I think the team plays better with Luka having high usage....how high? Hard to say what the breaking point is, but I want Luka making the decisions the vast majority of the time.

KP needs to develop a two man game with Luka or he needs to go, that has been my contention for basically this whole season.

RE: ROSTER TALK: DAL with $25.7M - $37.3M in capspace this summer - luka_skywalker_77 - 03-25-2021

Yesterday was one of the few games where they looked like a complete unit and coincidentally, it came when Luka appeared passive/out of it for 3 quarters (at least it seemed). He made much more of an effort to pass the ball and get KP involved and everything clicked from there. Of course it was Minnesota, but it worked well. Luka caught fire later on in the game but its the momentum the team has built up, that they were able to maintain despite his struggles. Taking over late is also what guys like Harden do as well as other PGs like Chris Paul. They know they can get what they  want, but there are many times where they make concerted efforts, despite their own production, to get the team on the same page.

That being said, i dont think its solely on KP to find a workable solution for he and Luka. It's a team effort (and that includes the coaches).

Spurs backed out of the three team deal, forcing the Mavs and Pels to scramble at the last minute to make it work.

I found this interesting, too:

"The Mavericks did explore a trade for Victor Oladipo, per sources, but Houston dealt him to Miami instead. Dallas essentially believed Oladipo couldn’t improve the guard rotation and wouldn’t fit without someone being moved. While Oladipo boasts higher upside than any of the guards not named Luka Doncic, I tend to agree with the assessment. He has struggled since returning from his 2019 injury, and the trio of Josh Richardson, Tim Hardaway Jr. and Jalen Brunson are performing at their most consistent levels since the season began. The team isn’t in a desperate situation and shouldn’t gamble on players it doesn’t believe in."

Of course that once again runs into the risk of losing THJ, while you screw around with the RFAs.

I think Mavs know they have to give up something to get Collins and it appears that what the Mavs have Atlanta doesn't want. Mavs could as you say lock up J Rich and then talk to Collins ab a big deal to try to back Atlanta into a corner. Depending on the J Rich number they could sign Collins to a big offer sheet without having to shed a good player. WCS could be moved. Powell could be trickier.

If Mavs really think Collins is the third core piece they need then they should go very aggressively. I think the starting 5 they'd want to end up with would be Luka, Rich, DFS, Collins, KP. They would be giving up some defense going from Maxi to Collins but gain a lot of offense. I am not sure if it's a great fit enough to have go shed guys like Maxi and possibly Brunson.

For what it´s worth the Rockets fans hated Oladipo. They were still shocked about the return, but their main issue was losing Levert, Allen and Prince, not Oladipo. So I kind of agree. How big is the upgrade with Oladipo breaking into our rotation of Luka, THJ, Richardson and Brunson. And looming above it all his desire to play for Miami. I get it tbh. Redick you can just throw out there for 10 minutes, if you like. Oladipo you have to keep happy. Dude clearly thinks of himself as a star, because of one outstanding season.

To me it was very much worth the risk. What are the odds of the Mavericks even making it out of the first round? What are we trying to do? Mavs aren't considered a contender. I get that the Mavs are on the rise but to me the risk of messing up the guard rotation a little bit is low and not a risk to Mavs missing the playoffs. The cost was super low, sounds like a 2nd round pick would have gotten him (same price for JJ).

If Dipo caught fire all of a sudden Mavs are a really interesting playoff team. I think Dipo would move DFS to the bench. To me this would have been a great move even if it was a short term rental (just like Reddick). It certainly would have raised the Mavs ceiling. I am disappointed the Mavs didn't try.

I think they were worried it would that one of Dipo, J Rich would have to go to the bench and J Rich being demoted would mean they could lose him this offseason on that alone.

You could probably get OPJ and keep one of THJ, J Rich. An issue with OPJ is he has had injuries but you can keep DFS to be a spot starter if OPJ is dinged up.

Assuming THJ is the one that goes you could have a starting lineup of Luka, J Rich, OPJ, Maxi, KP with Brunson and DFS being your 6th and 7th men. As much as I like DFS Luka needs shooters around him and OPJ is just a better offensive player all the way around.

I like OPJ theoretically. But only for the right price! Otherwise we are fine with Dodo. I hope you guys are seeing that he is still improving - each season. Last season he improved his 3 point shooting and this season post covid he improved his defense imo. We'll see if he can keep this up.

Right but you can have both! OPJ I don't think would demand top dollar. I like him as a clear upgrade over DFS. But maybe Mavs are like hey lets just keep THJ, J Rich provided they are on good deals and just shore up the bench. Lots of usable players out there.

RE: ROSTER TALK: DAL with $25.7M - $37.3M in capspace this summer - StepBackJay - 03-25-2021

Danny Green would be a guy that's an easy upgrade if Mavs want to just keep THJ, J Rich. I imagine Donnie would give DG a 1 yr MLE and the Sixers would find someone better for that price.

DG's money would also be filler if Mavs want to do a trade later on. That + WCS (assuming he isn't moved) would give you close to that 15 mil number that is useful at the TDL.

Oh no...TDL 2022...You're not seriously thinking about TDL 2022 just hours after THIS one? Big Grin

Just sayin'. MBT likes to have at least 15 mil in expiring filler every year.

If OPJ is a MLE candidate, I like him more than any other player for the offseason. I mean, if we're talking about THJ possibly getting a raise, I can't understand why OPJ isn't in that same conversation.

RE: ROSTER TALK: DAL with $25.7M - $37.3M in capspace this summer - SamStetz - 03-25-2021

I’m still hopeful that OPJ gets bought out and ends up in Dallas this season, but I know reports are saying as of now he is expecting to stay in Orlando

What I find interesting is that the majority around here seem to be pretty confident in THJ and Richardson both being back next year.

I think THJ won't be back. I think the Mavs are hoping to be able to SNT somewhere possibly in a double SNT for someone. If that could happen, it'll be this offseason when most of your good teams don't have cap space.

If they are both back, I think they may be at one year above market deals. 1+1 maybe.

Brunson and Luka have extensions due next year too.. That's alot of money to go between those 4 guys. And WTF did we draft Josh green for then lol.

I can be talked into the idea that one of them won’t be back. It seems like you assume that Richardson would be the choice to stay. I would be surprised if the Mavericks feel that way today… Maybe by the end of the season.

I agree.   If the Mavs have to choose between the two,  I think Richardson's lack of 3 point shooting is going to be a deal breaker.   When they're trading for 36 year old JJ Redick, it's kinda telling where the front office thinks the hole on the roster skillset is.   I also have a hunch that they would prefer a 2 guard who was a bigger threat to create/distribute off the dribble to take some pressure off of Luka so he could play more off ball and get some easier looks.
