They're desperately looking for a PG to be a starter. Brunson is probably looking to be a starter too. I'd do a Brunson+Powell deal for Lauri+Thad Young straight up. It'd make Maxi totally expendable in another trade. If Lauri signs a modest 3 year deal around 43 mil, it'd trade match perfectly with Brunson+Powell's contracts. Powell 11.1 / 11.1 Brunson 1.8 / 3.4 (caphold) Bledsoe 18.1 / 19.3 (3.9 guaranteed) Pelicans get a younger veteran PG to compete with Lewis for the starting spot. I was hopeful the first time and really disappointed when he crashed and burned here. However, I view that through a lens of "if KP is gone" exclusively. If the plan is to play Noel and Porzingis together, I am not only out on that, but I will very, very quickly lose a lot of faith in what this new management team brings to the table. That is a bad, terrible, awful idea. I don´t want Noel without Porzingis. Noel is a PF with size, great speed and shot blocking ability, but no width/bulk to protect the paint and block the lane as a center. He has no range on offense, but he´s better than Porzingis in the restricted area and above league average, although not elite for a big. Unless you want another small-ball four like DFS next to Porzingis, I only see guys like Noel, Allen and maybe John Collins as viable options to help improve our interior defense. Of course the other option would be trading Porzingis. ----------- I can´t wait for the draft. I wish we could spy on the MBT for the night to get a feeling for who pushes for which strategic decisions. I think the Mavs should acquire an early 2nd rounder from the Thunder or Pelicans, just to pretend they are doing something differently now and keep our hopes going for another few days before Plan Powder 11.0 arrives on August 2nd. <-- these are don´t take the last comment too seriously smilies. RE: ROSTER TALK: DAL w/ $22.7M-$34.4M | FA Aug 2, 5 pm | trading KP top priority? - StepBackJay - 07-16-2021 I like the Noel fit with KP a lot. He is like WCS/Powell rolled into one + shot blocking which neither of those guys have consistently. Noel is an underrated 2 way guy who fits well next to KP. I would love a Norman Powell + Noel summer. That is a bad, terrible, awful idea. On what basis is that bad? Noel does more than what Powell does and Powell has played a lot with KP. They actually fit on the court pretty well. Noel is much more of a defensive presence with his shot blocking ability. Noel is like WCS and Powell combined. WCS has played some with KP and while he fits defensively he is an inconsistent mess on offense. Noel would be infinitely more reliable on offense, similar to Powell with more defensive upside. I still like Powell off the bench. Noel also I don't think would cost an arm and a leg. He seems like a guy that will be an under the radar good signing for some team. RE: ROSTER TALK: DAL w/ $22.7M-$34.4M | FA Aug 2, 5 pm | trading KP top priority? - StepBackJay - 07-16-2021 Mavs brass need to decide whether they want to go with a 2 big lineup (ie a big that cannot shoot next to KP but does the usual "big" things and has some defensive versatility) or the big wing at PF lineup (Maxi, Batum types) or have both capabilities. As long as Maxi and Powell are on the team you already have both lineup possibilities so its a question of what to add or who to upgrade. For me I don't have a strong feeling other than I know Luka likes a roller which would put me more in the 2nd versatile big lineup. I think Collins checks a bunch of boxes in either lineup style which is why he will be high on the Mavs list. If Collins is a no-go then I like Batum as the number 1 "big wing" option or Noel as the "versatile rim-running big" option with cap space leftover for a big fish. RE: ROSTER TALK: DAL w/ $22.7M-$34.4M | FA Aug 2, 5 pm | trading KP top priority? - cow - 07-16-2021 Still want D12 as a part of our big man rotation. Even if you overpay him, he'll be dirt cheap. Seriously? Have you not read any of opinions about this? I'm pretty sure I've had this conversation with you, specifically. 1) both players are centers, and can only play in the modern game (we should be able to stop qualifying that with "modern"...it's been years now) at center. 2) getting through a 7 game series with one center is the trick, nowadays. TWO? That's just not a street I want to travel. Reasonable people can disagree, but I'd think the person who hates Rudy Gobert would agree with this perspective. Neither of these guys are as quick and versatile defensively as Gobert (Noel is much, MUCH closer) and you guys want to play them significant minutes TOGETHER? As said above, if we decide to go with two big lineup we could do a lot worse than rolling with KP/Noel and bringing Maxi/Powell off the bench. Noel can be had for roughly MLE money, so you have enough left over to go after any of Conley/Lowry/Ball/Powell, any of who would make a lot of sense. Then you use the room to bolster the brunson/Green backcourt bench. None of the above, and that's kind of my point. I am a one big guy. Would LOVE a bigg-ish 4 in the mix (bigger than DFS), but imho he must CLEARLY be a forward. I was really into Jerami Grant last off-season, for context. If I HAD to choose one of those three to play the four on defense, I would choose Powell, and I'm saying that with a straight face. I do think Noel represents a TREMENDOUS improvement on defense at CENTER over Porzingis. All of this is only my opinion, but I pay attention to who actually stays useful in the playoffs, and I FEEL like size, in the traditional "size of the bigs" sort of way is a completely antiquated measuring stick. Size will ALWAYS be important, but these days the arms race is for ALL players on the floor to have good size, to me. Wings and Forwards are the things, imo. I would put Noel closer to a Collins than a Gobert. Well maybe that's the source of the disagreement, then. I would have said something similar before @"Kammrath"'s Gobert thread last year. After paying closer attention to him, my respect for his ability to move is at an all-time high. Maybe too high. Still, though, my bottom line opinion is this: I don't think Noel is "forward enough" to be able to guard Kawhi Leonard, Paul George, Lebron, Jason Tatum, etc, etc, etc. I DO think that if he's playing center and is the slowest, least agile defender on the floor, then you've got something good, and THAT has a chance of being useful in the playoffs. |
