Yes, Chicago is in a strong position to bargain for now to extract as much as they can. But the moment Markkanen gives up and signs his QO he becomes untradeable and Chicago will get nothing back at all when he inevitably leaves next summer for nothing. Maybe they're fine with that for one more year of a guy they don't even like, but I doubt it. So I think all sides should be motivated to find a deal before the season starts. Right now it's just a waiting game to see who blinks first.

All three parties are in a strong position and yet all are beholden to each other.
- LM has leverage because he can sign the QO, but he doesn't really want to get stuck on a one year deal in CHI.
- DAL has leverage because CHI could lose LM for nothing, but if they don't bid high enough this could be their only shot at LM.
- CHI has leverage because there is no one who can pay LM a lot of money, but if their asking price is too high they will lose this asset for absolutely nothing.

Do we really think Markkanen at $12M per year is that much worse of a trade asset than Aaron Gordon at $17M? How much worse?
Orlando got RJ Hampton (24th pick) and a top 4 protected 2023 pick from Chicago. So you can likely get most of the pick value back for Markkanen.
I think this whole pick thing is BS or they really delusional enough to think they can get an unprotected 1st. I think they want Kleber and Mavs are only offering Powell + WCS, Terry and/or a 2nd round pick.

My gut is to resist giving up a 1st when CHI has its back against a wall....but if the contract with LM is that good, I don't hate it.

When we hear from Stein that the Dallas Mavericks are definitely interested in Markkanen and that they would love to get him, my ears perk up because it's Stein --- but then it's hard to know what definitely interested and love mean in practical terms that define what they might be willing to do to get him.
We can easily assume they would love to get him for free, and would hate him if it cost a max contract, 2 1st rounders, and players like DFS, Kleber, and more.
But in that huge in between, where are they? That issue drives what they might offer. Do they have a significant need for him, as to a role and minutes, how would that work, and why are they paying more to add yet another big? Other than the fact that he is talented and young and has some skill on offense, I'm not sure I get this.

1) One of the things we have learned so far about how Nico wants to build this team around Luka is with shooting. RB and SB both shot over 40% from three last year. So did LM. So I think the primary draw is shooting (and youth like you said).
2) I think it signals that either DP or Maxi are outgoing in a deal for LM OR that the Mavs are planning some other trade(s) that would shuffle the big man deck. No way the Mavs add another big without at least one or two outgoing some way, some how.
