RE: Around the NBA 2019-2020 | Billy Donovan let go by OKC - dirkfansince1998 - 09-11-2020

While I am at it. Smart deserved the DPOY award. He was just as good in the regular season. Today he was without a doubt the best player on the floor. One of the best (if not the best) defensive performances I have ever seen from a non big.

Unfortunately he doesn't have the name recognition of other stars.

Tough to crucify them for that. He's clearly the type of player who's extremely valuable on a good team and would look overpaid and ineffective on a bad one. They knew way before we did that they weren't going anywhere with Smith Jr, and I doubt a dude like that would've signed here anyway.

Would love to have him NOW, don't get me wrong.

Did you see Smarts clutch block?
It will take years 'til I won't feel the urgency to scream, when somebody touches a player after a clean block.

Nobody else did either, cause Ainge got lucky or correctly projected the 3pt shooting improvement.

I thought J. Brown would have been the perfect target for us this summer. Unfortunately Ainge "overpaid" at the time of the extension, but with his recent performances and the level of the FA class, Brown would be a max player now (even under the circumstances).

Seriously Smart/Brown next to Luka. Perfection. Undecided

Heat & Celtics, ya the Heat are going to the Finals. Also Kemba's playoff performance has shown you why the Mavs wanted him. It would be funny if the Heat play the Lakers in the finals.

Smart was born and raised in Flower Mound (Dallas-Forth Worth). In 2018 his mother was battling cancer. She received treatment in a hospital in Dallas.
On top of it Smart was one of the last RFA to sign a contract. Initially Ainge wasn´t willing to pay him more than the MLE.
If the Mavs ever had the chance to sign a RFA it was Smart in 2018. Sadly they wasted the entire capspace on day one of free agency.

It´s luck if you do it once or twice. Ainge has been incredible. Nailed the draft. Made big free agency signings. Robbed the Nets, Mavs and Hornets in trades.

Looking back at the discussions we had at the time I remember that many of us wanted to sign him. Same for the media. Smart to Dallas was a natural fit.

I know it wasn´t luck. Wink I´m just saying that the Mavs weren´t the only team to pass on Smart and that he made a very positive development afterwards.

Generally it seems the Mavs NEVER ever use the vast Dallas connections of so many players (out of college, too). It seems they are actually completed opposed to it.

Julius Randle was basically begging us to make him an offer with his tattoo. I´m positive, he´d have accepted 45/3 from us instead of the Knicks 56/3 (40M guaranteed) he took eventually. His Knicks contract wouldn´t even interfer with our 2021 FA plan. And you can show me a million advanced stats that suggest Powell is better than Randle. He´s not.

Myles Turner was another Dallas native basically growing up idolizing Dirk. You can tell from his interviews that we´d still be one of his favourite trade destinations, when the Pacers eventually settle on Sabonis. A package of Kleber/Curry would probably get the job done.

You can´t complain that you virtually have to force players here in free agency, with an overpay, when you ignore the players that would give you some hometown discount.

That can't be good for the Bucks.

RE: Around the NBA 2019-2020 | Giannis unfollowing Bucks? - MrGoat - 09-12-2020

That type of social media garbage historically is a pretty reliable indicator of the intention to switch teams. Milwaukee should start working the trade phones right now. And if Giannis has an idea of which team he wants to go to that would be the place to start

I heard a loud knock on my door. I think Cuban's woody reached all the way to Colorado after he saw the Giannis news.

He must be trolling the media. Probably announce the super-max next week after ESPN have talked themselves into a frenzy.

I don´t give a f*** about social media personally, but I assume that if I had all these accounts and un-followed all my friends and co-workers at the same time it would cause some real life drama.

Only other explanation is that he has been informed by the NBA that he´s won the MVP trophy and immediately headed to the Australian outback with Dirk, Luka and Delon Wright. In case you are wondering why Delon came along. Lots of dangerous animals in Australia like snakes, spiders, crocs and sharks. Wright can finally earn his reputation as a defender.  Big Grin

If it´s legit there is only one assholish franchise that has the free time during the on-going play-off, the mindset, the assets and no capspace to do this now: the Warriors. They´ll try to shove the #2 pick, 2021 1st from Minnesota, couple future 1sts, Wiggins and Paschall down the Bucks throat.

That's interesting, but doesn't change my point. Great role players don't help bad teams. You have to have Luka/KP or Tatum/Kemba/Brown (whatever) first. Draymond Green is amazing, too, but think about how sad GS just looked without access to the players Green is there to complement. In Dallas, at that time, the team was being built around 937 year old Dirk and dumber than a box of rocks Dennis Smith JR, no? Isn't that just another way of saying "we're not a playoff team?"

I doubt it would've been viewed as a fit by either side.

There were a few of us lobbying for Smart on the old site.

Rumor was Giannis wanted either Toronto or Miami (Giannis is clearly no Dirk, but damn, choosing Miami would basically make him a KD). The Warriors probably can throw the best package though they might be hesitant to do so if they don't have reassurance that he will re sign with them.

Unfortunately this probably takes us out of the running because of how many draft picks we used to get Porzingis. By rule, we can only offer our 2025 and 2027 first round picks and I would imagine they would want picks that are nearer in the future. About the only thing we could offer that they might take would be Porzingis himself

We might want to shift our focus towards courting/tampering with AD and hoping the Lakers fall short

Would that have been a problem though? If the Mavs hadn´t been such trash in free agency or the draft before he arrived, Luka could have had some good players on the roster already, instead of doing a(n admirable) job from scratch.

2018 FAs was such a short-sighted decision. They signed DAJ before FA even started. They could have made a play for all these players we fantasy trade about every day:

Zach LaVine
Aaron Gordon
Marcus Smart
Derrick Favors (did the Mavs really think the LA cornflake was better for win now purposes, yikes)
Jusuf Nurkic ($12M dollars, his agent should be working some NBA outpost in Greenland)

Put this in your head. I´m not shitting you. THAT summer. For the DAJ money, we could have signed Brook Lopez, Julius Randle, Montrezl Harrell AND DeMarcus Cousins. Confused  UN-f***ing real. That´s a better win now team in 2018, 2019, 2020....

Milwaukee would be absolutely stupid to trade Giannis. They are very close to win it all and who knows when can they return in this position again.

Wiggins contract is a negative value, even some GSW fans thinks it will take Klay to do such trade. Nuggets trade is interesting tbh.
If Giannis is interested in staying there, him and Jokic can be scary.
Another one is obvious, KP for Giannis  Sleepy
