RE: OFFSEASON: Mavs Trade & Free Agency (Oct 18?) + Salary Chart - cow - 09-02-2020 I'd argue Wrigth wasn't really here at the beginning of this season. Trade Wright when you need cap space but not before. The longer you hold onto him, the less expensive it will become to get rid of him. He's going to sit on the bench to the same extent that Rondo would have if there were another year on his deal. Damn hard to see how that's going to raise his trade value. Plan Powder 2020 should be called Plan Just Go Away, Luka. Arguably the stupidest conceivable move available to any of the league's 30 front offices this offseason, short of the Mavs trading Luka for a beer. Luka is a win-now player who won't tolerate the mortgaging of any seasons. By far the most important thing for the Mavs to learn from the 2019 offseason - if you want a top FA to sign with you, then you tamper, absolute end of story, because otherwise he'll be off the board at 12:01 am EST. I also prefer win now than wait for 2021 pipedream. I am really intrigued by 2020 cap space. Fred VanVleet and Grant are great fits for Dallas imho. Assuming guys are up for it, I would use our picks to dump Jackson, Powell and Wright (WCS opts out), which gives us some 27 mil of cap space. Luka, FVV, THJ, Grant, KP would be great starting five with Brunson, Curry, DFS, Kleber and Bobi as bench. Fill the rest with vet min contracts This is like trading Powell, Wright, Jackson+#18+#31 for FVV and Grant. I think everyone would be up for this kind of trade. RE: OFFSEASON: Mavs Trade & Free Agency (Oct 18?) + Salary Chart - StepBackJay - 09-02-2020 One thing y'all forget about is that Mavs won't have anything but future worthless 2nds after draft night. Furthermore, Mavs won't have their own pick in 2021 and I don't think they can trade their 2022 pick. Remember TJ Warren who was a very good shooter, got dumped for a 32 last year (he obv greatly improved this year as well). Wright has is in worse shape in terms of a player and negative asset even if his contract is smaller than TJ Warren's was at the time. Mavs could always trade this years picks for another team's future picks so as to keep those in their war-chest should they need them later, I think that does happen some times. I would not underestimate the Mavs willingness to shed future cap space. And Wright is not totally useless, I think he just doesn't fit Mavs system (09-02-2020, 03:39 PM)StepBackJay Wrote: Remember TJ Warren You keep bringing this example up, but it is totally uncomparable. Warren had 3 years left on his deal, not one. This and I would add that you reach an agreement with the top FA before you clear capspace. That´s what Miami did last summer. That´s what GS did when they signed Durant. Capspace alone isn´t doing anything and the last few free agencies showed us that teams can always create a max slot if they need to. I don't think anyone would mind Mavs spend the 2025 and 2027 FRP to clear cap space if Giannis announces he will sign with Mavs. On the other hand, we might be pretty pissed of if Mavs go plan powder and end up with Bobby Portis, Snell and McDermott as "prize" signings. RE: OFFSEASON: Mavs Trade & Free Agency (Oct 18?) + Salary Chart - cow - 09-02-2020 At least Bobby Portis would clock Morris when he line steps. FA is after draft night. Mavs won't have any picks when FA starts. Honestly I think 50/50 Wright gets traded draft night, with or without a pick. If not draft night then in the summer. I think his value is super low. Not horrible but what you are getting back is probably a player on a 1 yr deal which is their version of a player they don't want. This is the thing. Being out on Plan Powder and choosing to sit out 2021 free agency are two radically different choices. The only way the Mavs put themselves out of 2021 free agency and a shot at Giannis is if they take on or sign albatross (or even binarily overpaid) contracts. They can improve the team in 2020 while trading for and signing appropriately paid players, hopefully while clearing away one or two of the overpays we currently have, and still be bigtime players in 2021 even if they're technically over the cap. The MBT would have to be dumber than a box of rocks not to see that. If they were insistent on that course of action, they would still be stupid not to have the expirer be someone who can help the Mavs in the meantime. RE: OFFSEASON: Mavs Trade & Free Agency (Oct 18?) + Salary Chart - StepBackJay - 09-02-2020 I am sure the Mavs would like to get whatever the best that they can get, preferably a player that is an upgrade over Wright. If all else fails it's my opinion that would trade Wright for a player on a 1 yr deal that could be a rotation player or someone that simply gets bought out and replaced by a vet min player. One thought was like Gorgui Dieng for Wright + Jackson. Wright played well for the Grizz and Dieng is a 16 mpg rotation player. He would probably be useful here as an extra big. Mavs might not