That seems like a massive overpay even for Dallas. I think 2/50 can get it done. Toronto isn't in the conversation at 25/yr and Miami just traded for Oladipo. I suppose they could sour on him and turn back to Lowry, but they don't have room for both.

I think Miami will be in the running along with some over the cap teams that can do sign and trades. I am not getting my hopes up.

All roads lead to THT.  One very smart, very lucky front office will land him.

I am surprised Lakers didn't trade him. They don't have his bird rights correct? The best they could offer is MLE so I am guessing they are banking on his value not exceeding MLE level dollars?

Long term deals are probably exceptions, but they do happen. CP3 got maxed at 33, Iggy got 3/48 at 33, Redick 2/26.5 at 35. I guess we'll see with Conley. Maybe 3 years is pushing it. I don't think he'll struggle to get 2 though.

CP3 sort of made since him being a special player. Iggy was on the Warriors that just print money so I guess that was understandable. The Reddick deal was weird for sure. Even Danny Green getting 2/30 at 32 after he looked kind of washed the year prior was odd. At any rate I don't see Conley getting more than 2 years at the most, I still think a bigger dollar 1 yr deal is very possible.

I don't think he'll get maxed but I could see a 4yr/60m pretty easily.

If THT played in Minnesota and showed  the same production what offers would he get?
Dude seems way over hyped for production so far.
Would not want to be the team that pays him 64mil over 4 years.

He's 20.  Considering who drafted him and the teams that trade to trade for him at the TDL, I have zero issues with that number.  There is a reason the Lakers didn't want to trade him and a reason they had lots of offers.  He has a motor that Rick will absolutely love, a 6'4" frame with a 7'1" wingspan.  He's got the potential to be an elite defender and has good ball skills.  He needs to improve his shooting his three point shooting and he's no where near a finished product, but the nice thing about a guy like THT is that he compliments what you have in Luka and KP.

I'm not sure where he plays matters.  Everyone loved RoCo in Minny.
If this were a Parsons/Barnes situation, I'd probably stay away but you aren't putting the weight of the franchise on him.

Okay so I think I get it. The Gilbert Arenas rule means that Lakers have a good chance to keep him if they are will to use their MLE which they probably are.

I imagine the game-plan is resign Schroder, do probably full MLE to THT if his breakout year continues and piece together the rest of the roster with vets willing to sign for vet mins.

RE: ROSTER TALK: DAL with $25.7M - $37.3M in capspace this summer - StepBackJay - 03-30-2021

I guess the only issue with the Lakers situation is running into a hard cap but I imagine they could move things around (KCP for example) to make that work if they need to.

You could make it hard for the Lakers to match because of how much money they have committed or at the very least hamstring them for the 3rd and 4th year of the contract. Here is the important part:

Where the Lakers still have an advantage is how that salary counts against their books compared to other teams. If Horton-Tucker signed that offer sheet with another team, the average annual salary of that contract — roughly $20 million — would count against that team’s cap for the duration of the contract. So, not only would the team have to have $20 million in cap space this summer, but they’d have to be okay with having $20 million on their books for the next three summers afterwards.

Comparatively, the Lakers would have the option to have a cap hit of $20 million over four years or they could have the contract count the way it was written, the latter of which would be more likely because of how much salary they already have committed through the 2022-23 season. They also have the luxury of matching whatever offer sheet Horton-Tucker signs.

I had always been on the side of operating over the cap, but that was under the assumption that they trade Johnson for a future tradeable contract or at least someone they would want to re-sign (Fournier).  Now that that ship has sailed, if they operate over the cap their best option is to re-sign THJ and JRich and sign a quality big with the MLE (Holmes, Millsap, Green?).  That is not terribly exciting.  Maybe you make a trade with some combination of Brunson/Powell/WCS/picks to get a starter who can distribution and create for themselves a little bit.  Not sure that is enough assets and/or salary to get done what we would want.

If we go the cap space route, it seems like the options are:

Jrue Holiday (max).  This means no THJ or JRich or MLE and the Bucks probably keep him anyways
Kyle Lowry (2/25).  Prolly can't fit either THJ or JRich (unless he opts in) but would have cap slightly more than MLE
Mike Conley (2/20).  Should be able to keep one of THJ/JRich.  Does Utah let him go?
Demar DeRozan (3/20).  Should be able to keep one of THJ/JRich.  Makes most sense as 6th man.  Does he want to do that?

I'm ignoring restricted as that's a fools game (I hope we don't do something stupid like max Collins).  If we can't land one of these 4, we are probably better off re-signing the guys we currently have and getting what we can with the MLE.

Lowry/Conley/Derozan could all be possible with one of THJ/Richardson re-signing. For instance, a stretch-waive of Powell and moving WCS (or not picking up his option) would allow you to give 25m to a free agent and 16m to THJ or Richardson. Burke is pretty movable too if necessary.

Well right and I know THT looks pretty talented but he would need to go completely nuts for someone to hand him some huge poison pill type deal. Just unlikely to happen and Mavs don't strike me as the team to do that sort of thing.

Powell won't get stretch waived. I do think he can get moved for something...

He can definitely get moved for something with enough salary coming back. But can he be dumped with nothing in return to free up cap? OKC would likely demand a 1st round pick for that service.
