Couple options:
- THJ, DFS, Powell (additional 2s and/or rooks?) for Fournier, AG
- THJ, DFS, JJ (additional 2s and/or rooks?) for Fournier, AG
- THJ, DFS, Powell, JJ (additional 2s and/or rooks?) for Fournier, AG, Aminu

The last idea would bring Aminu back as an incoming contract dump. His contract isn't that bad but he's always injured.

Mavs offseason would be essentially resigning Fournier and probably J Rich + smaller moves to shore up backup big minutes.

I think if the Magic decide to trade Gordon and Fournier they are also going to trade Vuc. Full rebuild around Isaac, Fultz and other young guys. Meaning that they would probably prefer picks and prospects over win now pieces.
They could obviously try to redirect DFS in a 2nd trade and get even more value (OKC model) but that´s not an option with expiring contracts (Johnson, THJ).

If Donnie gets AG in and Dwight out... Might as well trade Josh Green for Lavine while he's at it!

If we can get AG without touching our core of Brunson/THJ/JRich/Maxi/DFS role players that'd be the best move in my mind.

DFS can move to the bench, and can be replaced by the much more versatile offensive talent Gordon. His 3 is not as consistent, but perhaps the Luka Gravity can help.

Luka/Jrich/Gordon/Maxi/KP is a heck of a starting lineup.

No I think Gordon would for sure cost us Brunson. I might still do it but I can’t imagine that we would be able to get him without giving JB.

Doubt it, and ever since being kicked in the Gortats, it seems Orl hasn't been a fan of trading with the Mavs. Not much evidence to prove that, just a hunch.

I dont think people understand how bad/mediocre Aaron Gordon has been for his salary.

So ya if I can keep DFS I am good with sending out our young guys I think. Fournier and AG are both win-now guys.

So to summarize, some trade where we don't even have to give up THJ/DFS but still get AG and Fournier would be amazing. I would give up Brunson and any rookies + Powell, filler. We'd get off of Powell's money plus get 2 win-now guys while only giving up Brunson. As much as I like Brunson I think you could bring in Dragic or somebody now or later as an option there.

Mavs would be 8 deep: Luka, Rich, Fournier, DFS, AG, KP, Maxi, THJ. It's possible tho that THJ needs to be in the deal and gets forwarded onto a contender for a pick that goes back to Orlando. Even if that happens I would be pretty happen with my 7 player playoff rotation now and headed into the future.

I do. Not really a fan. Even his defense hasn´t been as good as some posters think. He is a really good on ball defender against bigger wings like Luka but not a great help/team defender. Below average shooter, average rebounder. I think it is more about him in a different role and system. His rim running and pick and roll finishing numbers are elite but he is rarely used as the focal point of the pick and roll attack.
I also remember that the Magic rejected the RoCo offer in the offseason. Not sure if the Mavs should trade for Gordon but I do know that the Magic want a king´s ransom.

I see AG as an upgrade over DFS. It's all ab expectations. I don't expect him to be a third star. I think Fournier would be the big addition from a scoring standpoint as he is a more reliable third scorer than THJ or J Rich.

AG isn't efficient from 3 but neither is DFS who has regress back to an average 3 point shooter. I just think AG does things better than DFS does in every aspect of the game. Also if I can get AG and not even have to give up DFS that's a big win. Brunson might be the casualty but he is up for a big payday soon so now maybe the time to cash in on his rising value.

Maybe they rejected RoCo bc it was a lateral move and didn't get them any younger. We at least have a couple of young pieces we could throw in.

RE: ROSTER TALK: Mar 25 TDL | DAL has had interest in Aaron Gordon since Nov - F Gump - 03-15-2021

One possibility to consider ...

Aminu has been incredibly bad offensively the entire time in ORL. So bad it makes him close to unplayable. And he's getting 10M this year and next.

It would probably be a lot of value for the Magic for a team to take him off their hands. And perhaps the Mavs wouldn't be afraid of taking him, since he was here before. (But, again, his offense is AWFUL. Beyond awful.)

So maybe there's a framework of a deal that STARTS like this:

Gordon - Aminu
Powell - Johnson

Is that close enough to open the door to negotiate from there? That feels like an opening idea or offer, maybe with a pick included, and then see if ORL is interested enough to talk further.

Maybe it goes nowhere. But maybe Mavs are asked to add DFS or Green or a pick. Maybe in return for that ask, ORL is asked to add something. Maybe Mavs try to get Ross in the deal instead of Aminu. Maybe Burke is added to the mix. Maybe ORL is eager to shuffle the deck in a big way. Maybe the Mavs aren't, but are enticed by the opportunity to add Gordon if the number of bodies is limited. Maybe maybe maybe ..but the key is finding a starting point to work from.