have to give up a pick in that scenario and they would also free up a roster spot. Agree. Sign him, and the Dallas trends of settling for damaged goods continues (ie Matthews, Parsons). To his credit, his game improved so much with the Pacers, but with a recovered torn quad, I rather steer clear than to be surprised that another injury happens. Our roster already contains palyers with nagging or grave injure history: KP - ACL and now meniscus tear Powell - Rupture Achilles THJ - Left leg tibia Seth - Left knee and tibia Do you want to add another name to that list??? Mavs aren't known to build draft players since this teams identity with Rick believes more in IQ (experience) than athleticism (youth), however with your star player Luka being 21, you better trade for young, up and coming players than someone on the verge or already down his peak playing days. [/quote] So, Giannis will choose Miami for us because? 32 years old Butler? Bam? Especially if the knock him out this year?Nah, doubt it. I have been against plan powder since its start in 2011, saying super stars has better options. But 2021 is the year I say it is warranted to consider it. Obviously, we need to look at cap situation first (09-02-2020, 03:20 PM)Scott41theMavs Wrote:(09-02-2020, 03:04 PM)cow Wrote: I'd argue Wrigth wasn't really here at the beginning of this season. Sadly for Luka, he is under our control until 2025 at earliest And this is why any win now over win in 2023-2026 is a disaster. You compete for WCF now, and then fail to win a ring in that timeline, he leaves once he has the chance. You take a first round exit in 2021, but make him win rings in that timeline, he stays. The last couple are a little bit unfair. I mean most NBA players have had some kind of injury. If we are going to cross off names of any player that has missed time for any kind of injury we are going to have a pretty short list. Until last year LeBron is the only player I can think of that was seemingly always available. You are basically making the same case MBT will make to themselves for plan powder 2021 unless and until he signs that Supermax. I think Miami is an attractive destination. Dallas isn't competing against Miami, they would be competing against the field in a situation where the biggest FA to hit the market since KD is suddenly available to any team that can clear cap space. Who thought Jimmy Butler was going to wind up on the Heat last year? They had no cap space and yet got him. GSW got Deangelo Williams despite being hopelessly over the cap. Crap happens and you would be competing against at least half the league including many teams that could compete from a talent standpoint. I am resigned to the fact that Plan Powder reigns forever so if we should get to that point I will try to talk myself into him coming here. I would rather Giannis put us all out of our misery and sign the Supermax. As a team that wants to keep their own Superstar down the line when they become a UFA we should hope other homegrown stars stay with their own team. They are really good. They have been on my radar sine early in the season when they were the big surprise team of the East. When the Mavs played them they were freaking tough. Now both strategies have mostly failed until the Kristaps trade which is the most Nuclear Winter one-sided trade of all time. Donnie absolutely killed the Knicks and we may never see a trade like that again. To get a star player still in his early-mid twenties for almost nothing is just amazing. So knowing the MBT is likely to again roll out PP + NW, who are some targets? Remember if THJ opts in you will have ab 28 mil in expiring contracts to start the offseason before any other moves are made. Teams with big salaries include GSW, 76ers, Celtics, Nets, Bucks. The 76ers are a team that stand out as they are in a weird place with their salaries. You have a bunch of overpaid players across the league: CP3, Griffin, Wall, Love, Westbrook, Harris, Middleton, Wiggins and so on. If Giannis signs his Supermax, 2021 doesn't look that appealing assuming you don't believe LeBron or Paul George are serious targets. Furthermore if you did land a Jrue Holiday you are likely having to give him a 4 year deal at huge money. Middleton is one to keep an eye on bc I wonder how interested the Bucks will be in his deal if Giannis leaves in 2021. Otherwise I wonder if like Griffin or Love would make any sense should the team on the other side simply want to dump their deal? Griffin hasn't been my favorite target but if Griffin is your 3rd best player and you are only committed to 2 years that's not bad. What if you could get Griffin for mostly expiring assets + a pick or two? It's something to think ab at least. Hield is brought up a lot and could be a target depending on what the Kings want to do. If the Kings feel like THJ is a comparable talent without the long contract, they might take THJ + filler and picks for Hield. I would not be against that either. |
