RE: ROSTER TALK: DAL with $22.7M - $34.4M in capspace this summer - Mavs03 - 04-15-2021

KP and Green for Brogdon and Turner works.  Do we need to add draft capital?  At that point, we wouldn't need to resign J-Rich.  We could go after Collins as well.  I would try to resign THJ as well.  Brunson, THJ and Kleber off the bench is a solid core.

Starting lineup:

Luka
Brogdon
DFS
Collins
Turner

Bench:

Brunson
THJ
MLE
Kleber
Powell

Is that a championship roster?  Not sure.  But's a very deep team.

Brunson has some major skills...he can get to the basket which I like a lot,  decent shot and good handle...seems to rebound decent too.

But...Brogdon is 6'5 with a good handle himself and decent shot.  I also think he would learn a lot from watching Luka in practice.

Maybe Brunson is better offensively...but seems like Brogdon would be less liability of defense.   Maybe Brogdon sucks on defense...I dont know. Maybe Brunson's defense stats arent bad...I dont know.

I would trade Brog for Brunson even tho I love Brunson. Brog is a better player and Brunson is going to need a new contract soon. In Milwaukee Brog had a good defensive reputation, not sure where he stands now. I am guessing he would be an upgrade over Brunson defensively being a bigger stronger guard.

Stay the course team.  Not only does Talen and Jalen sound nice.  THT and THJ sounds intriguing too.  A bear on defense and a bear hug on game winners.

Then don't talk about Brogdon. You aren't getting him for anything less than KP.

I love Brunson - by far my favorite Mav not named Luka - but Brogdon is the one guy I would include him in trade for, in spite of the age and contract differences, because of far better defense, size, and playmaking for others. But KP is outgoing too if you're going to get that, and of course at that point you need a lot more back in return - as in Turner and draft capital.

That's great if THJ is coming back on a bear-hugging, towel-waving contract.

The only thing is Pacers have a pretty high payroll so that would help if they wanted to save on some salary.

I'd love to have him on a ~12 million per year creatively structured contract (flat or descending).

Also why is Josh Richardson not playing in the 4th quarter if he is our big defensive player? Is his defense not any good? What's going on with that?

If J Rich can't help us on a night when the team is playing garbage defense then I don't see the point of bringing him back next year.

My heart hurt last night watching without him on the court in the 4th (I like him as a player and wish he’d produce better for Dallas)...

Overall, reminded of when 3 years ago we were paying Wesley Matthews 17mil a year to play defense and take terribly timed, desperation shots. Richardson, at 11mil, has gone without a training camp, recovered from COVID and is still often times required to guard one of other teams best players while giving more offensively than Matthews did. I’m excited to see what he looks like in the playoffs, I’d still like to see him here next year, maybe an off-season working on his 3pt shot with the team would do him wonders.

He can't score.

Against Memphis in the 3rd he turned the ball over 2 times and took 2 tough shots all in a row if I remember right. Carlisle pulled him after the last turnover and he never saw the court again.

This. It’s Ricks’s pet peeve to limit turnovers. JRich must be sent a message. He wasn’t brought in to be some 20 ppg player, but he must protect the ball and put up an efficient 10-15 every night

If J Rich can't help us on a night when the team is playing garbage defense then I don't see the point of bringing him back next year.

FWIW, I went back and looked at games where he hasn't finished the game (other than blow outs).  He's not been benched for the entire quarter before, but I found four times where he's missed the last half of the 4th since the TDL.

3/27 NO (L):  No Luka that night.  JRich replaced by THJ
4/2 NY (W):   All starters played.   JRich replaced by Brunson
4/5 UTH (W): No KP that night.     JRich/Melli starters replaced by THJ and Brunson
4/7 HOU (L):  No KP that night.     JRich/Melli starters replaced by THJ and Brunson

So, it seems to me Carlisle for the most part has been looking for more "O" when he does this.  We were either missing one of our stars or having a tough time generating offense (NY and Memphis).  Maybe the pursuits of Fournier and N. Powell and the landing of Redick were designed to help here.  We've tended to think of those guys supplementing the bench, but the last time any of those guys contracts came up someone decided to pay all of them more than Miami paid JRich.  In other words, Fournier may have pushed JRich to the bench.

