If they decide to trade him the best way to maximize KPs trade value would be in exchange for a contract that is just as bad or even worse. If KP still has some value try to get some young talent. Some kind of compensation for the lost picks.

Wiggins + Wiseman + Mannion
Griffin + Bey + Stewart
Love + Okoro + pick

Fixed

I don't think Mavs would take back Wiggins in any scenario unless that Minny pick is attached. I think the cap space in addition to Wiseman would be the prize they would be getting for moving KP. Mavs would need to tell Luka that help is on the way soon with all that cap space.

The people who can't or won't wrap their heads around moving him are clinging to an idea that the Mavs can be or should be good SOON. They aren't good, and if waiting on KP to save them is the plan, I don't think they will be good in 4 years, even.

Instead of trying to use him to BUY something that fits the roster better while staying on this unrealistic timeline, my opinion is that they should SELL him for literally anything they can, be it young players (to whatever level he is worth) or picks (of whatever value he can bring). This idea that they'll only remove this absolute anchor from their roster if doing so nets Bradley Beal, LaVine or prime Michael Jordan is folly. Each day that passes makes the mistake bigger and the problem more glaring.

This seems like an extreme take.  The second best player has been out half the time and trying to play himself back in shape when he is out there.  The team got devastated by Covid, more so than any other team (except possibly Miami), and they have played one of the toughest schedules to date.  It's been a very disappointing start to the season, but they are basically 500, are finally getting healthy, and have one of the easiest schedules going forward.

KP was a good defender/rebounder all last year, and his offense took off in the second half when they started playing 5 out.  I'm going to trust that sample size a lot more than the much smaller one of this year when he is trying to play himself into game shape.  If he is still playing like total shit (or can't get back on the court) at the end of the season, then I will start to worry.

To trade KP now makes no sense.  Unless he is out for most or all of the rest of the season (he apparently will be back next game) he will very likely have more value in the summer than he does now.  Lets let the rest of the season play out and see where we are at then.

If I could get my head to buy in on the sentence above, the rest of your post would basically be my opinion. I can't, so it isn't. I hope you're right and I'm wrong.

Agree. We simply don´t know if his trade value has reached rock bottom. It obviously can increase but if he misses even more games or continues to struggle it is more likely that it will tank even more.

RE: ROSTER TALK: Mar 25 TDL | WAS among teams monitoring KP situation - StepBackJay - 02-26-2021

I think KL is overreacting on KP's value. KP isn't like Wes Matthews or anything. He is still a good player with upside. I have a feeling he might be super high maintenance behind the scenes. We just don't know what that situation is like. There's a lot of factors at play here but we will just need to see how it plays out. I could see him getting traded or not traded. I do hope that trade talk this lights a fire in him.

Also I am ab 90% sure KP is playing tomorrow so all this theatre ab him being super injury prone bc he had a sore back for a week will have also been overblown.

He missed 3 games in the span of a week. Said his back felt good yesterday but the coaches wanted him to practice. People act like a sore back is the worst thing ever, it's not a big deal.

I feel like our coaching staff/medical staff is freaking jerking KP around. The lack of communication here really shows.

Just a weird disconnect between the players and the staff. Is it stemming from RC? Or is this because of the players attitude? A bit of both?

RC should be on the hot seat.

No. KP is the worst. He's Rik Smits with no legs. Trade him now.

This is far from the first time that KP's comments have seemed to

1) be an attempt to communicate through the media

2) he seems to also imply that he is not being communicated with in the way he wants.

Like I have said elsewhere, I think the Luka+KP+RC dynamic is not working, but I have no idea exactly what/who is to blame. It's weird.

Killer, it would take a lot of stones to trade KP now, unless (1) he is demanding out, or (2) the medical staff has advised them to give up on his regaining his mobility and ability to stay healthy. Do you really think the Mavs are at the point of trading him?

I of course don't have any knowledge based on inside info, but it seems to me that, absent one of the two conditions above, they are going to try everything they can to make it work, come hell or high water. I don't think their having conversations with other teams about what he might be worth particularly changes that, unless they are having specific advanced discussions about an actual live deal.

I totally hear where you're coming from. But it would be a huge thing to do, a giant public admission of failure at a pretty early point, and I don't know that they have it in them, tbh.

That's the thing, I've gotten sort of...icy..(?) vibes between Luka and RC on more than one occasion. Especially when end of game situations are blown.

Like you said as well, this isn't the first time KP has said stuff along the same lines.

I'm leaning toward RC being the problem just given his past history of being a hardass. Dude also does not seem the same this year coaching wise.

After the Pacers finished the 2006–07 season with a 35–47 record (missing the playoffs for the first time since 1997), Bird fired Carlisle as head coach. Carlisle understood the decision, saying that the Pacers needed "a new voice."

I mean, could be a familiar tune here.

I don't, either. In this case, I'm not predicting what they will do, just articulating what I believe they should do.

To me, it's time to confront the brutal facts. Others aren't there yet, and I can certainly understand that. It's a fairly huge bummer to wrap your head around, tbh.

Why? His team is having a worse season than the Mavericks, and with WAY more talent in a weaker conference.

I disagree, the loss of Hayward and Walker being a shell of himself is a big reason as to why. They have also been without Marcus Smart and have relatively no depth.

In my opinion Boston regressed and their issues are not because of Stephens.
