RE: NO TRADE: Kyle Lowry staying in TOR - Tyler - 03-25-2021

I sorta love the way Toronto handled this.

They made it very clear that Lowry was available but that they weren't going to just give him away. A few major contenders just assumed they'd fold and trade him for scraps. So the Raptors strung it out, waited for the best offers, and ultimately said no -- we're not gifting you our best player for your trash.

Yes, Lowry is a free agent this summer. But Toronto knows that the teams that want Lowry the most won't have the cap space to sign him and will have to come back for a sign & trade if they want to get something done.

And in the meantime, they get to thumb their nose at the Lakers, Heat, and 76ers. Good for them.

Just sucks that they're playing in Tampa, because if nothing else the rest of the season could have been the Lowry/Raptor Fans send off party.   It's not quite Dallas/Dirk worship there, but it's pretty close.

Ultimately it's hard to do a rental deal for someone who has a 33 million dollar salary.    The only teams who are interested in a rental are contenders, and contenders have a hard time making salaries match without  throwing in high end talent and turning it  into a lateral move.

He also is reportedly seeking a $25M contract, which will be close to just as hard to match. We’ll see if he settles for less when the offers come in, but SnTs don’t really get the same value back either. However, if he goes to the highest bidder, that probably means he goes to a noncontender team. That could also mean they can sign him outright, which if there is a SnT, leverage and pretty much return value would be even less.
