and he is also restricted.   He may not even be better than Richardson and could eat into the minutes that I hope Green will earn.
With that being said, I want tough guys who will grind and Josh Hart has always been a favorite of mine.

Josh Hart and crazy Bobby Portis (a big who can score when KP misses games and Maxi is out).   That would be a nice under the radar offseason.    Would need to have Josh opt out, and not sure you could get both.

Dragic all day everyday. He's exactly what we're looking for in the backup guard role.

Also Rose, though I feel there is no way NYK will let him leave and will throw massive money to him now.
