RE: ROSTER TALK: Trade/FA Ideas (Mar 25 TDL) + Salary Chart - DanSchwartzgan - 02-14-2021 (02-14-2021, 11:34 AM)Scott41theMavs Wrote: What I don't understand in both of your posts is the "we don't have the cap room in '21 to do this" part. If they went the Chandler route, wouldn't they have just the difference between his cap hold and his non-guaranteed salary affecting things and then could pay him whatever salary needed as you said earlier? It would seem that cap room then isn't an issue at all. That’s exactly what I wrote. Reread the last paragraph where I say “don’t have to have cap room”. Yesterday’s conversation where I said cap room would be needed (if the approach is CBA legal) referred to doing what Chicago might do with LaVine. They have the same 120% (in LaVine’s case of previous salary). Eric Pincus has written that Chicago could renegotiate LaVines 21 salary AND THEN extend him based on the new salary. But, Chicago would have to have cap room to do this. I see 4 ways the Brunson situation could resolve itself: 1. Let him get to UFA in 22 and take your chances (this is just stupid cap management in my opinion) 2. Trade him so you don’t have to deal with this 3. Renegotiate his 21 salary and extend based on that number (the LaVine model). To repeat, I’m not sure this is legal. There are differences between LaVine’s situation and Brunson’s. I’ve just not taken the time to research yet. 4. Renounce his small 21 salary making him RFA and resign him using cap room and a small cap hold that is just a little more than his renounced 21 non-guaranteed salary. RE: ROSTER TALK: Trade/FA Ideas (Mar 25 TDL) + Salary Chart - StepBackJay - 02-14-2021 So my rough understanding is that Mavs could give Brunson a new contract next offseason while they have his rights or he will become a UFA in 2022. The best path forward in terms of asset management is to give him a new deal. I think Brunson has started to get more attention as an impact player this year. That being said I still think Mavs can lock him up on a deal that isn't too pricey. Thanks for the point out. I guess I should of stated there own player - but now I see that JJ did re-up in 2008 before he left for the Wolves in 2011. And a yes for Devin in 2007 on resigning his rook contract - before being traded in 2008. Still don't think the MBT will spent the bucks to resign Brunson when they have Terry on a similar cheep contract. RE: ROSTER TALK: Trade/FA Ideas (Mar 25 TDL) + Salary Chart - StepBackJay - 02-14-2021 (02-14-2021, 10:57 AM)KillerLeft Wrote: I don't think Richardson is a bust here yet, but I do think he's still getting the "honeymoon" benefit of the doubt around here, as if the trade just went through and we don't have actual play in a Mavs uniform to evaluate yet. I think he has been better the last couple of games, particularly on offense, where he has forced less and let the flow of the game come to him more. But for much of the season he has been underwhelming. And, he's a GOOD defender sometimes, for sure. But, he isn't a GREAT defender, imo, or hasn't been that here, so far. I've seen him make some nice plays on that end, but he gets blown by just like everyone else. He's not prime Ariza, Green, Allen, etc. I like Richardson, I do wonder if the Mavs made the right move now all things considered. And I was on the Rich for Curry bandwagon pretty early last offseason. I like Rich as a 3D glue player but I think at best he is like the 4th or 5th option on offense and his defense hasn't quite been amazing yet. My worry is that his price tag is going to get pretty high even if he doesn't have a great season just bc you have too many teams with space and not enough FA's. While I am willing to ride it out this year to see how he does I am also open to the right trade that makes sense. For example if you could get Kyle Lowry for J Rich and JJ I would do that deal. You wouldn't have to have an extension in place bc you are giving up an expiring player. Both teams would be swapping for guys that they believe are better fits with the belief that they can resign them in the offseason. Lineup would be Luka, Lowry, DFS, Maxi, KP with key reserves being Brunson, THJ and WCS. We don't know if Terry is good or not yet and it would be bad asset management to just let Brunson walk in 2022. Mavs need to resign him or trade him. I think the best move is to resign him to a long term deal knowing his stock will rise even further. They can keep him as a core piece or trade him later on. If they view him as ONLY a backup PG, playing exclusively behind their franchise player, then probably not. But, many people here believe he's on his way to becoming a great 3rd guard who can ALSO play significant minutes WITH Luka, and possibly even reach the point where he's the 2nd guard on the team, closing most games. There are signs that the Mavs are starting to wonder that, too, though we don't know what they think for sure. If they DO like him for a role like that, then the mission becomes finding the most cost-effective way to keep him long term, which is where @"DanSchwartzgan"'s great info comes into play. Trade him so you don’t have to deal with thisI wonder if he can bring back anything better than what he already provides the Mavs. He seems to be growing into a starters role. I did see where an Orlando article mention acquiring Josh Richardson. Maybe Jalen could be on their radar as well. After Beal I want Jonathan Isaac for this team. I know he is out for this year but maybe Orlando would let him go for the right price. I can dream. RE: ROSTER TALK: Trade/FA Ideas (Mar 25 TDL) + Salary Chart - StepBackJay - 02-14-2021 My two fave semi-realistic trade ideas thus far are either: 1. Lowry for Rich + JJ 2. Gallo for JJ + a rookie asset RE: ROSTER TALK: Trade/FA Ideas (Mar 25 TDL) + Salary Chart - KillerLeft - 02-14-2021 (02-14-2021, 12:27 PM)StepBackJay Wrote: My two fave semi-realistic trade ideas thus far are either: I think I would do either of those, but I'm more interested in the second one. I have interest in both. I also have a feeling Lowry is going to fetch a nice package from somebody despite him being 34 years old. Oh, for sure. From a team who needs help NOW. That's a move that makes sense for like the top 3 teams in either conference, whichever needs another ball-handler. I just don't think the Mavs are in that class, and by the time they are, he'll be 36, 37 maybe. I just don't think it's a fit, though that's based on what I think his price will be on the market. If the price is only JJ+Richardson, as your post suggested, I'd definitely do that, because he DOES improve this team. The factors involved with the decision are all centered around how much, and is that improvement worth the price given the window, imo. RE: ROSTER TALK: Trade/FA Ideas (Mar 25 TDL) + Salary Chart - DanSchwartzgan - 02-14-2021 (02-14-2021, 12:27 PM)StepBackJay Wrote: My two fave semi-realistic trade ideas thus far are either: I’ve been playing with #1 in my mind. I’ve thought of Fournier also in a similar vein. I get that everyone wants a different PF than the one I’m about to name, but if we get to see Aminu healthy for a few weeks, we might do JRich/JJ for Fournier/Aminu and improve our situation. In the playoffs everything is a grind and that's where you really need more talent on the defensive end. RE: ROSTER TALK: Trade/FA Ideas (Mar 25 TDL) + Salary Chart - dirkfansince1998 - 02-14-2021 I think the next month will tell us a lot about the Mavs plans. If Johnson is still on the roster after the deadline I expect them to go for capspace. RE: ROSTER TALK: Trade/FA Ideas (Mar 25 TDL) + Salary Chart - chaparral - 02-14-2021 Johnson and Richardson put us in the dollar rang of Horford, Haywood, Russell, McCullum, Wiggins and who I think would be assume as a Mavs - Siakam. McCollom - don't see a trade there 5. Wiggins - don't see a trade there. I do like what Horford brings to the table if Mavs could get him for Powell + JJ. |
