I would throw him in as a third big, basically replacing the minutes WCS and Powell get. If it works, his minutes could increase by playing DFS less at PF with Bamba, KP and Kleber taking all PF/C minutes. If he would develop as it was expected, he would fit very nicely with both KP or Kleber.

But, he is extremely raw, imho. Excellent physical predispositions but not really good at playing basketball. He was also very unfortunate with injuries and serious case of Covid that took both of his NBA summers he could work on improving the game.

Just curious...are you talking about the rule in which teams can only have two designated rookies?

Yes. Some were expressing concerns that a trade for Collins might pose a contractual snag (it would not), and I responded to that (and quoted what I was responding to). But the question raised misstated the rule, which is fairly narrow.

The question raised applies to rookie extensions. That eliminates both KP and Collins.

Also it doesn't have anything to do with the money. It pertains to the contract length of the extension.

Bamba is a bust/project at this point who will probably get shuffled around for a few years until maybe he gets things figured out.

Tim, who was low key click baiting got irritated with NBA Central for full on click baiting, using his name.  Now Cuban hates him again. Smile

I don't think he was click baiting and Tim is a guy who isn't just going to repeat stuff he has read from others. I am sure here is hearing this from actual execs. Doesn't mean KP *is* available just means that a Mavs beat writer has heard from execs that they think KP is available.

Surely not another Thabeet?

Bamba moves like Hakeem compared to Thabeet, but he seems to have chronic back issues and other probably other related injuries. So I believe in the talent and especially the designated role in our system, plus he should be pretty cheap factoring in minutes, contract length and roster make-up of the Magic. We should be targeting these kind of players a lot more often in general. We are really awful taking advantage of such leverage situations and making forward projections about younger players. I am no Jerry West, but it was so obvious Zubac and Harrell were much better value than VAJ, heck they were better players immediately, too.

So....you're sayin' there's a chance? (with a nod to J. Carey)

Orlando is my locally televised team.   The big issue with Bamba is just low energy/effort on consistent basis.     They have 1  All Star, who plays his position.  They try to give Bamba minutes at the 4 to give him time, but it just exposes all of his weaknesses on defense .. bad lateral quickness, bad court awareness, rudimentary concepts of team defense, and poor effort on closing out  (especially if he has to make multiple efforts).  He's not the type of self starter who is going to really work hard to improve himself in the gym or with conditioning when he's not getting minutes, the way that Marcin Gortat did in Orlando coming from a low level German League when he was stuck behind D12 and Adonal Foyle and just built himself into an NBA player out of sheer determination and strength of will.  He's stuck behind not only Vuc, but also behind Khem Birch because Orlando wants to get into the playoffs and Khem Birch is just honestly better at basketball that Bamba right now.    Bamba really just needs to go to a team like OKC who doesn't care at all about winning games and gets minutes while being badly exposed.

Gallo is the name to watch. I think he would be a perfect fit here. I would give up a rookie asset + expiring to get him. His scoring would be big.

I agree.  Gallo seems like a Mavs type stealth move.   I didn't like how he was moving when we played Atlanta, but that may make his market lower.    I would dislike giving up a rookie but I am guessing it would take at least that.

I was hoping that just having ATL get off that contract that you could get him for nothing.  But ATL may have better trade options out there.

I think I'd rather invest any potential "Gallo minutes" in Maxi. There's more everything from Maxi - better shooting, better defense, better rebounding, better health, better future upside. And there would be no way of justifying that much money (20M per year) to Gallo for whatever minutes might be left over.

Bamba is probably DSJr level at this point.  Reclamation project for a rebuilding team.  He wouldn't see the floor here.

I think if you want Collins, you'd have to part with Jalen.

Dallas trades Josh Green, Tyrell Terry, James Johnson, 2025 1st round pick (protected)

Atlanta trades John Collins and Danilo Gallinari

Dallas trades 2 young assets in Green and Terry, draft compensation and an expiring contract in Johnson

Atlanta sheds Gallinari's contract off their book.  Okongwu steps in and takes Collins spot

Dallas roster:

Starters:

Luka
J-Rich
DFS
Collins
KP

Bench:

Brunson
Burke
THJ
Gallinari
Kleber

Powell and WCS rounding out the bench.

We're stuck with Gallinari for 2 more years at a hefty price tag.  Cuban would have to go into luxury tax to keep the team together, but I think that's a very deep and talented roster.

I'd make that trade for sure. Unfortunately I think ATL wants a lot more for Collins.

What do you guys think of this trade?

https://tradenba.com/trades/cdr5NCpz5  Mavs also send 2 2nd rounders and one of their last remaining FRP.

I really don't think SAS does this type of trade, but if you're the Mavs you essentially get LMA for the bench, and DeRozan to replace JRich in the starting lineup.

Doesn't fix the spacing but DeRozan is elite at creating his shot so it wouldn't really matter.

We can have both and Mavs need more shooting. I think if you can add Gallo without giving up a top 7 guy then you have a pretty strong 8 to go to war with.

OK, I found it - a conditional 2025 2nd round pick.  If Atl wants to get out of Gallo's contract to max out Collins - Mavs should offer JJ and a 2025 2nd RP.

I think them taking on a bad contract, that's better, but still bad is also commensurate.

Powell+Johnson+2025 2nd RP protected 31-40 for Gallo+Snell seems fair.
