I don't think he needs or wants more. By next season he might be a 30 mpg player and closer so I don't see why he wouldn't be just fine with that.

Washington is mediocre despite having two stars. Westbrook who ppl say is over the hill is averaging a 20 point triple double. Beal is a 33 ppg scorer.

Does Washington want to have to blow up a team with 2 stars on it or would they take the chance to sell off their "future" to get a third star? I would argue the latter.

I think Mavs could easily get a Jrue-like package with picks, pick swaps, Bertans and whoever the best young player the Wiz have (Rui?). Washington would have their big 3, all under contract for multiple seasons. And if it doesn't work they would sell them off and start over in a year or two.

For the Mavs you would have a full war chest of assets and cap space that you can use at the appropriate time to land a star. In the meantime you would still have a very good team. The way KP has been playing I don't think it hurts the Mavs playoff chances if he was traded for this type of package mid-season. This type of trade would also be available in the offseason if Mavs wanted to wait until then.

Tell them they can keep Bertans and his bloated salary.

KP and Iwundu for Lopez, Bryant, Rui, Deni, Gill and picks for the war chest.  Could add a Burke for Ish Smith in there as well if Wiz think he'd be a nice microwave for a punchless bench.

Finish the season out with starting group of Lopez/WCS/Powell, Maxi, DFS, JRich, Luka and a bench of Lopez/WCS/Powell, Rui, Deni, THJ, JB.  Go into the offseason with option for cap space or some young talent and picks to go chase the right fits. Also get Bryant back to plug in at Center.

Wiz say screw it and role with KP, Bertans, Brown/Bonga/Iwundu, Beal, Westbrook and a bench of Neto, Matthews, Brown/Bonga/Iwundu, Wagner and Len.

Not sure how much worse the Mavs are the rest of this year with all dinosaurs at center but a little bench boost from Rui and Deni and ability to run some interesting combos out there based on matchups.  Would still have the JJ expiring to maybe improve a roster spot this year.

It's fun messing around on the trade machine making deals work that will never happen...who needs actual trades when you can just make up whatever the hell you want on your own.

Edit:  Roster spots be damned!  Forgot that tiny little detail....I'm now fired as the GM of the fake Mavericks

I like Bertans, he's a pure shooter which Mavs need and he is a shooter at the stretch 4 position which Rick likes. I don't think his salary is bad at all really.

Trade one Latvian for another. I look at the Bucks/Pels trade as the template for what this would look like.

Brunson is quickly becoming a player who will be difficult to get fair value in return...

His current price tag is so low that he can't bring much in trade alone. And at the same time he doesn't have enough value to overcome a bad contract - say Powell, without taking back a bad contract.
But IF you matched Brunson and Johnson it would have to be for a high quality player - or 2.

RE: ROSTER TALK: Mar 25 TDL | Marc Spears: Mavs are shopping KP - StepBackJay - 03-02-2021

Ya'll need to stop trying to trade JB, he is a keeper.

RE: ROSTER TALK: Mar 25 TDL | Marc Spears: Mavs are shopping KP - Mavs03 - 03-02-2021

KP to Indiana for Turner and Warren (Warren is currently hurt but is apparently coming back soon)

Warren will be a free agent in 2022, but when healthy, he's a really good player

Luka
J-Rich
DFS
Kleber
Turner

Brunson
Burke
THJ
Powell
WCS

If Warren can come back this year, he replaces DFS in the starting lineup.  I prefer Wiseman from Golden State. Although he's raw, I think he can turn into a borderline all-star player.

Main words in these sentences are "I" and "think". We can't know any of this whatsoever, the FO and coaching staff might.

I'm kinda at the point that if we trade KP, I want Turner and either Collins or Gordon back. WCJ might do in place of Turner too. I don't care about getting picks back if that is the haul.

I can guess

Sure, we all can, and I'd say the probability of him being ok with his role is high that he is ok with it. We just can't know that for sure. That's why I said if he's not ok with it.

Mavs have his rights so they have more say than he does and it's not like he's not getting PT.

RE: ROSTER TALK: Mar 25 TDL | Marc Spears: Mavs are shopping KP - ItsGoTime - 03-02-2021

The next question to answer is how much is he gonna be paid and is that as much as we are willing to pay him for the role he will play? That isn't anything we can answer either.

I don't know what his rights have to do with his role, cause when he becomes a FA, that's when we'll know for sure what he thinks and what the FO thinks of him too.

He will be restricted.  We can match anything.  I doubt somebody is going to go crazy for him and we have bird rights.  Not much chance we lose him if we want to keep him.  That is part of his current value.

Nope. Not if he plays out his contract, then he is an UFA.

I believe @"DanSchwartzgan" or another cap guru has said if we decline the next season he’ll be RFA then like what happened with Chandler Parsons, but will Mavs be ok losing that extra cheap year?

Oh crap.  I guess he is not restricted due to being second round.  That sucks.

Right so I believe that is the situation which means the Mavs will go the RFA route bc it would be crazy not to.

(03-02-2021, 04:58 PM)StepBackJay Wrote: Right so I believe that is the situation which means the Mavs will go the RFA route bc it would be crazy not to.

So I’m working with the assumption that cap space will not be relevant the summer of ‘22 because:

1. The Mavs will still have KP or have traded him for a useful player(s), i.e. not for cap space
2. THJ and/or Richardson will have been re-signed, or they’ll have replaced them this summer (and not with 1 year deals)
3. Luka will have a large cap hold anyway.

Maybe none #1 or #2 is off and cap space could be in play, but I think things would have gone horribly wrong if that’s the case.

So since we don’t have to worry about cap space, the only reason I can think of to keep JB on the smaller contract is to make it easier to avoid luxury tax for an additional season. Once Luka’s extension kicks in, that’s going to be much harder to do.

It’s not my money and my biggest fear with Brunson has been that he’ll become a wasted asset by reaching UFA and leaving, and that was before he started coming on so strong recently. Earlier years Cuban with the old CBA wouldn’t sweat it, these days I just don’t know.

RE: ROSTER TALK: Mar 25 TDL | Marc Spears: Mavs are shopping KP - StepBackJay - 03-02-2021

I can't imagine any scenario where Mavs let Brunson get to UFA. None.
