RE: OFFSEASON: Mavs Trade & Free Agency (Oct 18?) + Salary Chart - KillerLeft - 09-06-2020 (09-06-2020, 09:01 AM)omahen Wrote:(09-06-2020, 08:40 AM)KillerLeft Wrote: I'm a fan of WCS's potentia Oh, it's not that I don't understand your logic. I do. Yours is just not the conclusion I come to, personally. Your take on this suggests that the extra money, even just for this one season, doesn't mean anything to him. I'd bet that it does. You're suggesting that he's smart enough to decide that guaranteed (or a higher perceived opportunity for) playing time represents a ladder to a more established career, but that he's NOT smart enough to realize that getting experience with a team/system for which he's well suited and with a history of developing other players in his exact, current predicament might help even more. You're assuming that the teams you mentioned view their rosters the same way you do, and similarly reach the conclusion that he's a fit for them. You're also assuming that Powell and Boban are both inevitably in the Mavericks' plans for the near and mid-range future, when it's pretty clear that whatever path they ultimately choose, ridding themselves of Powell's contract and going all in on 2021 free agency is at least being considered. Hell, Boban could very easily be a thrown in on a deal during the draft or the first week of free agency. I could go on. The point is that there are many variables to which we're not privy. Now, any and all of these "ifs" and more could be correct or incorrect, but my opinion is that when you remove anything that's not speculative, the most likely scenario (far from a given, of course) is that the dude pokes his head up, checks the temp on what's out there for him, and ultimately opts in. I hope he does, but I won't take it too hard if he doesn't. I will be super pissed if the Mavs overpay for the dude THIS offseason, however. RE: OFFSEASON: Mavs Trade & Free Agency (Oct 18?) + Salary Chart - Mavs2019 - 09-06-2020 Maybe WCS doesn´t like it here. Maybe Mavs don´t like him. I doubt he´ll leave, because somebody will guarantee him more minutes or money. This does depend a lot on information that we simply don´t have, about the personal time off for various family reasons. He did too perform. From what I have seen, and seeing him with the Kings and Warriors before, he is a far better roll man (not just rim-running) than most here acknowledge. He could reach Powell's level with just a little bit of work on timing/reps (remember, it took 5 years of damn hard work for Powell to become the good-but-not-in-a-million-years-deserving-of-that-preposterous-contract player he is now), and he is already echelons above him in terms of the physical gifts for above-the-rim play. He also has the physical tools to play post defense and protect the rim - aspects of the game which have been a six-year-long facepalm with Powell. In Robert Plant's voice: "Does anyone remember rim protection???" Which is a skill our friend Bobi doesn't provide either, BTW. Another BTW, Bobi is going nowhere on the pure basis of chemistry/locker room with Luka. Where he is could be a 3, but it might be an area they designated for big men to develop their 2 shot. Some haters say, "He'll never play here because he can't shoot." Then for fRick Carlisle's sake why does Powell get minutes, when every time he bombs from deep all knowledgeable Mav fans groan, "Aw, hell, no?" And Powell has that big juicy cap-slaughtering makes-THJ-look-like-a-bargain contract. Just admit it, haters. It's all about the tats. RE: OFFSEASON: Mavs Trade & Free Agency (Oct 18?) + Salary Chart - StepBackJay - 09-06-2020 I like me some Jae Crowder. I wish we could get him back somehow but I think he will have a lot of options. I don't know how he is shooting twelve 3's a game in the playoffs. At any rate he's a good defender and shoots 3s. RE: OFFSEASON: Mavs Trade & Free Agency (Oct 18?) + Salary Chart - DanSchwartzgan - 09-06-2020 (09-05-2020, 11:13 PM)DanSchwartzman Wrote: On a different topic, on the Bobby Karalla and Skin Podcast today Skin identified a playmaker who can play D and hit an open shot as the team’s biggest need. This came out of a discussion of Burke. He was basically saying we need a better version of Burke, especially in late game situations. He said Brunson, who he likes, doesn’t have the speed to be that. Here's another name. Not flashy, but moves the needle some defensively. We've all said we need someone with a little "dog" in him defensively, but that player has to be able to hit an open shot. Yes, we need to be able to cover star wings, but we are not good at covering star guards right now either. A 3 & D PG isn't a thing most places, but most places don't have Luka. So how about a guy who is very disruptive defensively, hits 40% of his 3's and is a passable play-maker (recall we don't want to take the ball out of Luka's hands completely). Jevon Carter probably can't run an NBA offence as a lead guard. He might not be able to run a bench squad as a lead guard (we have Brunson for that). But he can make life miserable for other guards and hits over 40% of his 3's. He's RFA on a cheap Phoenix team with all sorts of other mouths to feed and other PG's on the roster. Maybe you make an offer with part of the MLE thinking Phoenix won't match. Maybe you offer Jackson and a future second (kind of like the Wright deal). The funny thing is he's struggling to get minutes in Phoenix, but I think he might be able to start here. Not so much because of any greatness on his part, but because of fitting better with Luka than with Rubio. RE: OFFSEASON: Mavs Trade & Free Agency (Oct 18?) + Salary Chart - omahen - 09-06-2020 (09-06-2020, 07:41 PM)DanSchwartzman Wrote: So how about a guy who is very disruptive defensively, hits 40% of his 3's and is a passable play-maker (recall we don't want to take the ball out of Luka's hands completely). I agree he is a distruptive defender. But his shooting should be taken a bit more careful imho. First of all his sample is very small. Secondly, he shot just 33 % on threes season before on a similar sample and he didn't cut much playmaking minutes even before Rubio came to town. Both seasons he was horrible on twos. I think a contender should aim for better starters. RE: OFFSEASON: Mavs Trade & Free Agency (Oct 18?) + Salary Chart - SamStetz - 09-06-2020 Anyone else open to bringing back Matthews for an off the bench role making the vet min or slightly more? So, I’m going to use an even smaller sample size. 17 games. That is the number of times he played 20 minutes or more. One of the things I like to see when looking at young emerging players is they rise to the occasion when given more minutes. The difference is night and day between Carter at 20+ and Carter playing less than 20 minutes. All of his percentages go way up and the team does well, as measured by +/-when he plays more. There are no guarantees, but that is encouraging to me. I have no idea whether 33% the season before or 42% this season is the true reflection. I do like that it is progress. BTW, he makes almost half his 3’s when the game is within 5 points and .438 in games he gets 20 minutes or more. If Luka raises all boats, what might happen if he got minutes and space? If you look at Carter’s lineup combinations, he shows good numbers when surrounded by shooters. I’m not envisioning him carrying an offense. I’m envisioning him standing in the corner hitting threes (46% last season which was better than Maxi, Curry, DFS, KP and THJ) and then working hard to disrupt the opposing PG. A 3 & D PG. Not every team can do that, but one with Luka can...maybe should. Might be, he plays more than 20 minutes, when he is hot and less all the other times Not that more minutes automatically means more production from him. One sidenote - watching him against Mavs I would never guessed he is 24. I though he is 30 or something RE: OFFSEASON: Mavs Trade & Free Agency (Oct 18?) + Salary Chart - Hypermav - 09-07-2020 (09-07-2020, 05:35 AM)omahen Wrote: One sidenote - watching him against Mavs I would never guessed he is 24. RE: OFFSEASON: Mavs Trade & Free Agency (Oct 18?) + Salary Chart - jesusshuttlesworth82 - 09-07-2020 Giannis is a good enough dude that if he decides to leave, I bet he facilitates a sign and trade so the Bucks get some assets back.
