O'Connor reported five teams had major interest in Collins including Boston, Dallas, Detroit, Minnesota and Sacramento.  His report that the Hawks requested Malik Beasley and a first was shot down by a Minnesota reporter.  His detail regarding Boston was that Bogdanovic was also part of the deal (which makes some sense when you consider Boston did end up with Fournier...a similar player).  Haynes was the one who reported Dallas made an offer involving Maxi.  Both reported a TDL deal was unlikely.

I postulated some time back that Dallas has a history of trading for restricted guys before they hit the market and trying to trade for soon-to-be UFA's so they could have their Bird rights entering the summer.  I would point out that trying to steal a RFA at the TDL is different than putting your summer on hold for the same guy.  We were also associated by various reporters with Drummond, Fournier, Norman Powell Mitchell Robinson Larry Nance Jr., Aaron Gordon and Richaun Holmes.  Our love for and "significant interest" in Collins doesn't appear to be exclusive.

Our old friend Jake Fischer was the one who put Dallas on the list for Norman Powell.  He correctly predicted Lowry would stay and Powell would be traded.  He also had Denver listed first on his list of destinations for Aaron Gordon.  He said "The Mavericks have been the loudest rumored team for Fournier with one potential package being James Johnson and two second round picks".  That is quite believeable since the Boston deal is very similar except the part where Orlando didn't have to take back Johnson's salary.  I go through all of this to point out that Dallas seemed to have interest in "Types" of players rather than any sure-fire desire for any specific one.  My take away from this is we may be at the doorstep of several players when free agency opens.  The first of Powell/Fournier to say yes and some big (maybe Holmes or Theis?) seems more likely than going all in on RFA Collins.

I get what you are saying Dan but I am betting my money on Collins being their target. Fischer also reported that the Mavs were expected to make a significant offer to Collins this summer. So we know that Haynes says Mavs offered Kleber for Collins at the TDL (their biggest offer reported) and that Fischer claims they will make a big offer this summer. I haven't seen anyone else linked this strongly.

I do believe the Mavs made an offer for both Collins and Fournier, with the JJ trade being the fallback. ATL was not impressed with the Mavs offer at that time, Boston beat our offer for Fournier and thus JJ and Melli are Mavericks.

I would pick Collins and THJ.

RFA:  I'd be happy with either, prefer Collins, don't think either are realistic but Ball is more in the realistic realm than Collins.

RFA:  I'd be happy with neither, only interested in THJ but at the favorable contract that could be easily moved.  That means he needs a haircut from his current salary and I'm not sure the market free agent market will bear that fruit.

Now that the board is coming around on Lonzo who I've championed for a long time, it's not to late to get on the THT hype train.  Choo Choo MFFLers.

Collins will not be the reason they suck.  They'd be crazy to move on from him.  If they are worried about their expensive team sucking they could move Bogdan (but he's been playing great lately) or Gallo.

4 game win streak without Collins!

Could it be both Collins and Fournier?  That would certainly be "aggressive".  I think Boston would likely do the Fournier deal below.  Once you have him, you can combine one of THJ/JRich and Maxi for Collins providing them real NBA players to compete with now.  Atlanta reportedly has the hots for Lonzo using a package involving Bogdonovic and Reddish.  If they do that, they could use someone like Richardson.

omahen Wrote: Wrote:You already mentioned this one. I doubt he still has such value at his advanced age and declined production. Performance with Mavs will be crucial for him. Assuming East coast is where he wants to be, this is what - New York, Brooklyn, Philly, Boston and Washington? New York has as much cap space as they want, so no SnT there. Boston is in the tax already, assuming they want to resign Fournier. Washington would be an interesting target as they should kill for a shooter. Philly and Brooklyn could both use a shooter.

Problem is - what do you want from them.

I haven't really expanded my thinking beyond Brooklyn (until now) mainly because of Brooklyn being Redick's preferred destination.  But, between your question and my recollection that Dallas was "the loudest voice" pursuing Fournier, I wonder if there is something to do there.  You pointed out the cap situation in Boston.  They probably aren't giving Fournier four years at $15-$18mm.  Might they be interested in a Redick one year rental while they wait for Nesmith to grow up?

