No way. Powell could play like his healthy prime self and it wouldn´t make any difference. Redick is expiring. Powell is under contract for two additional seasons.

I do not concur. 80% of Powell's prime self made a huge difference against Denver, imo.

I won't deny that Powell + a 2nd for expiring Reddick is a dream scenario, value wise, especially if the goal is to get off of Powell's money. You accomplish that and get a usable rental for your trouble. However, I still think Powell might be rounding into form enough to be counted among the three best bigs currently on the roster. And, it's a roster that NEEDS better bigs. This trade makes that situation worse, and adds a guy to the only positional group that doesn't cry out for warm bodies.

Maybe I'd be more into it if there was a separate deal for Aaron Gordon, as an example.

Not for his trade value at the deadline.

Magic were a playoff team with Iwundu last year.   I believe he is the reason they are struggling this year.  Maybe they would be willing to overpay to bring Iwundu home for a playoff run?

Is it weird that I think that Powell is more valuable than Reddick...?

I wouldn't be so gunho about trading him for a 36/37 year old Reddick

RE: ROSTER TALK: Mar 25 TDL | Mavs Talking to ORL about Gordon - jesusshuttlesworth82 - 03-15-2021

Gordon would be an interesting case of what he is vs what he could be on this team.  When I watch him play for the Magic, I am thoroughly unimpressed.  He thinks he is Kobe 4-5 times a game but the Magic havent had a real PG directing the offense in his time there.

Not at all.

It's hard to call, imo, especially knowing that Reddick wants only to play somewhere on the East Coast.

Remember that Reddick is a cap clearing move as well (same idea with George Hill swap). I actually like Powell fine as a rotational big, the problem is his contract.

Magic are my local TV market, and I see a lot of their games.   Yeah, he's frustrating because the ability is off the charts but he's just not a very overall skilled player, and he dominates the ball takes a lot of contested mid range 2s like he is some superstar offensive weapon that an offense is supposed to clear out for and let him go to work.    He also has the ability to be like a premier 2-5 shutdown defender, but he's never embraced that role.   On the other side of the coin, he has played his entire career on a bad franchise where he was the former 4th pick in the draft and never played next to a legit star  .. so maybe he carries the burden of expectations on him to be more than what he ultimately is.

I think the hope is that he's ike Shawn Marion when he was on the Heat and Raptors.    He's not good enough to be a Superstar on his own team,  but if you put him on another team with a legit Superstar and another All Star and convince him to focus on the things he could do at a really high level as a complementary player then he's a huge asset.

If there's a market for Powell though then there is a 3-way possibility that sends out Powell, JJ for Drummond.

Oh, I agree, if the goal is to dump Powell's contract, then this deal is solid gold.

However, just because tons of people HERE hate his contract doesn't mean the team feels that way. They might, because it's a ridiculous deal for a guy who isn't even in the top 8-9 man rotation. But if they can get Saturday night Powell more consistently as time goes on? I don't think his deal is terrible for a 3rd big at all, and if he can regain the form that made him a starter and the main guy playing off of Luka here last season, I think it's a GREAT contract.

It's all about where the Mavs are in that conversation, as well as what they might have in mind to do with the money they'd clear. I definitely don't think that this one move would immediately improve the team. Even if Reddick shoots better here in the second half (he has had a slightly down year, so far) it's not like he'll take minutes from DFS, Richardson, THJ or Brunson. To my mind, he wouldn't even be in the rotation. A version of Powell who's getting faster and stronger (healthier) has the potential to take WCS's role completely, and if he does that, the team improves.

I like him as an upgrade over DFS. I love DFS but he has limitations. I think our offense would be even harder to defense with Gordon able to handle the ball. I also think he's a better defender than DFS.

My offer would be DFS + Powell for Gordon.

I get what you're saying but I don't think when the playoffs roll around Powell with be in the 7 man rotation anyway. If he has a good stretch of games that all of a sudden make him movable I think you have to pull the trigger on it and figure out backup big elsewhere. WCS is frustrating but the drop-off from Powell to WCS isn't so big that you would turn down the opp to get rid of Powell's deal.

If there is an article saying Powell is the centerpiece of an AG trade, then an article saying NO wants Powell for Reddick, that's two very different values. If he has value as the writer of the NO trade suggests, as well as Reddick has very little on court value (read the article, he kinda bags on Reddick), which is what the Mavs are looking for. It stands to reason that the second should be incoming rather than outgoing. For sure we shouldn't be sending one out, although I did say I would do the trade with the second outgoing at the very last moment.

I try not to be dismissive but to me the idea that Powell can net an expiring and a pick is just laughable. Just like the piece about Powell as the center piece of a Gordon trade.  Maybe the salary match with multiple picks and younger players attached.

i want to be excited ab this AG talk but he is linked to a bunch of teams so not enough there yet to feel like Mavs would even be on the short list of teams that could get him.

The trade I saw was Powell and a second for JJ Reddick. Not sure where the big comes into play.

RE: ROSTER TALK: Mar 25 TDL | DAL has had interest in Aaron Gordon since Nov - StepBackJay - 03-15-2021

Man if we could get Fournier and AG that would be huge.

Couple options:
- THJ, DFS, Powell (additional 2s and/or rooks?) for Fournier, AG
- THJ, DFS, JJ (additional 2s and/or rooks?) for Fournier, AG
- THJ, DFS, Powell, JJ (additional 2s and/or rooks?) for Fournier, AG, Aminu

The last idea would bring Aminu back as an incoming contract dump. His contract isn't that bad but he's always injured.

Mavs offseason would be essentially resigning Fournier and probably J Rich + smaller moves to shore up backup big minutes.
