This thought has crossed my mind a couple times. If things keep up like this, I will start to really think RC deserves a lot of credit for helping Luka succeed.

Maybe the team (especially Luka) just needs more time to figure out the new offense. Verly likely that RC was already getting the max out of them and playing to the strengths of Luka. Just like Kidd is getting more out of them on defense.

I'm not sure I agree on the fit from an offensive scheme standpoint.  I think Rick begrudgingly came to the realization...how did Jason Kidd put it?...Give the ball to Luka.  Rick walking away was a combination of his friend getting fired, Cuban's Mickey Mouse management style, the generational personality divide between he and his star and to some extent, year after year of trying to turn a chickenshit talent pool into chicken salad, and not being able to coach the way he saw fit (outdated or not).

Agree with everything above, but you left out what I think might have been the biggest reason: the organization (Cuban) insisting that KP is salvageable. We might not all agree that this is #1, but it should at least be listed amongst the other good points you've made.

Rick was already all in on spacing, 4-out or 5-out spread pick and roll before Luka joined the Mavs. He also loved to run horns sets or spain pick and roll. Basically all the things that Luka excels at. I think the main adjustment that RC made was to give up the leash and let him make mistakes. Luka isn´t the conservative decision maker that RC used to prefer. He is more creative but also high risk. RC had to learn that high risk comes with benefits because more often than not Luka made the right decisions. When the overall result is the league leading offense a high turnover rate can be forgiven.

I might be oblivious (and probably am), but I never really thought there was a divide between Rick and KP.  I always assumed the divide was with Luka since he couldn't run an offense they way he wanted with Luka being so ball dominate.  I get KP's frustration with Luka and to a lesser extent, vice versa.  I can see KP being frustrated with the coaching staff ("2 point shots aren't valuable in today's NBA").  I just never read into Rick being frustrated with KP.

I'm not denying Luka's talent but I've often said here that he isn't an easy player to be a teammate with, especially for a co-star.  I think you can extend that to coaching him as well.  And when you have a personality like Rick, who isn't easy himself, that's just a bad combo.  If I had to guess, I don't think Rick really ever felt empowered to coach him how he saw fit.

Very true.  I guess I was talking more about usage rate and those high risk passes and "bad" shots that he is fond of.

6) Two consecutive shortened offseasons with international play added to his massive on court work load might have his energy down a bit.

7) Last season he also started slow, especially his shooting.

The perfect team mates for Luka would be an SG who can dribble, shoot and defend and a big who can roll and defend.
Could have gotten the big las off season.

But Mavs wanted mediocrity from their bigs (Maxi excluded).

Luka should have been high fiving Richaun by now.

Clear the decks and make a push for Miles Bridges?

Someday we have to compile all of Luka's buzzer beaters/go-ahead shots.

I was watching that, thinking "there's no way a shot like that should be rewarded. A fall-away from out behind the 3-point line". It'll only encourage him to do it again. As a Mavs fan, I love the win, but...come on. That S is impossible. But if you don't try it, you don't ever do it.

RE: HALLELUKA: All Things Doncic | signed 5 yr/$207M extension w/ player option - burekemde - 11-07-2021

I noticed something about Luka's mechanics, and outcome of shots. If he makes a very slow shot movement mechanics, he is far more efficient making shots. When he is rushing, it significantly decreases. I guess this might be true for many or even most players. But i really believe this effect on Luka is bigger than for the usual player. He seemed to rush less through his shot motions in this game. Most of the time he is anyway unblockable, even if he slows it down, so it might be beneficial to his game to slow it down.

P.S. Obviously, this is not true for the last second game winner shot Smile But rest of the game in many cases.
