Naji Marshall Signs Extension W/DAL
#21
Changing his number from 13 to 3 (he wore 13 in college and 8 at NOP).

Conspiracy theory #1:  Seva wanted the number and the Russian government made Naji an offer he couldn't refuse

Conspiracy theory #2:  Jordan Poole called and told Naji the Gafford/Klay to NOP deal was coming and he wanted his number.

I was so ready to run Dumont out of town...instead he got a great Governor, a top GM, and one of the hottest Coaches in Basketball...to see these new guys and not have to keep yelling to dump Nico and Kidd is so wonderful now...if you do not rate this as a great off-season and draft so far your glass is completely empty in my opinion...

PS: I miss this place and need to spend more time here with the greatest Basketball fans in the world...
Josh Green is a top 5 Mavs player...

What would make this make sense is if Naji has been working with shot whisperer Dirk Nowitzki and his 3 is dramatically improved.

Naji Marshall’s three-year contract extension with Dallas will start at $18.2 million in 2027-28 and decline in the following two seasons to $17.3 million in 2028-29 and $16.7 million in 2029-30, league sources tell @TheSteinLine and @DLLS_Sports.

Typically Yossi is on point though.

The 5% raises are year to year on his new contract.  Now that we know its descending contract I think that means its immediately tradeable (just like Gafford was).

This moves the needle a little for me. I still don't love it, but it's a little more palatable.

Yeah, I just don't understand the thinking with this one. I like Marshall the player, but HATE his fit with Flagg. HATE.

We can only hope, but I wouldn't bank on much improvement going into his 7th year.

Maybe he is their answer for the backup PG / main ballhandler role in the second unit? He should fit well alongside Kyrie in the non Flagg minutes as well.

Kyrie | Naji | Sasser
Klay | Christie | Sergio
Coop | Risacher | Biberovic
PJ | Aldama | Martin
Gafford | Morez | Lively

+ Cisse

I never had an issue with him as a player just the contract situation and the fit issue with Flagg (& PJ). They have added a lot of shooting and will get Kyrie back so the whole offense should have more firepower. I think it can work but understand the concerns about his fit here.

But if you look at that bench squad you essentially can play him alongside three plus shooters (Klay/Max + Risacher + Aldama) and a rim runner. That’s quite a lot of firepower and some nicely fitting players. Somebody has to have the ball in his hands afterall and put pressure on opposing defenses. If the other options are a rookie and a third stringer from Detroit it does make a lot of sense as an insurance.

Besides that I think he is still very tradeable on that contract. Probably also a bit more valuable than as an upcoming UFA.

Oh its late. My brain got to 14M a year and expected declining so was happy with the deal. 17.4M a year is a lot rougher. Unlike our believes they must have received plenty of trade interest for Gafford/Washington to be comfy with Naji´s number. Other option obvious they have found a trad they like and now wait to execute, depending on the whole Kawhi situation.

Teams with more powerful players with #13 and not #3:  Miami, Sacramento and Minnesota.

All the endless fantasy GM trades and rampant speculation that Naji wasn't part of the plan:

Surprised by this extension.   Thought it was much more likely he was traded then extended.    I just thought with the moves this summer and the type of players they have targeted that Marshall would have been the odd man out.

Not extremely surprised he is a Masai type player though.   I just thought I saw some writing on the wall.

The Mavs are waiting for the perfect move before they moves they like.   When it works, you have a team ready to go when you find the right move.   when it doesn't you have a team that is misshaped.

It certainly feels like unless a lot of moves are made, that Cooper is going to play a lot of time in the backcourt.

Mavs appear to keep things quiet.  I wonder if teams around the league think the same?  Marshall has barely been mentioned by the new administration.    With him being a free agent next year, he would have been one of the guys I would have called about.    Stein says Mavs have turned down offers for him.    Then boom....he gets an extension.

Hmm
Not the direction I would have gone.
This is coming from someone who usually leans keeping current players

I think both Flagg and Naji are the Mavs' intended solutions to the question of how they will have secondary ballhandlers or creators of offense.
