TRADE: 6 team trade. DAL, WAS, DET, MIL, LAC, + MEM
#1
@ShamsCharania
The Detroit Pistons are trading Caris LeVert and two second-round picks to the Milwaukee Bucks for Taurean Prince and Gary Harris, sources tell ESPN. Pistons will create a trade exception from the deal and savings while Bucks acquire LeVert and pick up assets.

Dallas is sending Middleton to the Wizards via sign-and-trade as part of a larger six-team deal that includes, in total, the Mavericks, Wizards, Clippers, Pistons, Bucks and Grizzlies. It involves previously agreed upon deals such as John Collins, Gary Harris and Taurean Prince

The Mavericks will create a $5.6 million trade exception by sign and trading Khris Middleton to these terms.

The Wizards can absorb him into their $13.4 million trade exception which expires tomorrow.

Alternatively, the Mavericks can aggregate Khris Middleton and AJ Johnson for Santi Aldama in the six team trade.

This allows them to preserve their $20.8 million trade exception.

Well, they probably won’t use it all. We’re still only $~17m below the tax line, assuming Tarik is $3m. Not that they can’t go into the tax, just unlikely.

As part of the elaborate six-team trade, the Washington Wizards are sending D'Angelo Russell, a future second-round pick and a future second-round pick swap to the Memphis Grizzlies, sources tell ESPN.

Super clutch to give this big piece of business its own thread. I'm sure it will be fun to unpack.

This is the kind of asset management that the Mavs never seemed to have with prior front offices.

The Nico regime would have done the Middleton sign and trade but would have included two second round picks going to the Wizards.

The Donnie regime would have just signed Middleton to the Mavs (probably with the MLE).

It's a nice change compared to how things used to be done around here.

It's looking good.

I want the specifics of everything before I gush too much, but it's already indicative of strategic thinking, that's for sure.

I really don´t see how, but what do I know.

Doesn´t the outgoing salary of Middleton/Johnson have to match with Aldama´s 17M to not use any exceptions? I can´t even believe Middleton got such a huge number that this works with Aldama, but to take Sasser on top seems really difficult.

Yeah, if the move is really to execute this deal without touching the exception (a reported possibility, but not really a report yet), I don't think Sasser is a part of this one. But, there could be so many more details to come.

Resulting fallout from this trade:

?Mavericks hard-capped at the first apron due to using more than 100% salary-matching in a trade

?Pistons are hard-capped at the first apron due to acquiring a player via sign-and-trade

?Grizzlies are hard-capped at the first apron due to using more than 100% salary-matching in a trade

?Bucks are hard-capped at the first apron due to using more than 100% salary-matching in a trade

?Clippers and Wizards were already hard-capped at the first apron due to previous moves.

This should be no issue for any of the teams, as all should have enough room to work below the first apron this season.

I don't think it was an additional second.  One of those originally destined for Memphis in the Alama/Biber deal got redirected to Washington (so, Memphis gave it up in order to get additional seconds from the Wizards for taking DLo).
