Blows my mind how much people still complain about him. And it's not just the memesters

Let's see him develop a young player not named Luka (I would put Powell too, but then Carlisle ignores how utterly hapless he is on defense and plays him so much that Cuban and Donnie think they have to give him a contract he would never have received from any of the 29 other teams in the league, period), be able to mesh with players who don't seem to have any trouble contributing well with other teams, learn how to go for the easy shot when trying to maintain leads, and coach defense adequately without Casey standing next to him. I'm one of those who once wanted to see him be our Sloan and retire here - as recently as a year ago. Not any more.

Maxi, Dodo, and Seth were all developed by Rick

Yeah, Jym, you're right. I was knee-jerking with regard to the "developing young players" issue in response to SH and some others saying that a rookie wasn't going to get time if we drafted one anyway.

I've changed my tune over the past day or so - 1) yes, there are players in the draft who can start on a playoff team right away, 2) Donnie might be able to find one of those players, and 3) Rick should be able to be trusted to play them (if they aren't gangstas, dawgs, or knuckleheads, he probably will). Good! Makes our offseason easier. We can get a starter in the draft, and another with the MLE or through a modest trade. A rookie really is the best answer for the starting lineup, because of the low cost and keeping powder dry for those so inclined.

My latest concerns with Rick are WCS and Brunson. Everyone knows that I'm a big WCS fan as a player here, and I found RC's obnoxious minutes leash on him when he got here perplexing and infuriating. When he played, he played well. Interior defense and rim-protection - two things Powell never provided, and was quizzically never expected to provide, and he still got minutes and a Brinks truck. I'm telling you, it's the tats. Brunson was underutilized given his on-court impact this year, I thought, and didn't seem to play well with Luka, which was a big part of why RC seemed to be limiting his minutes. Brunson is a valuable young piece who would hopefully be part of our core for years to come, but if RC can't coach him to share the court with Luka, he sadly becomes trade bait.

And I probably should have worded mine a bit differently myself. I certainly still have my complaints with him here and there. Especially with the way that Wright was handled all year. I don't think he was ever given the opportunity he deserved to consistently play 30+ minutes a night. No real excuse after Brunson went out.
But overall I love the command he has over teams. Even when we were horrible for years he still had the players engaged and fighting consistently. I also think he's one of the best at making a plan going into a playoff series and having the players buy into that concept.

And I think in the ideal world we turn that 18th pick+ whatever into a consistent Day 1 starter next year.
I don't have confidence in Donnie that he'll find a rookie who can slide into that role.

Well, sometimes you just have to watch the game to figure out which team you dislike more.  Rockets are officially my least favorite team.

Time for Harden to ask for a trade and for Morey to pack his bags.

Is Donovan a good coach though? 1 above average year after almost 6 years of constantly under performing doesn't really redeem him in my own opinion.

The dude had Kevin Durant in his prime along with Russell Westbrook, and constantly his teams severely under performed expectations.

I feel like this year was more an addition of Chris Paul than Donovan being a good coach.
He had Kevin Durant for one year, they were up 3-1 in the conference finals and then Durant shit the bed and left them with nothing in return in the off-season.  Why do you have an axe to grind with Billy Donovan?

Lakers suck too.

I pretty much hate all of the seven teams still in except Denver and the Raps. I hate Boston less than the other four, and that's only because of Ainge screwing us with the Rondo deal (which is, of course, a "gift" that will keep on giving until we unload that damned Powell contract).

Is the hatred born from past fan bias, or do you not like their styles of play? No judgment for either, just curious. The only guy I hate is James Harden.

I'm actually appreciating Lebron more and more the older he gets, and I know it's sacrilegious to type this, but I think Miami is really fun to watch. Those dudes play hard. Have y'all noticed how much Crowder contributes? I'd love to have him back.

RE: Around the NBA 2019-2020 | Billy Donovan let go by OKC - SwisherPrice - 09-10-2020

I never understood the Luka and Harden comparisons outside of their love for the stepback three. Luka is more like a LeBron - a big point guard who can run an offense and score. They both have natural basketball IQ. Harden is strictly a scorer with passing ability.

RE: Around the NBA 2019-2020 | Billy Donovan let go by OKC - cow - 09-10-2020

Harden's passing is underrated. I don't really hate the comparison. They are more similar athletically than most other comps. Sure Luka has more of that Lebron gene of wanting to get other players involved, but both Harden and Luka rely more on craftiness to get to the bucket rather than off-the-charts athleticism.

I will pull for the LeBrons over the Clippers, mainly because they have the lesser evil twin.

Sports hate is not always rational.

As much as I'd hate for the Heat to win another chip, beating Lebron in doing so would be delightful.

I´d just like to point out that you´d all be pretty mad, if DFS put up 3 points on 1-6 shooting with six rebounds in a big play-off game, and that´s what they did combined today.

We need to find another plus defender on the cheap among all the younger RFA. I´d still love to get Bonga. Maybe the Wizards would trade him for #31. I don´t think Brooks rates him that highly. Is he still their coach?

Eh. I don't really give a crap about Donovan. Just from an outsiders prospective he's always been a bottom tier coach. Wish Thunder was here to provide some insight from an avid OKC fan's prospective. Didn't think my post was that aggressive for Donovan's outing.

I didn't realize he only had KD for a year. Thought it was at least 2, which certainly does change my perspective of him a little. Either way his teams have always been meh. Never really a threat to do anything in the playoffs, and certainly never overperformed because he coached players up. Something Brad Stevens or even our own Carlisle does on a regular basis. Now was it because his star player Westbrook isn't good enough to lead a team in a series? Or is it because Donovan didn't put his players in the best position to succeed?

All I know is that in game 7 of this year OKC vs HOU, on the final play of the game to give OKC a shot to advance, Donovan drew a basic play that he always drew for end of game situations. One that Westbrook immediately recognized and blew up in its entirety. He knew exactly who to cover and what to do because it was the play Donovan always gave him when he was in OKC. A good coach wouldn't have called a play like that in that situation...

(but actually I was rooting for Miami just once to knock out MIL. Felt quite dirty wanting the Heat to win, even if it was to indirectly help the Mavs in their quest for Giannis).

Well of course, if he had Westbrook for all five years. Can't do much with that overrated player
