RE: 2022 NBA Draft: June 23, 7 pm | DAL picks #26 - Kammrath - 06-08-2022 Current consensus mock: The Mavs would have the choice of Jake LaRavia, Dalen Terry, and Christian Koloko in this scenario. LaRavia and Terry are quickly becoming my two favorite guys who have a realistic shot of being there at #26. I really only like Eason and Liddell better than them once you get post-lottery. Had Dallas drafting Agbagi who slides a little. laravia and Beauchamp went after Dallas pick. LOL Kessler at 56??? Um no. How does that even happen, with most of 2nd round passing him by? That's one problem with these multi-picker mock drafts --- if someone gets overlooked above their slot, they might opt to stay on the guy they like already (so they might hit the actual guy for draft time) rather than grab the overlooked one (which, in a real draft, gets scooped up before falling too far.) RE: 2022 NBA Draft: June 23, 7 pm | DAL picks #26 - Kammrath - 06-08-2022 Though it would not surprise me to have Dalen Terry go in the late teens. If you watch his film (not just highlights) it is really hard not to come away loving him. ESPN's latest mock had DAL taking Keels because "Brunson is an unrestricted free agent." Based on what Kidd and Nico have shown me so far I do not see any "small guards" in our future. RE: 2022 NBA Draft: June 23, 7 pm | DAL picks #26 - F Gump - 06-08-2022 I was reminded of how skewed our view can be, when we try to evaluate draft options. I went to look at some extended video of J Terry (showing every time he took a shot in a game), and then began to observe Koloko. It's probably a more objective view of Koloko. Who looked like a big nothing, really - he can run smoothly, board a little, and would probably have good height and wingspan results, but not much hoops expertise on display in the game action I saw. If that's typical play for him, his landing in the late 30s in expectations makes a lot of sense. This is why this site is my go-to for draft eval: https://www.youtube.com/c/HardwoodHoopsCentralsNBADraftGreenRoom/videos There you get film of every shot (miss or make), turnover, assist, rebound, and defensive possession. Highlights are helpful to initially turn you on to someone, but nothing beats watching all the good and bad. His form looks really weird and I am not sure if he will ever be a threat with his shot. I saw some Video of Koloko and his shot mechanics looked good for me and would Like to see more of him shooting. I don’t think Kessler has it in him, I dont think. He looks smooth for such a big guy and he is going at it, especially against smaller players. (just the highlights but plenty of them.) The shotblocking is great and will translate, just to good timing and length. Don´t think he will be there at #26. He's everything we need for rim protection, but I don't see him being able to guard the perimeter. This is not a guy who gets even 20 minutes per game in my opinion. Not in today's NBA. Guys like Tari Eason are probably the future of the center position now. Kessler may be too limited. We need the rim protection more than the perimeter switchability. Kidd runs Vogel's system and that system is predicated on having a serious rim protector anchor the paint. You can get away with 4 on 5 on the perimeter because the defense has the interior angles as long as you don't have to worry about the drive too. And it's not like the guy is Boban level unathletic, he can actually run the floor pretty well The guy blocked 155 shots this season, that's the highest number by any player in college since Anthony Davis in 2012, and he's very good at staying out of foul trouble for as many shots as he blocks. If we're not able or willing to trade for Gobert's contract this would be the next best option. Though he very well might not even be available by #26 making that point moot. Toronto doesn't have their pick though which helps. You need both now if you're going to play extended minutes in this league. That's what teams are looking for. And you can get that. But I don't see any center in the Mavs range that suggests that kind of player in the draft. Gobert is somewhat mobile and so remarkable in his rim protection that he can stay on the floor against some smaller teams... but only barely. I certainly don't see that type of center where the Mavs are drafting. Maybe Kokolo can learn the skill needed, but I don't think Kessler is ready to guard NBA wings. The point is I think you know the personnel better when your center has been playing in the NBA than when he's coming out of college. The big 7' centers in college are frequently one-dimensional. Ten years ago, Kessler would have been a lottery pick. Now guys like Eason of LSU are the players GMs are looking for. RE: 2022 NBA Draft: June 23, 7 pm | DAL picks #26 - Chicagojk - 06-08-2022 Here is where I am falling on the draft: I am making the assumption we will not be able to trade up. Even if we were able to, I would probably be unwilling to give up the assets to move up. Here is my ranking at 26: 1) Jaden