Wright + Jackson would allow us to match up to $19M. I doubt that Toronto has much interest in taking on those two though, especially since they are chasing Giannis. Maybe there is more interest in Wright if FVV walks. Otherwise you are looking at finding a third team or giving up a more valuable player like Maxi or Curry, which I would oppose. RE: OFFSEASON: Mavs Trade & FA (Nov 20?) + Salary Chart | $109.1M cap - DanSchwartzgan - 11-08-2020 (11-08-2020, 06:09 PM)JamesConway Wrote: https://twitter.com/all_things_mavs/status/1325572968496451584?s=21 Here’s the question this raises. Serge’s best position is center. Same with half of our team (KP, Powell, Maxi, WCS, Boban). He has hardly played next to Gasol at all. I get that he used to be a PF, but the league has changed since then There is already talk KP won’t be ready by 12/22 and we don’t know exactly where things stand with Powell or with the WCS PO. So, is this, if true, insurance? Or, filling a slot after someone is traded. RE: OFFSEASON: Mavs Trade & FA (Nov 20?) + Salary Chart | $109.1M cap - omahen - 11-08-2020 Ibaka would be great. What I have a problem with: 1. I don't understand why he would take MLE from Mavs, he will most likely get a big one year offer from Toronto 2. If his salary would be higher - why would Mavs invest even more money to PF/C position with Kleber, Powell and KP already on decent/high contracts. 3. Is it really worth paying assets to Toronto for a SnT? We would be looking at losing good and probably expiring players and picks. I just don't see any possibility of this to happen, so I think it is just another thing of Mavs checking possibilities. But if he leaves, he would only do so to have a chance at a championship—teams like the Celtics, the Clippers, the Heat, the Mavericks and the Trail Blazers are among those interested in Ibaka. The Lakers, though, would offer him the best chance at another ring." RE: OFFSEASON: Mavs Trade & FA (Nov 20?) + Salary Chart | $109.1M cap - ClutchDirk - 11-09-2020 (11-08-2020, 11:02 PM)Omega_Supreme Wrote: I am out on Hayward..not sure why you guys think he make us better, I just do not see it. We need defenders and toughness. While we do need defense we also need someone who can help our offense at the end of the game since there were games last year were we had 2 makes in the final 5 minutes... The bench gave the Mavs a small lead early in the fourth, and the team trailed for the last time (until the last minute of play) at the 7:50 mark. Alas, the last five minutes loomed. At 4:40, a Hardaway layup would be the Mavericks' last made basket. At 3:14, a pair of split free throws by Luka gave our men a quarter-high lead of 5 points. Then -- 3:04 Sabonis cutting layup over KP. Mavs up 3. 2:45 Luka jacks a contested three and misses, when THJ is open to his left. 2:33 Oladipo hits a midrange pull up. Mavs up 1. 2:11 Tim gets stuck in traffic at the end of the shot clock and heaves a cross-court pass to Maxi in the corner. Maxi misses the 3PTA. Tim grabs the offensive board, drives into a crowd, and has his shot blocked. Harper chides him for not passing out and resetting. The Mavs get the offensive rebound. They swing it around the court, and Tim takes and misses a corner three. Luka has been screaming for the ball. 1:45 Oladipo loses his dribble to a Hardaway steal, but Luka loses the ball on the other end. It goes out of bounds off Indiana, and Mavs get another play. KP is stuck after picking up his dribble in the corner, and flings an overhit pass to Maxi, throwing it away. 1:08 KP blocks an attempted reverse by Oladipo. 0:49 Luka gets a screen from THJ, and is doubled coming off the screen. He passes to THJ, who is swarmed. THJ drives and kicks to KP in the corner. KP has Maxi to his left, and Luka farther over, but takes a side step and shoots over Turner, who blocks the shot. Luka is beyond aggravated. 0:38 After Luka takes the foul to give, Oladipo hits another midrange pull up over KP. Mavs down 1. Mavs take a time out. 0:21 Luka passes to Lee in the corner, rather than taking a contested shot in the paint. Lee misses a three. Oladipo collides with Luka under the basket, hitting him in the mouth, but nothing is called. 0:14 Lee intentionally fouls Oladipo, who hits both free throws. Mavs down three. Mavs take their last time out. 0:07 Luka gets a contested corner three, and misses. He grabs the offensive board, and backs out for another three, but misses it, as well. Game over. In the last 4:39, the Mavs missed ten FGAs and had two turnovers (Luka turnover scored as blocked shot). Their only score was one free throw. The Pacers closed the game on an 8-0 run, scoring on essentially the same play for several possessions. Poor defense. Poor decision-making. Miscommunication. They were right there. Frustrating. https://www.qabickcents.com/dallasbasketball/showthread.php?tid=493 RE: OFFSEASON: Mavs Trade & FA (Nov 20?) + Salary Chart | $109.1M cap - DanSchwartzgan - 11-09-2020 (11-08-2020, 11:34 AM)DanSchwartzman Wrote: One other cap management note. I've advocated that WCS would probably opt-in because he would make an extra $400k (not insigificant), and have a $2.9mm cap hold. OTN who posts at LMF pointed out that if he opts out and resigns at the minimum with Dallas, he would have the same EB rights to go up to the league average salary, but his hold would be closer to $900k. That extra $2mm in cap space might help in 2021. It only matters if they are hanging onto cap room (which I hope they don't do). With the cap guidance for 21 now at $111,324,000 (GA max = $33,397,200) the Mav's are now able to control their own destiny if they move Wright and employ the plan above. What I mean by controlling their own destiny is they can S/W Powell to get to the number they need. Obviously, it would be better to trade Powell, but we really don't know