It is interesting. Our starting unit is +5 in net rating in first quarters. When Brunson and THJ replace Luka and Maxi (lets call this unit a "Brunson" unit) they are really killing it in the first and second quarter. Our starting unit picks it up big in the third with the "Brunson" unit closely following. In the fourth we actually see a whole bunch of different line-ups, totally inconsistent. Starting unit played only 21 total minutes in the fourth (most of all line-ups) and have a monstrous +30 net rating in that time. I wonder why they are not used more. "Brunson" unit played only total 9 minutes in fourth quarters and have unbelievable -109 net rating. I think it was a short experiment in February and wasn't repeated again. Many different lineups are being used in the last quarter with a general rule - all units consisting THJ are bad, all the rest are good (only looking at units with 7 most used players). A lot of hate is going against Richardson but all 4th quarter units that have JRich but not THJ are excellent.

To sum up - first quarter units for the season are quite consistent when using the starting 5 and unit where Brunson-THJ replace Luka/Maxi (Brunson unit). Things get all over the place in the second quarter with a bunch of different lineups. Similar story repeats in the second half with the difference that first unit is performing much better than in first half and "Brunson" unit is worse. THJ is a disaster in the fourth quarter for the season.

They just have to make playoffs. Fox already signed an extension and the clock started to tick. Haliburton might be a nice player but he is not ready to be a star yet. So KP becomes that budding star to Fox.

The prize I would want back would be Haliburton and a 2021 FRP. The problem is what else as they have to send salaries out to make it work. I don't want Barnes and I don't think Luka-Hield backcourt would work for same reasons Luka-THJ doesn't. He is just not good enough defensively. If he would accept a 6th man role, he would be great, but he made it clear he wants to start. Holmes SnT would be great, but can't be done on draft night. And we can sign him anyway if he wants to come as he is UFA. Bagley would make it work but I am not enthusiastic. But for lack of better ideas I will stay with this. After the move Mavs have a lottery level pick and around 45 mil of cap space. I would lock my PG/SG rotation with Luka, Haliburton, Brunson and Green. Draft best available player on positions SF, PF or C. Sign three legit starters with the cap space. Taking care of starting center and especially wings. Might be enough for all of Holmes, OPJ, Olynik, Theiss.

Luka, Brunson
Haliburton, Green
OPJ, DFS
Olynik, Maxi
Holmes, Theis, +Bagley (would flip him to a rebuilding team for a more established player) + Sac pick somewhere on positions 3-5
This one makes sense too. Kings need to win now. Fox-Hield-Barnes-KP seems like a good core for them. They would also have all their future picks for an all in move.

Mavs get Sac 2021 1st, Haliburton and Bagley. Wright goes go a 3rd team to make the salary matching work

Haliburton isn't getting traded

I think Sac actually has enough room under the salary cap without this move. Perhaps a vet min contract or two

Sure Sacramento can choose a slow and long rebuild. But their playoff drought is very, very, very, very long and current core is far from even making the playoffs, let alone contending. As good a prospect as Haliburton might be he still has a long way to go.

One question occurred to me about any potential KP trade. Dallas seems to have a reputation of not wanting to burn any bridges with agents around the league. So would they really just trade KP anywhere at the risk of pissing him and his agent off? I don’t really think they would. That’s what makes me doubt any deals where KP ends up on a bad team. I think if he gets dealt it’s likely to be to a team like Golden State. Somewhere where we can get a good return that also satisfies KP and his agent.

Good news! KP's agent is KP's brother and I believe KP is his only client.

Kings outmaneuvered the Mavs during the Barnes trade.  Their front office has improved since that deal and ours has remained the same.

Do you think a max offer to John Collins a good idea for the Mavericks?

I dont watch the Hawks much...but that guy does not jump off the screen when I have watched him.

Could be that he is not motivated because he is not happy.

But...supposedly he is efficient around the rim and can shoot the three.   Mavs need shooters.  Mavs need a 4/5 upgrade over Maxi/Powell/WCS.

Again...I have not watched too much of him.  But his defense and ability to rebound need to be good for me to max him.  There is a lot of questions around how good he is on defense which scares me.  A lot of posters with more knowledge than me seem to like him a lot or think he is the best gettable 4/5...I just dont know if he is max worthy.   Maybe Luka turns him into an All-World player....but please dont max him unless he has defense/rebounding checked off.

I think a MAX to JC is a better investment than the current MAX to KP for the Mavs....so yeah, I am IN on JC for the max if that is what it takes.

I think with Pierce out, the odds of ATL letting Collins get away are much worse. Likewise, I think he's much less likely to want to leave. It seems the tensions weren't with Young, with whom he's tight, but with Pierce, who he lobbied the front office hard to remove. They did so, tipping us to the idea that they view Collins as a more important piece than their head coach, and while I doubt they want to pay him the max, it's probably a safe bet that they're more willing than they were before the coaching change. Plus, they're winning now. I think he's a Hawk next year.

I think that's most likely outcome.  I wouldn't say no to John Collins, but the PED suspension still kind of bothers me and I'm not sure he'd want to come to team where he'd have to fight to be the 2nd banana.

*shrug*

11 points(4-9)(0-2 3pts) with 15 rebounds in 25 minutes tonight for Collins

John Collins would be a fantastic fit on the Mavs. Unfortunately I think even with a max offer there is no realistic way to get him

Put it this way, a max offer for Collins is already teetering on a risky signing given that committing to nearly 30 mil a year for a relatively unproven guy. Add on top of the fact the Mavs would need to do a sign and trade with ATL to make them not match that will probably end up costing the Mavs 2 of Maxi/DFS/Brunson and picks.

Just too expensive for a non all-star guy that we hope to get there one day.

The problem is it will take more than that.  There is no reason for the Hawks not to match a max offer and then trade him.  It will take assets and a max in a sign and trade.

Ya we will just have to see. We know JC would be a hard get at this point, especially considering ATL's improvement. We know MBT likes JC and will try to strike a deal. My guess is that it could be a short-lived approach if ATL wants more than the Mavs have or are willing to give. I would also to venture to guess that these discussions will happen before FA opens so that no time is wasted really.