Hardy- Betting on the skill, not necessarily the fit right now. 2) Jalen Williams- I have trouble seeing him reach 26, but weird things always happen 3) Dalen Terry- Betting on his skillset and future projection 4) Marjon Beauchamp- Probably my least confident choice, but I have liked what I have watched. I would be fine with Kendall Brown and EJ Liddell at 26, but just have the guys above over them. Brown is another projection and will take time. Liddell is probably the better player than most above, but I just like others better. I really tried to find a spot for Patrick Baldwin. He is a skilled 6'10 player who is suppose to be an elite shooter. My issue, besides his poor 11 games this year, is I can't feel certain he is indeed an elite shooter. Having history watching him for 2-3 years and working him out may give you a better feel, but I don't have that to go off of. buy into the second round: Mavs already have a full roster, but these are guys I would trade up for not taking in effect of roster openings. Just guys I like. I am making an assumption that we will not be able to buy a pick in the top 40. Maybe that is wrong, but just for this I am looking past 40. I haven't watched enough of the foreign centers. If Koloko slips past 40, he would be on my list. I am just not sure he does. 1) JD Davison- He is my blind spot this year. No where close to being ready, but if he is a hard worker, I can see his game really blossoming in the next two years. It would not shock me if he did go back for his Soph season that he would have a jump similar to Arizona's Mathurin. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2dGevSgSnO4&t=204s 2) Jaylin Williams- Probably better in the 40 range. He has some athletic shortcomings but is a very smart player and got better as the season went on. Still young. 3) David Roddy- My big asterick here is he needs to lose 15 pounds and get leaner to have a chance to stick. Payton Watson (no production) and John Butler are right outside this list. Butler is a perfect long range 2 way guy. He is a 7 footer with wing skills. Just really weak and limited production. Undrafted guys- 1) Kenneth Lofton Jr.- I love fat guys. He already has lost 30 pounds. Needs to lose probably 20-30 more. He has very good footwork despite being severely overweight last year. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PjphfY_jW3I 2) Moussa Diabate- He is a well put together athlete and someone to gamble on a two way on. 3) Trevion Williams- Really skilled offensive player that shared a role with another big at Purdue. Defense is the concern. 4) Alondes Williams- Like Moses Wright last year, Williams is the ACC player of the year. He may also go undrafted like Moses Wright. They were lucky to have two of the greatest shooters ever and a guy (Green) who fits in perfectly. Even they though have Looney and drafted Wiseman. Maybe Phoenix beats us more easily if they had not over analyzed and fed the ball 30 times to Ayton. When Curry fades a little the next team going on a run might have a big guy as the centerpiece no pun. Stephen Adams gave GS a lot of issues and with a healthy Ja, Memphis probably would have won that series. We are a team that looks really outclassed on the front line. The fact that we won a lot of games is despite that limitation. Unless you are saying that you feel a given wing can be a true long term differnce maker, I would go with Kessler if he slips. Several mock drafts now have him lower than #26 You're right though, we are outclassed on the front line. By adding Kessler, we will be adding a big, somewhat slow rookie who might struggle to get minutes while learning the system. He's going to struggle when teams go small. My personal feeling is that he's a much bigger gamble than Dalen Terry or Jake LaRivia - both of whom might be there when we pick, and who are strong enough to get good rotation minutes. I do admit though, I'm gun-shy about giant centers who have specialized skill sets that keep them in the paint. You are not getting any sure thing in most drafts even at the top, let alone at 26. Each one will come with their flaws. The challenge will be to evaluate which flaws you can live with. Coming to Kessler I have seen some where they say he has enough athleticism to stay on the switches. Some that say he doesn’t. What I am saying is that same logic should hold true for some of the centers who are still doing very well in this league. Who on our team guards those folks if we get into a playoff matchup? Sure Kessler might get hurt a few times but he is also going to give our guards a 2nd line of defense and also provide size and rebounding underneath. There is something to be said about blocking so many shots without getting into foul trouble. Looks like his outside shot also might be getting better. If you tell me he is Bobanesque at the perimeter, sure pass on him. OTOH if his perimeter dense while not great is comparable to most big men currently succeeding in this league, then he should be considered strongly.
