The Mavs would love Dragic but not at his current salary. They would only be interested after a buyout. He also said another team could emerge to take back Dragic, so no guarantees he ends up in Dallas. If what Stein is saying is true then Cuban has lost it. Is Dragic at 19.5 mil really that much when they were prepared to give Lowry close to 30 mil? Seriously? If they let Dragic fall through it tells me they seriously don't care about competing. I hope fans start to boo Cuban because maybe thats the only way to bruise his thick ego. RE: 2021 FREE AGENCY: JC accepts 5 yr/$125M deal to ATL - Aussiebballer - 08-05-2021 I think it is probably the Raptors not wanting Powell’s 2 yr deal. They will need to get creative with maybe sending Powell to OKC but that will cost an asset. Or maybe using Redick to match in a sign and trade to Raptors or a third team. RE: 2021 FREE AGENCY: JC accepts 5 yr/$125M deal to ATL - SleepingHero - 08-05-2021 (08-05-2021, 02:01 AM)Mapka Wrote: It's not the money, it's the tradematch. Which is even worse. Powell+WCS+Terry are inconsequential and probably won't be played all that much in the playoffs. All could easily be replaced by min guys as soon as they leave (maybe Powell's elite roll finishing will be tough to replicate exactly but there's Mike Tobey available!). Just boggles my mind Cuban's infatuation with Powell, again if it is really true that's why the Mavs are hesitant. I get that Dragic could theoretically be had for less/free but why even chance it? With how many failures this front office has had the last 10 years in free agency why not just go for the bird in the hand versus banking off 2 in the bush? RE: 2021 FREE AGENCY: JC accepts 5 yr/$125M deal to ATL - Aussiebballer - 08-05-2021 Issue is that let’s say the Raptors do buyout Dragic. The Mavs can’t offer him much money right? He could just go to a better contender or to a team for much more money. RE: 2021 FREE AGENCY: JC accepts 5 yr/$125M deal to ATL - SkenfromLMF - 08-05-2021 There is not a lot of money left, especially among the contenders... so my take is they feel very confident that they would Dragic for the minimum rather than him going to OKC or SAS, who have the most available off the top of my head. Now whether he becomes available is the game of chicken that gets played here. In My backup scenario - Dallas works out a 3-way where they take Dragic for WCS & Burke and divert Powell to OKC for Favors (TPE). Make Toronto tip OKC to pay the difference. I think this would balance the roster, make Luka happy, and put a feather in #Nicotiation... Of course making Toronto pay a bigger piece to Dallas in taking on Dragic would be even better... I don't know where I am in regards to picking up Dragic on the minimum. - I am a fan of having Bird rights on players I think I like. I'm not really afraid of this - if somebody wanted him so bad, he would trade for him. And there isn't so much money left at all. Svi shot the lights out at Kansas. He gets to the NBA, and he's consistently inconsistent. If he doesn't regain his stroke soon, he'll be out of the league shortly because he can't do anything else. RE: 2021 FREE AGENCY: JC accepts 5 yr/$125M deal to ATL - omahen - 08-05-2021 If Mavs don't do something (reasonably significant), this offseason will be a big F from me. I said Bullock, Brown, THJ moves are totally fine if there are another trade and TE move for PG and PF lined up. I am very disapointed that doesn't look like it. I said Bullock, Brown, THJ moves are totally fine if there are another trade and TE move for PG and PF lined up. I am very disapointed that doesn't look like it. My grade will be low as well if no other moves are made. I was pretty unfamiliar with both Bullock's and Brown's games. After reading up on them, I can understand both moves. Time will tell if they keep their level of play from last year(Bullock) or improve their level of play (Brown). I understand wanting to get more length on the wing and good catch and shoot three point marksman. That makes sense. But that only makes sense to me if you also do the bigger stuff. I have said from the beginning that I really like Hardaway and thinks he fits very well here. My fear though if we resigned him, we would be trying to improve around the edges and this team needed more. I was hoping for one guy who could be our 3/4 best player on our team with hopefully some upside to his game. I would also been ok if they rolled the dice with a few guys who could be a much more valued asset in two years. At this