what his value is going to be a year from now. They could also trade away either of Curry or Maxi and get to their number...but do they really want to do that? Giannis makes Powell unnecessary and if Plan Powder in its purest form is the goal, then controlling ones destiny is important. The point is that while they may try to get a star in 2020, if they don't get one, their fallback is likely to be Plan Powder. Sign someone to a one year MLE, try to move up in the draft and try to move Wright for an expiring deal. By my numbers, I show $925,000 of room under these assumptions (WCS takes the minimum, S/W Powell, trade Wright for an expiring deal). That $925k gets you to about the 12th pick if you are trying to move up to the "lottery". BTW, Kevin Pelton came out with draft Tiers this morning. FWIW, here is where he has the class ranked. Tier 1: Ball Tier 2: Edwards, Haliburton Tier 3: Avdija, Okongwu, Wiseman Tier 4: Hampton, Hayes, Nesmith, Okoro, Toppin, Vassell (that's 12 players) Tier 5: Anthony, Bey, Green, Maxey, Maledon, Williams (that's 18 players) As I've said before, IF THJ is the path to Giannis, then Dallas needs to get his replacement in hand sooner rather than later. BTW, not advocating PP here. Just pointing out the numbers in case that is the plan...and I get that big market teams seem to be able to make salaries disappear (so no need to point it out for the umpteenth time). Give them certainty for now and give them chances to make moves. If they flop again demand a trade a year from now. Too much uncertainty and money to be lost by skipping the deal. Of course, Bucks don't have to accept the trade request. But I'd be surprised if they didn't. You almost always see the guy get traded in the end. RE: OFFSEASON: Mavs Trade & FA (Nov 20?) + Salary Chart | $109.1M cap - Mavs2019 - 11-09-2020 That´s why I said, if the Hornets were interested in such a deal, I´d swap Wright, Jackson, Powell and maybe a couple future 2nd rounders for Batum right now. Carlisle had no interest to play Wright or Jackson in the play-offs, when we were down to 8-9 players. He never will. If swapping Powell for Batum saves us from trading future 1st rounders, Curry, Brunson, Kleber or hopefully some promising rookies we draft in 10 days, you do it. There will be plenty of UFA bigs that you can pay 10M for a single season to be Powell: Meyers-Leonard Henson Biyombo RE: OFFSEASON: Mavs Trade & FA (Nov 20?) + Salary Chart | $109.1M cap - KillerLeft - 11-09-2020 (11-09-2020, 11:59 AM)cjeter24 Wrote: Honestly if I was Giannis, I'd be signing that supermax at free agency. Two sides to that coin: 1) You're right, and there are other benefits to signing, too. If he doesn't, Giannis's future is literally the only thing anyone will care about in Milwaukee, or any city the travel to for games, for the entire season. He and the team can THINK they're prepared for that, but I'm betting that's the type of distraction that's worse than imagined when you actually live through it. 2) BUT, I'm here to tell you that Milwaukee sports are and have always been in a BAD situation. I used to do some work out there, and it's not hyperbole to say that the owners for all of their teams are among the cheapest in all of pro sports. They're only 45 minutes away from Chicago (the Chicago public train system can literally take you to Milwaukee), so the real fans have options and the casual fans don't support the teams. I 100% promise you that all of this "we'll pay the luxury tax" BS is only about keeping him. The second he signs, the clock on that thinking starts to count down, and a year from now they'll be dumping someone to get under the LT. Giannis's agent understands this, I promise. I'm not too far off from your thinking, but A) I think there's a chance of moving those guys in a slightly more productive way, and B) if not, that same type of "just create space" deal should be available at the trade deadline. It almost always is. I agree that waiting until next summer is too late, despite all the talk about how teams can create space anytime they want. I don't think it's nearly as easy as people flippantly declare, especially when you're short on sweeteners to attach in such deals. If Giannis's future is still cloudy at the deadline and there are players here with guaranteed money past this season who aren't even in the rotation, then by all means, clear that space. Just my opinion. But, if you can turn them into guys who ARE going to be in your rotation NOW, that's even better, because then it won't hurt so much to have to move them, or Curry, Kleber, etc. RE: OFFSEASON: Mavs Trade & FA (Nov 20?) + Salary Chart | $109.1M cap - Mavs2019 - 11-09-2020 (11-09-2020, 08:56 AM)ClutchDirk Wrote: https://youtu.be/G0R8baDswbAPay attention kids: On a show hosted out of the Bay area, Windhorst had to throw in the Warriors. If it´s not Giannis it´s going to be a young 20/10 stud like John Collins, Lauri Markkanen or Jarrett Allen. We are getting a high end starter next summer. These guys are not stupid. Besides winning what also matters is that Luka will get you PAID in the future. What I think @"Mavs2019" understands that many don't is that it's very likely that this path will produce other good options, even if Giannis isn't available. The ways of using that space to your advantage (when you already have a good team, and aren't starting from scratch) go far beyond a simple list of who might be a free agent, imo. We don't have to perfectly clear the decks prior to 2021, but we have to get to within easy striking distance. I used the term controlling their own destiny to denote this. The other part of the concept is clearing space while still having a team around the 3 stars. This isn't the same as some of the cases in years past where a Miami or a GSW or a Los Angeles team could give away assets to clear room.
