How anyone can sit here and still claim rookies are developed is crazy. We just played a U22 Thunder roster, and he´s still too scared to play Terry over shitty Burke, or Bey over shitty Powell, because he believes the other veterans on this team are not good enough to absorb that alleged drop in performance level? But apparently Carlisle is happy to win 40 games on average for 12 years and getting dumped without a prayer in the 1st round. Unless you are born ready like a Euro-League MVP or a two time NCAA champion, you are getting f*** all. They were not developed either. You think Pokusevki would have seen a single minute under Carlisle so far? Carlisle would have seen him as a clown. After 18 months he´d be thrown into a trade or released. We´ll see how long Luka is happy with this BS. RE: ROSTER TALK: DAL with $25.7M - $37.3M in capspace this summer - StepBackJay - 03-30-2021 I think Rick likes to play guys that do what he wants to do. DFS started 35 games as an undrafted rookie and averaged 20mpg. Jae Crowder played a lot his rookie year. Some of it is circumstance in that the Mavs have a better roster this year. I am not worried ab Rick's ability to develop young guys. I would be more worried about who is buying the groceries than Rick honestly. And at least Green has shown some flashes that he might be a player in this league. I think Justin Anderson and guys like that just didn't have the talent honestly, I don't think its Rick's fault they suck. RE: ROSTER TALK: DAL with $25.7M - $37.3M in capspace this summer - StepBackJay - 03-30-2021 Obv as you mentioned Brunson also played a lot and started many games as a rookie. So its certainly not a situation where Rick refuses to play rookies that aren't lottery picks. Did you know that? Also, I thought it was pretty clear from Bey's minutes in that game that he isn't better than Powell (yet). I mean this as respectfully as possible, but someone who is THIS angry over a basketball team might want to rethink who they're labeling "crazy." I hope you can get over all of these complaints you have with the team you follow someday and enjoy the Mavericks again. It's fun to actually like the team, imo. The game is not slow for him like it is for Green and Hinton right now. 1. Josh Green 2. Nate Hinton 3. Tyler Bey 3. Tyrell Terry Hinton's body movement and pace suggests he is NBA ready and can play. The real question is, are we going to approach a point where we have to decide between Hinton and Terry? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EuB_Gs7QHHE RE: ROSTER TALK: DAL with $25.7M - $37.3M in capspace this summer - KillerLeft - 03-30-2021 (03-30-2021, 12:18 PM)Omega_Supreme Wrote: I am starting to feel differently about Josh Green and his upside. His game has definitely improved since his g-league stench. The real question is, are we going to approach a point where we have to decide between Hinton and Terry? Yeah, I think the pull between upgrading the top/middle of the roster next year and continuing on with all four of these rookies might be tricky. I'm super interested to see what they ultimately decide to do. I think it's too early to tell whether any of the four will be long term keepers, but I'm not anxious to close the book on any of them just yet. Terry is the guy who takes the most grief on this board, but idk...I just have this crazy gut feeling about him. I think he's going to be good. I loooooove smart players. We don't know if he's a smart player yet, but we definitely know he's a smart person. I'm betting on that, personally. What does it take to get that guy some of James Johnson's 17 mpg in the 29 games he played (used JJ cause he's your favorite whipping boy). Terry is a complete wildcard for the moment but I think the others are going to be hanging around a while. Mavs tend to shuffle those G league spots almost every year but I think clearly Bey and Hinton are the best prospects we have had occupying those spots in a long time. RE: ROSTER TALK: DAL with $25.7M - $37.3M in capspace this summer - ItsGoTime - 03-30-2021 Also, would you describe Trey Burke as "low-mistake"? He's gotten 15 mpg in 44 games. Just saying, I didn't say the "low-mistake, high-energy" line, but seems to me that on many nights, the Mavs could have used a guy that is just like that! The biggest reason given for less rookie play is because RC wants to win and he trusts his vets to make less mistakes than the rookies. That is a lot of minutes between Burke and Johnson, two not-so-low-mistake guys IMO. RE: ROSTER TALK: DAL with $25.7M - $37.3M in capspace this summer - KillerLeft - 03-30-2021 (03-30-2021, 12:52 PM)ItsGoTime Wrote: Honestly, RC himself said "low-mistake, high-energy". What does it take to get that guy some of James Johnson's 17 mpg in the 29 games he played (used JJ cause he's your favorite whipping boy). Hey, I was excited about Johnson when he got here! @"dirkfansince1998" makes fun of me about it all the time, lol. Really, I was just excited about Wright's money disappearing after this season, but I was a little optimistic that Johnson could give them something. On a team that's trying to be good, it just makes sense to me that the guys who've done it before will get ample chances to earn minutes. At this point, I think it's safe to say Johnson was NOT helpful on the court. They moved him. I have no problem with that, either. In THIS game, Green was a low-mistake guy (he has been high-energy in every game, so far, imo). In earlier games, not so much. I interpret that as evidence of growth. Some combination of Carlisle, the staff and