point, I think it is a very difficult path to get either player. For instance, Markkanen may not be the best fit, but I think he has upside. Maybe he fits in perfectly here. Maybe he doesn't but he shows growth in his game and you can move him like when Golden State made a move for D'Angelo Russell when the fit was clearly not great. We will see if that works out for Golden State but they did wind up with a pretty good long term piece in the draft. I wonder if part of the Mavs strategy heading into FA is if they were expecting Miami to not pick up Goran's contract and when that happened they were left scrambling trying to find a bigger fitting part to improve the roster? So hopefully the moves are not done yet, but my grade will not be high if we graded to this point. My hunch is that Dragic was not a big focus of the Mavs' offseason plans and is more of a "let's see if we can take advantage of this opportunity" type move knowing that he would be a good fit, etc. I'm hoping they weren't scrambling based on Dragic. Totally agree that I'm hoping there are some other moves lined up (with or without Dragic) to finish out the roster. I'm thinking there are, but I'm always a Mavs optimist. If Dragic was not their plan, then I am wondering what other plan they had for a secondary playmaker and why they have not pulled the trigger on it yet? They have spent all of their cap and only have the TPE (or potentially converted MLE) left and there is not much out there. RE: 2021 FREE AGENCY: JC accepts 5 yr/$125M deal to ATL - omahen - 08-05-2021 "only six free agents remain who project to deliver more than $6 million in value for 2021-22": Hart, Markkanen, Millsap, Jackson, Oubre, Schroeder Dragic: "While they (Toronto) could take his contract into the season and try to cut a deal later, their best opportunity night be to work something out with Dallas more quickly." https://theathletic.com/2753715/2021/08/05/hollinger-with-nba-free-agency-party-ending-quickly-the-trading-game-begins/ RE: 2021 FREE AGENCY: JC accepts 5 yr/$125M deal to ATL - haveitall - 08-05-2021 (08-05-2021, 10:54 AM)omahen Wrote: "only six free agents remain who project to deliver more than $6 million in value for 2021-22": Hart, Markkanen, Millsap, Jackson, Oubre, Schroeder This is the frustration. Its not that Sterling Brown and Bullock are bad signings its that they should not be the first players signed. Markkannen, Jackson, Oubre, Schroeder may not be perfect 3 and D guys but they are more talented and one of these guys should have been signed before going with players down the rotation. Then the question is the TPE, now you are forced to trade with another team that probably wants 2nd picks or young players as compensation, so you are not necessarily getting better through free agency. But the fact they are the leftovers seems to suggest the entire slate of NBA management disagrees with your assessment of these four guys. And if we’d waited for their price to get reasonable before inking Bullock and Brown, there’s little doubt those fellas would be gone. Listen, I’m disappointed too. That seems to be what this time of year is all about. The anti-Christmas for Mavs fans. But the flip side is this: Kawhi might be asking for a 1+1. (Pay me for a year of rehab and THEN I’ll decide whether to stay or leave.) Lowry’s deal might make Kemba’s Boston deal look good. (You remember Kemba’s deal. The one that got Danny Ainge fired.) Collins might have been matched by Atlanta at any price. (Leaving Fish to write about getting kicked in the Collins.) Dragic might end up here for free instead of costing assets. (Seriously, what is Toronto’s alternative, unless the Heat offered them some kind of alternative compensation should they be unable to flip him to Dallas by Friday.) Which all reduces, in my mind, to the ultimate question: Will the Lakers or Heat steal Luka from us at some point down the road? The answer is probably. They get everybody else. But hopefully it will be after Luka is old and gray like Malone and Melo. That’s what I’m holding out hope for. They may sign a few more bottom of the rotation/roster guys but Bullock will be as good as it gets. I think this is astute. When the entire league is saying these guys are not worth what they are asking for, I think that’s a signal that we need to re-calibrate our opinions of them. That is not to say that they are worthless or that they might not be bargains at a certain price, but it seems pretty clear that nobody prioritized any of those guys, not even with the MLE. |
