It's hard to see many better options that don't include far-fetched sign and trades or prayers that restricted FA's go unmatched. Re-sign THJ, bring in a roll man like Holmes with the mid-level, and you might actually have a contender.

I'd take Lowry's good friend Derozan if we are going down that path.

Reading Collins’s original gripe about Trae it seems he was upset that one player had such a high usage rate and the green light to shoot from anywhere. If that is the case why would he love to play next to Luka?  Trae is also a very good facilitator and the gripes mentioned are applicable to how Luka is used here too. We know Luka is a more complete offensive player overall due to his size and strength, but reading why Collins was upset in Atl, I am not sure why he would love this situation more.

And then factor in KP.  Someone mentioned (sorry, forgot who) that Collins was mostly upset (insulted) by Atlanta's lowball contract extension.  That seems really simple to overcome if both sides want him for the future.

To me, you get Collins then KP becomes that trade bait to get a point forward /another big guard in here. The trio of KP, Collins, Luka doesn’t seem best suited together.

Paying close to 80mm a year for a guy that hasn't averaged over 10ppg seems like a mistake. I don't know just might be me.

RE: ROSTER TALK: DAL with $25.7M - $37.3M in capspace this summer - luka_skywalker_77 - 03-28-2021

I thought the JC issues stemmed from his contract situation IIRC; that his lack of involvement in the offense influences would adversely affect his contractual negotiations. I could be wrong, but perhaps once he gets that contract, maybe he settles into his situation; but that could be either good or bad.

I think we need to learn from the KP situation. You can blame the Knicks for all their faults over the years, but they genuinely bent over backwards for him and wanted him to stay. There were a lot of red flags in how he handled that situation to force his way out.  It has not got to that point here but you can definitely see some red flags with the guy here too.

The article I posted talks about other folks in the room and how Collins was upset at Young. Young coming out and intentionally not taking many shots in a subsequent game lends credence to the leaks that originated from that meeting. Most players know their market value. Teams are always tampering and in an agent’s ears. If Atl cheats out, Collins knows that there are teams ready to pay him what he wants. So I have strong doubts that it was the money that was mainly bothering him. Plus let us be fair. Collins is not Capela. He is much more offensively talented. You cannot blame him for wanting to be featured more. Not exactly a red flag, but let us not assume that if we get him here and pay him his money he will be happy to not get the ball much. If the Mavs do get him, they and Luka have to know that Collins wants to be featured much more in offensive sets. Not understanding that is not doing their homework.

That's a lot of execution from the MBT.  Maybe you start looking at flipping KP to Detroit for Grant or to Cleveland for a Allen/Nance Jr. *shrug*

RE: ROSTER TALK: DAL with $25.7M - $37.3M in capspace this summer - StepBackJay - 03-28-2021

I just don't see the Collins thing happening. Hawks will want more than what the Mavs can offer unless they want to try to get a multi-team trade going to send picks back and whatnot.

Richardson right now looks like a guy that might opt in. I think his value is around that opt in number and if he does opt-in I don't know that it would be that hard to move him. I also think he could opt out knowing that the MLE is pretty close to his opt-in number so there's not a huge risk of him losing money,

For the Mavs J Rich is not looking like a long-term solution but I do think he has the potential to finish the year looking a lot better than he does now.

I have a feeling Mavs will get some kind of player that's a salary dump like a Buddy Hield or just swap out some role guys around Luka with cap space. THJ seems likely to stay unless he gets a huge offer which I don't expect.

Even an old guy like Mike Conley would be an upgrade over J Rich and you wouldn't necessarily have to commit to him on a long deal.

Mavs also need to dump Powell which I don't think is impossible but they need to try to make him look as good as possible to finish out the season. He gives you nothing on defense from the center position, Mavs need to go in a different direction there.

RE: ROSTER TALK: DAL with $25.7M - $37.3M in capspace this summer - StepBackJay - 03-28-2021

Conley to me is so of a cross btwn what J Rich is supposed to be and Seth Curry. If you could get him on a 1 year deal I think that would be a good idea at SG.

RE: ROSTER TALK: DAL with $25.7M - $37.3M in capspace this summer - StepBackJay - 03-28-2021

The Jazz have too high salary commitments to keep Conley unless he gets way cheaper. They could move off of Ingles but he is still one of the best shooters in the league so I would think they would keep him and let Conley go.

Mavs could try some other options but to me Conley would be one of the more realistic guys to be in that guard spot on a short term deal. Hopefully Josh Green gets better and is the long-term fit at starting SG. Powell needs to get dumped and finding an upgrade at backup PF/C I don't think is too bad. I like Theis and some other guys. THJ would stay as our shooter off the bench.

The other upgrade we need is a 3D wing defender and those are hard to find. You hope that Bey could be a long-term option but that could be a couple of years away. I like Danny Green and Sixers also have a super high payroll so he might be gettable. All of this is easier if the Mavs can dump Powell's contract. Tony Snell is going nuts from 3 on very low volume which is weird. We all like OPJ but he's injured all the time. Interesting to see if Mavs like him. I just want guys that can play some defense.

Incorrect.

Conley will be 34 next season so I'm not terribly interested in him either.

Why do people care so much ab age? How old is LeBron again? Kyle Lowry? Chris Paul? Like if you are good, you are good. Conley has started most games for Utah and they have been rolling over teams in the regular season. You are going to try to get him on a 1 yr no risk deal. Danny Green is another guy I like in that situation. Contending teams keep wanting him and he seems to be in the finals a lot. DG has started most games for another contender in the Sixers that are in first place in the East.

I am sorry but there just aren't a lot of young guys available because of how free agency works and to the extent they are gettable you have to give up a lot of assets. I think Conley, DG are good stop-gap options. Mavs have their 2 stars. It would be nice to get a third one but I don't see who that would be. Jrue Holiday would have been great but that ship has sailed. The next best thing is to just try to get good role guys in the right spots.

I'd rather invest long term, big money into younger players than can become part of our core.  Stop chasing big names, they don't want to come here, especially on one year deals.  We have a lot of holes to fill and we aren't that one piece away from being a true contender.   The  Mavs need to start playing moneyball.

Here would be my shopping list:  THT, Holmes, and one of Howard/McGee.  I also wouldn't mind looking at TJ McConnell.  That gives you youth and some flexibility to trade the likes of DFS and Brunson should need the arise.  Those are names that I think we could have some success recruiting.

I'm not entirely opposed to Derozan. He's not my first choice though as he isn't the shooter or playmaker that Lowry is. I'm not convinced by his defense either.

Why would Conley sign a short term deal with us? If he’s going to sign a deal like that, it would certainly be with a team that appears more poised to be an immediate contender, even if for less money. If the Jazz win it all this year (no chance IMO) maybe then he chases as much money as he can get.

RE: ROSTER TALK: DAL with $25.7M - $37.3M in capspace this summer - ItsGoTime - 03-28-2021

Why is Conley even a suggestion? After he switched teams, it took him a mulligan year to get on track with that new team. There are guys like that in the NBA. I believe JRich to be one of them, only, we're going through the mulligan year with JRich now. After Conley's mulligan year he'll be 36 and we'll be wanting to trade him after that year as well!

I don't understand why people keep suggesting Derozan. He can't shoot so he can't play with Luka off-ball, it's a non-starter.