Green, himself, are doing things. Things that aren't televised. It couldn't be more clear, imo. When they think the kid is ready to further his development without hurting the team, and more to the point, when they think the kid is ready to contribute more on the court than some of the guys playing ahead of him (I'd say DFS and Richardson have been the players in his way, not Johnson) then he'll get more chances. Now, none of the paragraph above is meant to communicate that Carlisle could never be wrong with these judgements. He could, and probably has been from time to time. What I find ludicrous is this notion that if we aren't allowed to watch "development" on television then it must not be happening. This is literally these people's professions. There are multiple people whose days begin and end thinking about Green and how he can get better. There is so much information about Green's progress that we simply don't have, but they do have it. If the simplistic view of "developing rookies" thrown out on this board (even moreso on Twitter) daily were correct, that would mean the coaching staff is actively working against the best interests of the team. Obviously, that's nut-bar factor 9. RE: ROSTER TALK: DAL with $25.7M - $37.3M in capspace this summer - StrandedOnBeauboisHill - 03-30-2021 Hey guys, this is my first post here so I first just want to say how glad I am to find out this place existed. I used to post every once and a while on the db.com boards under a different name, cdansby, but I kind of thought this all just died when Fisher moved sites without understanding that his entire audience were these boards. Mavs Twitter and Reddit drives me crazy with how surface level and knee jerk some of the takes are, so seeing all these usernames again is quite the sight for sore eyes. I got a million thoughts I'd like to get off my chest but I'll just stick with what's being discussed. I get confused as to fans' frustration of the rookie's minutes this year as we are clearly in a little more of a win now mode compared to recent years and we also seem to be, you know, winning now when the roster is full strength and squeezing Green and the rest of the bunch out of the rotation. I think we just caught a lot of bad luck this year with the G League not being what it normally is because I feel that all 4 kids would be getting most of their development there this year, so in that sense the player development has been disappointing but obviously not from any fault of the FO. I also think it's weird to claim this team doesn't develop rookies when two of our starters were developed in house. For the rookies themselves I think we have great upside in all 4 of them. Personally, I think Bey may end up carving himself out a role sooner than the rest out of need (I'm also biased because I live in the Boulder area and saw a lot of him in college and was ecstatic when we landed him in the trade) but think that all showed promise in the bubble. And although I was very high on the fit of Aaron Gordon as the 4 on this team, I'm glad Green wasn't moved because of the uncertainty around Hardaway's and Richardson's futures here at the moment. At the very least we have someone we can thrust into those minutes and hope that he can step up if needed next season. We also didn't really have the ammo to match Denver's offer anyway but that's a different point for a different thread. I also think us sending out our second rounder shows that we like all 4 of those guys because we're basically saying we don't have roster space for that second rounder anyway because they plan on all 4 being guaranteed next year. Anyways, these are random thoughts and not directly tied to other posts in this thread but just kind of excited that I'm here moving forward instead of listening to a bunch of reddit posters who have been Mavs fans for 2 and a half seasons screaming to fire Rick. RE: ROSTER TALK: DAL with $25.7M - $37.3M in capspace this summer - ItsGoTime - 03-30-2021 Heck, I'll go as far as to say, JRich isn't a low-mistake guy. I think there is something to be said about playing in games is better development than in practice, or the playing in games solidifies the development in practice. There are some that seem to defend in the way you are describing, for sure. The rest of us just have a different view than what it seems RC does on development. That view isn't just some guys on the internet thinking they know better. It's years of watching development with different coaches in the NBA. Yeah, so to me, last night was literally the first game in which Green saw the floor and actually helped. If he strings 3-4 of those together (when called upon) then I bet he starts to play more regularly. The funny thing, and the reason I'm becoming increasingly aware of how pointless these debates are is that if/when that happens, people will say "see, they should've been playing him all along" instead of "wow, that kid has come a long way. The coaches are doing a good job with him." The reality is that there probably are things the coaches and organization could be doing better, but none of those folks have the slightest clue what they are. How could we? The choices are to trust that the organization is trying to do what's best and working with a much deeper base of knowledge than we are, or to find a different source of entertainment. This third option of constantly complaining about everything, twisting the details of every situation into a club to use beating oneself and everyone else here into the mud is perplexing to me. I just don't see the allure of it.