DP is too much of a question mark.  I'd also like a bigger center and someone that provides rim protection and rebounding.

Two of Holmes (more of a PF) or Theis and D12 or McGee would be my ideal.

Some see Hunter as more suitable PF. Atlanta also has a bunch of youngsters that will demand quite a raise in the next two years. Young will get full max. Huerter might get offers up to 15 mil. Than its Hunter and Reddish turn. And they still don't have back up PG.

I think you and Dan have it right as far as what the forum history books should say about the 2021 TDL.

Bostons offer for Fournier was much better than ours and we just didn’t have the ability to match it.

We essentially gave up nothing for Melli/Redick. Johnson hadn’t been playing and we don’t even have a roster spot available for a 2021 2nd rd pick. Plus, if we get crafty we can turn JJ’s bird rights into a 2nd rounder from Brooklyn (and more $ for him).

If we were going to get Collins i think it would’ve happened. The Maxi and picks package or whatever it was I believe was our best offer. Outside of KP, how would we even salary match a max deal for Collins? I don’t think the CBA allows for using double combo SnT(including THj plus others). If we use cap space we lose multiple players not including the picks going to ATL. It makes more sense at this point that we now know what ATL thinks of our guys and their own so we can come to them this summer with an offer for Bogi/Gallo. Two guys we’ve long had interest in as well

A Redick sign and trade is an unlikely scenario and I don´t think any team will offer him more than the BAE anyway. Maybe the Mavs could steal a 2nd round pick from the Nets or 76ers but that´s it. More likely that he just walks away. He probably signs a vet mind deal with the 76ers or Nets.

Speaking of Redick, what's the o/u on how many games he suits up for DAL this year? 1?

Yeah, don´t want to be involved with dumb and dumber (again). Don´t want to pay for shuffling Powell into a kind of similar player. There will somebody like Alex Len or Aaron Baynes left without a dance partner to be my X for the BAE.

That seems complicated. I think the Mavs wanted Fournier bc the price was pretty low. In FA he would be pretty redundant with THJ. I don't know if double S&T's are a thing or if you are assuming J Rich would be opted-in as part of the trade. Either way I sort of doubt that happens.

My thought is that likely the Mavs path to a Collins deal would be a 3-way where Maxi gets sent to a team that values him (and he has value around the league imo) and they send a young asset or pick to the Hawks as part of a S&T with Dallas. Mavs could tack on a future pick as well if they want to be super aggressive. I am not sure Green or any of the other Mavs rooks have enough value for ATL.

ATL might rather have Lonzo than Collins so they attempt to sign him one way or another.

RE: ROSTER TALK: DAL with $22.7M - $34.4M in capspace this summer - HanspardShowerVoice - 04-07-2021

The main thing I'm looking for in the playoffs and how I would approach free agency is Brunson.  This Mavs Five-Out offense is really dependent on having two versatile scoring ball threats on the floor at once.     If Brunson can be one of those guys, it gives the Mavs a lot more flexibility on their approach.     If Brunson can't, then they'll have to put a priority on a high level ball handling scorer.    I'm a Brunson fan and hope he can be the guy.    He's looked great in the regular season, but  I still have reservations about his athletic ability and how he will handle being defended in the playoffs against a really high level athletic defender who is game planning against him.   If Brunson can't get the job done, I wouldn't be surprised if they have to pay for age like Lowry or Conley

This is new to me. I follow Hollinger on The Athletic and Twitter and haven't seen this one. The only mention of Mavs in todays piece:

teams like Dallas and Miami and others could find a way to lure him away. (speaking about CP3 - not saying that this is actually their plan)

Mavs would renounce THJ/J Rich cap holds to free up the space for Collins. Maxi's outgoing salary would also free up space. Mavs have enough cap space to sign Collins to a max RFA deal if they want to but I think that ATL won't let him walk for nothing. That's why I would try to do a trade like the Pacers did with Brog to try to pry him away.