RE: ROSTER TALK: Mar 25 TDL | DAL has had interest in Aaron Gordon since Nov - HanspardShowerVoice - 03-15-2021

Yeah, I think I remember a Zach Lowe podcast where he mentioned that the Magic should have traded Gordon over the summer and now they're probably regretting it because his value around the league has really taken a hit after this season.   Their ownership is tired of 10 years of rebuilding.  They were desperate to make the playoffs, and they needed to give their fanbase some signs of of optimism/hope with Isaac shelved.  They wanted to give Gordon, who had been the face of the franchise (thanks mainly to his Slam Dunk Contest performances, tbh)  once last chance.    I don't see Gordon on their roster next year.   He's a lost cause in their franchise, and they need to just focus on doing what ever it takes to let Isaac thrive without having to adapt his game around the awkward fit with Gordon.

I think that is good thinking. Problem I see, Powell would be totally redundant in Orlando at center behind Vuch, Birch and Bamba. Unless you try to play him at PF. Exchanging Aminu for Powell also doesn't bring cap relief. How about this?:

Johnson+WCS+Green+draft compensation for Gordon+Aminu

AG is bad in Orlando, that is true. But Mavs only have assets to buy low. So, if one thinks Mavs system might fit better to AG skills, than this is certainly an opportunity. Personally I have doubts. I don't really trust super athletic low basketball IQ players. They are useless if their athleticism leaves them for any reason (injuries, age).

I phrased it badly. The offer was 2 1st round picks from the Blazers. Magic rejected it. Rockets traded RoCo.

Powell might actually be a pretty good fit with Vuc.    Vuc is a stretch big on offense, while Powell can be a rim roller.     On defense he allows Vuc to park under the rim and move as little as possible.

Mo Bamba is an absolute zero and is of no consideration.  He is behind Khem Birch.   Khem Birch is better than Aminu and Bamba, and is actually one of their top 5-6 players.  The reluctance to trade for Powell would probably have more to do with overlap with Birch, but Birch's main strengths are offensive rebounding and a mid range shot which aren't what Powell is known for.

Quote:Some clarity about Bamba’s situation finally materialized Tuesday night after the Magic lost to the Toronto Raptors. Coach Steve Clifford inserted Bamba into the game for the first time with 2:37 remaining in the fourth quarter, with the Magic trailing 120-102.
When Clifford was asked by The Athletic what Bamba needs to do to earn more minutes, Clifford provided a clear-cut answer that should clear up any confusion. Clifford said: “As I explained to him, the reality is this: Our best position by far is the five spot. By far. Vooch is playing at an All-Star level. Khem Birch is not just good now; Khem Birch is having a terrific year. So a lot of it is that. (Bamba) is playing behind two guys who (are excelling). Every night, it’s not even close — our best position is the five.”
In other words, Nikola Vucevic and Birch simply are better players right now than Bamba is.

In other words, Nikola Vucevic and Birch simply are better players right now than Bamba is.

That should not be taken as a slight toward Bamba. There’s no shame in sitting on the depth chart behind two players who are having career seasons. Vucevic has emerged as a bona fide contender for an All-Star spot. He’s averaging 22.5 points, 11.2 rebounds and 3.5 assists while also making 43 percent of his 3-pointers. Birch’s offensive-rebounding rate is nearly elite, and he has added a decent mid-range shot to his game, and he also plays with high energy.

“I think Khem, in his role, is one of the best backups in the NBA,” Vucevic said a few weeks ago in response to a question about Birch. “He understands his role. He sticks to it. He never steps out of it. He’s a great roller, great rebounder, great defender. Whatever is asked of him to do, he does it. So it’s very easy for everybody to play with him on the second unit with him out there.”

Vucevic’s comment is instructive because it hints at how other Magic players regard Birch. They love to play alongside Birch in part because he does the team’s dirty work. He scraps for rebounds. He sets bone-crunching screens. And he defends with a motor that never stops. But the players’ respect for Birch goes further than that. They view Birch as someone who has paid his dues and earned his playing time. After going undrafted in 2014 and playing several seasons overseas, Birch has carved out his minutes through hard work and toughness.

I don't like that idea for the Mavs all that much - just don't think there's enough fit of money and minutes. But more importantly, the report specifically mentioned Powell, so if we want to figure what a discussion might look like, we'd better not erase him from going the other way.

The explicit pieces of the offer are Gordon, and Powell. And obviously a lot of blanks to fill in.

Maybe ORL responded the same way you did, and that ended that. In which case, there's nothing to figure out anyhow. But maybe not.

As far as Powell's fit, he has fit alongside Kleber in Dallas. Why couldn't that translate to ORL and playing with Vucevic? I think that has to be the core of the thinking.

Yeah, I'm pretty sure anyone trying to trade for Vuc or AG would have to eat Aminu's $10 million remaining for next year

Aminu
2020   - 7.6 PER, .395 TS%
2021  -  8.2 PER, .443 TS%

He truly is an exceptionally awful NBA player on offense.