Who knows what this means for the off-season.  Would they prefer two guys filling the off guard role (one with a defensive reputation and one who is a knock down shooter).  Or, can they fill the spot with one guy.  It will also be interesting to see how the various pairings go for the rest of the season.  We know Hard/Rich hasn't been great.  What about Hard/Dick and Rich/Dick?  How might it work if Dick is in, but neither Hard nor Rich?

Sorry, I couldn't help myself.

RE: ROSTER TALK: DAL with $22.7M - $34.4M in capspace this summer - Chicagojk - 04-16-2021

I saw this on reddit that someone brought up Bobby Portis.  He has a 3 million player option this offseason, that he will surely decline.   Here are his numbers the last handful of games:

11 pts 7 rebounds
13 points 7 rebounds
16 points 10 rebounds
10 points 13 rebounds
20 points 14 rebounds
13 points 13 rebounds
18 points 6 rebounds

He is also shooting 47% from three on 2.4 attempts per game.

Most of those numbers are with Giannis out of the lineup, so maybe his minutes and numbers come down when Giannis is playing.

Portis also has a little bit of crazy in him...which the Mavs may need.

I am not sure of his defense, but on the surface wouldn't he be a nice combination with Maxi?    He can fill the PF minutes with Maxi and provide something completely different than Maxi.  Also, if KP is out or in foul trouble, Portis could also provide some scoring that none of other big guys (with the exception of Boban) can do.

THT led a pretty furious rally against the Boston bench last night.  Lakers went on a 24-2 run to bring the game to within 5 and forced Boston to bring Smart, Tatum and Brown back in for the final 1:49.  For the game he was 7/15 for 19 points, 7 assists, 6, boards and 3 steals.  Unfortunately, he missed all three of his 3's.

That is his season high in points.  He's had an 11 and a 10 assist game this year and a seven and two other six rebound games.  This is the fourth time he's had three steals and he's had two games of four steals.  He accomplished all of that in 27 minutes, his 7th highest minutes played game of the season.

All roads, Dan, all roads.

THT just makes too much sense.  The more I think about the ups and downs of KP, I just have a hard time thinking of a better guy to slot into the Luka/KP core.  If KP is the long term future, THT will not ruffle KP's feathers as KP would still be the clear #2 option.  Even better, if the Mavs decide to part ways with KP, you can bring back any player/position without worrying about fit or redundancy.

I think he's shown enough to put you at ease as a secondary ball handler and is very promising from the standpoint of getting teammates involved.  He's got the physical tools and motor to be a top defense player in the league.  The question mark, as you pointed out, is can he improve that 3PT shooting.  His form looks fine to me.  I really think he could be a mini-Pippen.

RE: ROSTER TALK: DAL with $22.7M - $34.4M in capspace this summer - StepBackJay - 04-16-2021

THJ and J Rich have to go. I have seen enough. THJ is a good player and really great dude and teammate. That being said Mavs seen an upgrade at his position. THJ is mostly a shooter, scorer that doesn't do a lot of other things. There are better options than bringing him back.

J Rich is not a good enough offensive or defensive player to bring back. He is an okay player. His defensive ability isn't enough to keep him on the floor when he is turning the ball over. Again there are guys that can play some defense that don't cost as much or you can try to spend all your dollars on a guy with offensive and defensive talent.

Lonzo is a guy that checks a lot of boxes but will be difficult to get (RFA, lots of suitors). I still like the idea of DeRozan as an upgrade over THJ and then you find the best 2-way guard or wing you can find to replace J Rich.
